Both a recovery and further declines remain possible for gold in 2026. The latest month-end price in the available market commentary was US$4,176 per troy ounce on September 30, 2026, after an 8.5% drop during September. That fall does not settle what happens next: investors added to gold ETFs during the month even as the dollar and Treasury yields rose and futures positioning contracted.

There is no established, certain year-end price. The direction depends on how yields, the dollar, economic growth, geopolitical risks and investment demand develop—and those forces can pull against one another. The figures below are in US dollars unless stated otherwise; gold’s return in another currency may differ.

What the latest gold price says—and what it does not

The World Gold Council’s October 7, 2026 commentary reported a September 30 month-end price of US$4,176/oz. In US dollars, gold was down 8.5% for September and 4.4% year to date through September 30. These are dated month-end figures, not a live October quote or a forecast for the rest of the year.

September’s decline followed a sharp change in market conditions. The Council attributed major downward pressure to the US 10-year Treasury yield rising 53 basis points to 5.3% and the US Dollar Index (DXY) gaining 2% during the month. Those are the Council’s explanations of that month’s move, not proof that either factor determines gold’s price on its own.

At the same time, global gold ETFs received US$10 billion, or 67 tonnes, of inflows in September, according to the Council. Futures positioning contracted. The different signals show why a single indicator—or a single month’s decline—cannot establish the next direction.

What could make gold recover?

Lower real yields or easier policy expectations

Gold does not pay interest. When real yields—the return on bonds after inflation—fall, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold can ease, all else equal. A turn toward easier monetary-policy expectations could therefore support demand. The reverse is also true: rising real yields can make interest-bearing assets more attractive relative to gold.

A weaker US dollar and renewed investment demand

A softer dollar can support gold’s US-dollar price, while renewed buying by long-term investors may add demand. The World Gold Council’s July 30, 2026 Q2 outlook expected over-the-counter activity and Asian investment to contribute more to second-half demand. Those were expectations made in July, not confirmed full-year results.

Heightened risk or weaker economic conditions

Geopolitical escalation, a severe economic downturn, weaker credit conditions or poorer equity-market prospects may increase interest in gold as a defensive asset. That is a possible channel, not a guarantee: risk events do not produce the same price response in every market environment.

Central-bank purchases

The Council’s July outlook expected central banks to remain significant buyers. Official-sector demand can support the market, but it is one factor among several; it does not establish a price floor or make a recovery inevitable.

What could push gold lower?

Higher yields and a stronger dollar

Rising real yields can increase the cost of holding gold relative to assets that pay interest. A stronger dollar can also weigh on gold’s US-dollar price. Both were among the major contributors the World Gold Council identified in its analysis of September’s decline.

Stronger growth and calmer markets

If economic growth proves more resilient, yields rise, the dollar firms and geopolitical risks recede, investors may have less reason to seek defensive assets. The Council’s December 2025 annual outlook included stronger growth, higher rates, a firmer dollar and reduced risk among conditions that could lead to a correction.

Pressure on jewellery demand or other sources of support

High prices can restrain jewellery demand. The Council’s Q2 outlook anticipated that effect and described a gradual supply response; its annual outlook also identified central-bank buying and recycling as uncertain variables. A slowdown in official purchases or more recycled supply could remove support, although neither outcome alone determines the price.

How to read the 2026 scenarios and price targets

Gold’s path is better understood through conditional scenarios than a single-point forecast. The World Gold Council’s December 2025 outlook described outcomes ranging from a broadly rangebound market under consensus conditions to gains if growth slowed and rates declined, or stronger performance amid a severe downturn or heightened risk. It also described a possible correction if growth strengthened, yields rose and the dollar appreciated.

The Council’s July 1, 2026 mid-year report refined its near-term scenarios using information available through June 26. Its then-current consensus environment suggested a level around US$4,100/oz; US$4,500/oz and US$5,000/oz were conditional upside scenario levels, not guaranteed targets or current consensus forecasts. The September month-end price of US$4,176/oz came later, so those July figures should not be presented as if they were a current forecast.

Scenario Conditions that could support it What to watch
Broadly rangebound Consensus economic conditions persist without a decisive change in risk appetite, rates or investment demand. Whether yields, the dollar and investment flows remain relatively balanced.
Moderate recovery Growth slows and rates decline, easing the opportunity cost of holding gold. Real yields, monetary-policy expectations and sustained investment demand.
Stronger gains A severe downturn or heightened geopolitical or economic risk increases defensive demand. Whether risk concerns translate into broader buying across investment channels.
Further correction Growth strengthens, yields rise, the dollar appreciates or defensive demand fades. Real yields and the dollar, alongside ETF, futures and physical-market signals.

To judge which scenario is becoming more plausible, compare signals on the same dates and price basis. Watch real and nominal yields; the dollar in the currency relevant to you; economic growth and perceived risk; ETF, futures, over-the-counter and physical bar-and-coin demand; and central-bank buying alongside mine supply and recycling. If these measures point in different directions, the outlook is mixed rather than confirmed.

Why reserve-value headlines need context

Comparisons between the dollar value of gold reserves and foreign official holdings of US Treasuries can be misleading. In a September 3, 2026 FEDS Note, Federal Reserve researcher Colin Weiss explained that a higher gold price raises the reported dollar value of existing reserves; much of the world’s gold is held as legacy holdings acquired earlier, so the valuation increase does not necessarily mean official purchases accelerated by the same amount.

The note said that by June 2026, foreign official Treasury holdings again exceeded world gold reserves, excluding US holdings, in dollar terms. This does not negate central-bank gold buying; it means valuation comparisons alone cannot show how much new gold governments purchased.

What the evidence supports—and what remains uncertain

The September price decline is established, as are the simultaneous ETF inflows and the Council’s account of rising yields and a stronger dollar. The evidence does not establish that gold will recover before year-end, fall further, or reach a particular target. The Council’s October 7 commentary also reported that UK-listed gold ETFs attracted 54 tonnes in Q3, compared with approximately 18 tonnes predicted by its model—a 36-tonne excess. It said the model explained little and the reason remained uncertain, so this is a notable flow divergence, not a dependable price signal.

Any outlook also depends on the measurement used. A US-dollar price per troy ounce is not interchangeable with a quote in another currency, a different unit, an intraday high or a different benchmark. Gold and gold-linked investments can lose value; scenario levels are conditional, not guarantees.
