For most long-term investors who want listed exposure to bullion, a physically backed gold trust is usually simpler than buying gold futures directly. That is not a universal winner. “Gold ETF” can mean a trust holding bars, a fund holding futures, or another derivative structure. Direct futures offer precise contract exposure but add margin calls, daily settlement, expiry, rollover and possible delivery. The right choice depends on the exposure you want, how actively you can manage the position, the account you use and the product’s actual costs.
Start by identifying what “gold ETF” means
The label alone does not tell you what an exchange-traded product owns. Read the prospectus or trust agreement and identify the source of return before comparing it with futures.
Physically backed bullion trust
A physical gold trust holds gold bars with a custodian and issues shares through a securities exchange. The shares are designed to reflect the value of the trust’s bullion, less sponsor and operating expenses. You buy and sell shares in a brokerage account rather than arranging storage or insurance for personal bars.

You generally have a securities interest in the trust, not a bar registered in your name, and the trust’s structure, custody arrangements, creation and redemption process and expenses all matter. The Goldman Sachs trust filing cited for this comparison says the assets consist principally of custodied gold bullion and that the trust “does not and will not hold or trade in commodity futures contracts regulated under the Commodity Exchange Act.”

Futures-based exchange-traded fund
A futures-based fund obtains gold exposure through futures contracts and may keep cash or other collateral. It can hold contracts in several delivery months and periodically replace expiring positions. Its return can therefore differ from the spot price of gold because of contract pricing, collateral income, trading costs, fund expenses and the way it rolls positions.
Do not assume every product marketed as a gold ETF owns bars. The fund’s prospectus should state whether it holds bullion, futures, swaps or a combination, and should explain its benchmark, collateral policy and roll schedule.
Direct gold futures
A futures contract is a standardized agreement for a specified quantity and delivery month. The cited U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describes the COMEX gold contract as 100 troy ounces and physically delivered at expiration. You open the position with margin instead of paying the full notional value, then settle gains and losses as the contract is marked to market each day.
That makes a futures position fundamentally different from buying an ETF share. You must choose a contract month, maintain required margin, respond to variation-margin demands and close, roll or settle the contract before delivery procedures apply.
How the three structures compare
| Feature | Physical bullion trust | Futures-based fund | Direct gold futures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underlying exposure | Gold bars held by a custodian | Gold futures, usually with cash or other collateral | A standardized futures contract for a defined delivery month |
| How you trade | Shares in a securities account | Fund shares in a securities account | Futures account approved for the relevant contract |
| Typical leverage | Normally none beyond any borrowing in your securities account | Built into the fund’s derivatives exposure; product-specific | Notional exposure is backed by margin, so leverage can be substantial |
| Expiration | No contract expiration for the share | Contracts inside the fund expire and are rolled according to its policy | Yes; you must close, roll or accept delivery procedures |
| Primary ongoing costs | Sponsor and trust expenses, plus trading spread and commission | Fund expenses, trading spread and commission, collateral and roll effects | Commission, exchange and clearing charges, bid-ask spread, financing and roll costs |
| Operational burden | Low after purchase, although custody and tax records still matter | Moderate; read the roll and collateral policy | High; monitor margin, daily settlement, expiry and delivery notices |
Costs and tracking over a long holding period
Expenses of a physical trust
A bullion trust pays its sponsor, custodian and other operating expenses. Those expenses reduce net assets or the quantity of gold represented by each share. The iShares Gold Trust product page cited in the available disclosures listed a 0.25% sponsor fee when accessed on October 13, 2026. That is one product’s stated fee at that date, not a market-wide rate; check the current prospectus because fees can change.

Because expenses are paid from trust assets, a share’s bullion backing can decline gradually even if the market price of gold is unchanged. Bid-ask spreads, brokerage commissions, premiums or discounts to net asset value and trading at times of low liquidity can create additional differences from the spot price.
Costs inside a futures-based fund
A futures fund charges its own expense ratio and incurs the costs of trading and replacing contracts. Collateral may earn income, but that income and the fund’s cash policy are product-specific. The fund’s return reflects the performance of its futures positions, not simply the day-to-day change in a spot-gold reference price.

