Gold can be held as physical coins or bars, through a vaulted-gold product, or as market-traded exposure. Those choices differ in custody, fees, resale, and tax considerations. Physical gold is not guaranteed to sell immediately at the spot price, and its value can fall as well as rise. This guide explains the main tradeoffs and, in a clearly labeled section, the U.S. federal tax treatment described in IRS Publication 550 (2025). It is educational information, not individualized investment or tax advice.

What does investing in gold involve?

“Gold” can mean several different things to an investor. With physical bullion, you own coins or bars and must decide how to secure them and how to sell them later. A vaulted-gold product involves a provider’s custody and withdrawal or delivery terms. Market-traded exposure, including physically backed exchange-traded products, has its own custody, counterparty, fee, and trading mechanics. Those arrangements are not interchangeable: buying an instrument that tracks gold does not necessarily mean you hold an identifiable coin or bar that you can take delivery of.

The World Gold Council identifies bullion coins, small bars, vaulted-gold products, and numismatic coins as retail formats. Numismatic coins may carry additional value tied to scarcity, design, age, or popularity, rather than only the metal. That can make their price and resale market different from those of ordinary bullion. Before choosing a format, decide whether you want direct possession, provider-managed custody, or market-traded exposure—and understand what you own and what it takes to exit.

What should I compare before buying?

Do not judge a purchase only by the quoted spot price. The spot price is a reference for immediate delivery of physical metal; a retail transaction can have additional costs and a different buyback price. Compare the total amount you would pay and the net amount you might receive if you sold, including dealer premiums, transaction fees, storage and insurance charges, delivery costs, and resale terms where applicable.

Coins, bars, and numismatic coins

Format What to consider
Sovereign-mint bullion coins Compare premium per ounce, recognition, verification, and the resale market. Examples include American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and South African Krugerrands.
Small bars Compare the premium for the size offered, how the bar will be verified, and the dealer’s resale terms.
Numismatic coins Price may reflect scarcity, design, age, or popularity as well as the metal; consider whether there is a resale market for those characteristics.

Premiums can differ by product format and size, so a lower advertised premium is not by itself proof that a purchase is better value. A product’s recognition and verification process can also matter when you sell. Ask the prospective buyer how it will value and authenticate the specific coin or bar you are considering, and get the buyback price before committing.

Dealer and transaction checks

  1. Check the dealer. The CFTC and FINRA advise checking a dealer’s history and complaints rather than relying only on sales materials.
  2. Compare the complete quote. Ask for the price, premium, transaction fees, delivery charges, storage or insurance charges if offered, and any other terms that affect what you pay.
  3. Ask for the buyback price. Compare the amount the dealer would pay for the exact product, not merely a general statement that it buys gold.
  4. Read return and delivery terms. Understand the deadline and conditions for returns, how delivery works, and what happens if you later request withdrawal or resale.

The CFTC/FINRA advisory puts the key price distinction plainly: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” That gap is the spread. Fees and the spread mean the gold price may have to rise before a resale recovers the original outlay. A spot quote is not a promise that a retail coin or bar can be purchased or sold at precisely that amount.

How is gold taxed when you sell it?

U.S. federal rules in IRS Publication 550 (2025)

This section concerns U.S. federal tax treatment only. IRS Publication 550 (2025) includes gain or loss from the sale or trade of metals such as gold bullion held for more than one year within its discussion of collectibles gain or loss. For qualifying net long-term collectibles gain, the maximum capital-gain rate is 28%. That is a ceiling, not a flat tax rate applied automatically to every gold sale: the publication explains that if the regular tax computation produces a lower tax, the lower computation applies.

The applicable result depends on facts such as holding period, tax basis, account type, and the taxpayer’s overall tax position. The cited rule does not establish a universal tax treatment for every kind of gold exposure or for every account. It also does not describe other countries’ tax rules, sales taxes, or value-added taxes. Check the IRS publication and rules for the tax year that applies to the sale, and consult a qualified tax professional for advice about your circumstances.

Where should I store physical gold?

Storage is a choice about who has custody, how you can access the metal, what protection and insurance apply, what evidence exists that the metal is held, and what recurring costs you incur. The retail guidance discusses self-storage, a rented bank or storage-provider box, and a regularly audited professional vault. No option should be treated as risk-free or automatically insured; compare the actual contract and custody arrangements.

