Golden Corral is closing some individual restaurants in 2026, not all of its locations. Closures in Brownsville, Texas; Alton, Illinois; and Canton, Ohio, reflect decisions by local franchise operators. At the same time, Golden Corral said six new restaurants were in development, indicating that the buffet chain is continuing to expand rather than winding down nationwide.
Is Golden Corral going out of business?
No. There is no announcement of a chainwide shutdown. Golden Corral said in an April 30, 2026, release that 99% of its restaurants are locally owned and operated by independent franchisees. That structure means a restaurant can close because of its own lease, labor, renovation or financial problems while the broader brand continues operating and recruiting new operators.

TheStreet counted about 340 Golden Corral restaurants in the United States and Puerto Rico on April 24, 2026. Its location review listed 41 restaurants as permanently closed and five as temporarily closed at that point. Those figures are a snapshot of listings, not evidence that the company is exiting the market.

Brownsville, Texas: a temporary renovation closure became permanent
Gaspar Hernandez, the Brownsville franchisee, said Golden Corral requires a routine restaurant refresh about every seven years. Completing the required work would have coincided with a lease reset that raised monthly rent from $17,500 to $31,000. Hernandez told MySA that, given the renovation bill, higher costs and business trends, he did not see a viable path forward. The restaurant at 4555 North Expy 77/83 therefore remained closed after its summer renovation shutdown and permanently ceased operations on September 14.

Alton, Illinois: staffing made the business unsustainable
The Alton restaurant at 350 Homer M. Adams Parkway posted a permanent-closure notice citing an inability to keep the store staffed enough to properly serve guests. A regional report said Alton was R.F.R. Inc.’s second exit in the St. Louis-area market, while three other Golden Corral restaurants in that metro area remained open.
Canton, Ohio: the owner did not state a cause
The Canton restaurant closed on February 1. Unlike Brownsville and Alton, the owner did not publicly identify a financial, staffing or lease reason. That makes it impossible to attribute the closure to a specific chainwide problem. Workers who wanted to stay with the brand were expected to have an opportunity to move to the Akron location.

Why one Golden Corral can close while others open
Franchise ownership is the key distinction. Local operators negotiate leases, pay employees, fund remodels and decide whether a particular store can earn an acceptable return. A rent increase or a required capital project may be manageable for one owner but impossible for another. Likewise, a labor shortage can force one restaurant to close even when nearby units continue serving customers.

Chief executive Lance Trenary said the company remained committed to expanding access to Golden Corral while working with franchisees. The company also described refreshed franchise incentives, including potential reimbursements tied to the first three years of sales, a $5,000 grand-opening marketing credit and up to $45,000 in manager-training reimbursement for qualified franchisees. Those terms are company-stated offers and may change, so prospective operators should confirm current eligibility and conditions directly with Golden Corral.
How to tell whether a local restaurant is temporarily or permanently closed

- Call the restaurant or the franchise operator and ask whether the closure has a planned reopening date.
- Check the restaurant’s most recent local notice or social-media update for language such as “temporarily closed,” “renovation” or “closed permanently.”
- Confirm nearby alternatives before traveling, because national location lists can lag behind a franchisee’s decision.
A temporary closure normally includes a stated renovation or reopening plan. “Permanently closed,” removal from current local listings and a franchisee’s closure announcement are stronger indications that the location will not return.

What the numbers do—and do not—show
The roughly 340-location count and the 41 permanent and five temporary closures reported by TheStreet describe the listings it reviewed on April 24, 2026. They do not establish that every closure happened in 2026, nor do they predict how many restaurants will reopen or be replaced. Golden Corral’s statement that six restaurants were in development is evidence of ongoing expansion, not a promise that every project will open on schedule.

Golden Corral also cited a 252% year-over-year increase in searches for “all you can eat buffet near me.” That is a company-reported marketing figure, not an independent industry study, but it helps explain why the chain is presenting new development alongside local closures.
Bottom line for customers
If your nearby Golden Corral closed, the most likely explanation is a local franchise decision involving that restaurant’s rent, staffing, renovation needs or finances. The 2026 closures in Brownsville, Alton and Canton are permanent or completed closures at those addresses, but they do not mean Golden Corral is closing all locations. Other restaurants remain open, and six more were reported in development.