Storage choice Questions to resolve
Self-storage Who has access, how is the metal protected against theft or disaster, what insurance applies, and what evidence will document your holdings?
Rented box What are the access arrangements, recurring charges, insurance terms, and limits on delivery or withdrawal?
Professional vault How often is the vault audited, what custody records are provided, what insurance is included and on what terms, and what do delivery or withdrawal cost?

Professional vaulting may offer easier resale, insurance that is often included, and reduced exposure to theft or disaster, but these are potential advantages—not guarantees. Verify what “included insurance” covers, who is responsible for a loss, whether your metal is identified in custody records, how audits work, and whether fees continue while you hold the product. For any storage arrangement, compare recurring costs against the convenience and custody evidence it provides.

If gold is held through a self-directed IRA, the CFTC/FINRA advisory says to check that the metal is held by the IRA trustee or custodian. Do not assume that a provider’s description of a storage arrangement settles the account’s custody requirements; confirm the arrangement with the trustee or custodian and review applicable rules.

How easy is it to sell gold?

Gold trades through several channels, including over-the-counter markets, futures, and physically backed exchange-traded products. That broad market activity does not mean a retail coin or bar can be sold instantly at spot. A physical owner still needs a buyer willing to purchase that product, and the dealer’s bid, verification, product popularity, fees, and shipping can affect the amount and timing of the net proceeds.

Before you buy, get the actual buyback terms for the product and compare them across dealers. Ask how the buyer verifies the item, whether shipping or other charges are deducted, and whether the quoted bid is firm or subject to inspection. For a vaulted product or a market-traded instrument, read its own sale, withdrawal, custody, and fee terms; these are distinct from arranging a sale of a coin in your possession.

Historical market-volume estimates should not be mistaken for a guarantee about an individual retail sale. Market-wide liquidity and a particular coin’s resale conditions are different questions. The practical measure for a prospective buyer is the available exit route and net buyback amount for the specific holding.

Can gold prices go down?

Yes. Gold is not a low-volatility guarantee. In its 2026 edition, the World Gold Council describes historical years with returns close to a 30% gain in 2010 and close to a 30% loss in 2013. These are approximate historical examples reported by the Council, not forecasts or a promise that gold will offset losses in a particular portfolio or market.

The Council’s explanation of gold’s diversification role is that its behavior can differ from stocks and bonds—not that its price is necessarily stable. Gold also pays no regular income, so an investor who benefits must depend on price appreciation. A buyer should be prepared for the possibility that the market price falls and should distinguish that price risk from dealer spreads, storage charges, and other costs that can also reduce the result.

Prices can be influenced by factors including inflation expectations, currency movements, and geopolitical events, according to the CFTC/FINRA advisory. Futures add a separate risk: leverage can make a relatively small price move produce losses larger than an investor expects. That warning about leveraged futures should not be confused with the risk profile of an unleveraged physical bullion purchase, though physical ownership still carries market-price and transaction-cost risks.

How do I choose an approach?

There is no universally best format in the available guidance. The useful comparison is between what you own, what it costs to hold, and how you can exit. Use these questions to narrow the choice:

  • If you want direct possession: compare coins and bars on premium per ounce, recognition, verification, storage, insurance, delivery, and the dealer’s buyback terms.
  • If you prefer managed custody: examine the vault or product’s custody records, audit frequency, insurance terms, recurring fees, and delivery or withdrawal conditions.
  • If you want market-traded exposure: determine whether the instrument gives you ownership of identifiable metal or market exposure, and review its custody, counterparty, trading, and fee mechanics.
  • If you are considering futures: assess leverage and potential loss separately from a physical bullion purchase; a modest price movement can have an outsized effect.
  • If you are evaluating a coin for collectibility: separate the metal value from any price attributed to scarcity, design, age, or popularity, and establish how a future buyer would value those features.

Make the decision using both sides of the transaction: the all-in purchase cost and a realistic, product-specific estimate of what you could net on sale. Then check whether the custody arrangement and possible price swings fit your needs and circumstances.