Selling the near contract and buying the more expensive later contract can create a negative roll effect if prices otherwise remain unchanged. In backwardation, later contracts are cheaper and rolling can add value. Neither condition is permanent, and the effect depends on the fund’s exact schedule and methodology. Read the prospectus rather than assuming that every futures fund rolls on the same dates or holds the same maturities.
Costs of direct futures
Direct futures do not charge a trust-style annual sponsor fee, but they are not free to hold. You pay brokerage, exchange and clearing charges and cross the bid-ask spread when entering, exiting or rolling. The position is settled daily, so cash can move in or out of the account even when you have not closed the trade. If you maintain exposure beyond one contract month, you incur the economics of rolling yourself.
Why tracking is never guaranteed
A physical trust can deviate from a spot-gold reference because of expenses, trading friction, premiums or discounts and market conditions. A futures fund can also diverge because of its expense ratio, collateral return, contract basis and roll results. A direct futures position tracks its own contract month, which can trade above or below spot. The available disclosures do not establish that futures always underperform bullion or that a bullion trust always tracks perfectly.

Margin, leverage and daily settlement
What margin means
When you buy a physical trust share, you normally pay the share price in full unless you separately borrow in a securities account. A futures trade instead requires an initial margin deposit set by the exchange and broker. Margin is a performance bond, not a down payment that limits your maximum loss to the amount deposited.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The 100-troy-ounce COMEX contract can represent a large notional value relative to the margin posted. A small percentage move in gold can therefore produce a much larger percentage gain or loss on your deposited funds. Exchange and broker margin requirements can change, especially during volatile markets.
Variation margin and forced liquidation
Futures are marked to market each trading day. If the contract moves against you, the broker can require variation margin, meaning additional cash must be deposited promptly. If you cannot meet the requirement, the broker may reduce or liquidate the position under its agreement. A favorable move can credit cash to the account, but those gains can reverse just as quickly.
Before trading, confirm the broker’s maintenance-margin calculation, intraday policies, liquidation rights, minimum account balance and procedures for a margin call. Do not size a position solely by the amount of initial margin shown on the order ticket.
Expiry, rolling and the possibility of delivery
Contract months are real deadlines
Every futures contract has a delivery month and exchange rules governing the last trading day, first notice day and delivery process. The cited SEC filing describes physical delivery for the COMEX gold contract. An investor who does not intend to make or take delivery must close or roll the position before the broker’s deadline, which can be earlier than the exchange’s final date.

Ask the broker for written deadlines and read the contract specifications. A position left open too long can trigger a notice, a forced liquidation or delivery obligations that you did not expect. The exact timetable varies by contract and broker.
How a manual roll works
- Identify the active contract and its deadlines. Record the last trading day, first notice day and your broker’s required close-out date.
- Compare the next eligible month. Check its price, liquidity, spread and open interest rather than rolling automatically into the calendar month with the most convenient name.
- Close the expiring position. Account for the realized gain or loss and the commission and spread.
- Open the replacement contract. Deposit enough cash for the new margin requirement and a reasonable adverse move.
- Reconcile the notional exposure. A price change or a different contract month can make the new position materially larger or smaller than the old one.
A futures-based fund performs an equivalent process inside the fund, but you still bear the resulting roll return through the fund’s net asset value.
Which approach fits which long-term investor?
A physical trust may fit when
- You want exchange-traded exposure linked to bullion without managing a delivery month.
- You can accept sponsor expenses and a custody structure instead of owning personal bars.
- You prefer to size the position with the cash value of shares and avoid futures margin calls.
- Your securities account does not offer, or you do not want, futures trading approval.
A futures-based fund may fit when
- You specifically want futures-market exposure in a fund wrapper.
- You understand that roll yield, collateral and the fund’s methodology can change results relative to spot gold.
- You want to trade through a securities account but are willing to read derivatives disclosures.
Direct futures may fit when
- You need contract-level exposure, a particular delivery month or the ability to hedge a matching physical or commercial position.
- You have futures approval, substantial liquid cash and experience with daily settlement.
- You can monitor prices, margin, notices and expiry on every trading day.
Direct futures are generally a poor match for someone who wants to buy once and ignore the position. A contract can require more cash after purchase and can reach a delivery deadline even when your long-term thesis has not changed.
A decision framework for comparing a specific product
Use the following sequence instead of comparing a spot-gold chart with an unlabeled “gold ETF” return.
- Define the exposure. Decide whether you want bars in a trust, a fund’s futures strategy or a particular futures contract. If the product uses derivatives, identify the contracts and collateral.
- Measure the full cost. Add sponsor or fund expenses, commissions, spreads, custody or financing charges and the expected cost of rolling. A single stated expense ratio is not the whole cost of ownership.
- Check tracking mechanics. For a trust, review how bullion is valued and how expenses reduce backing per share. For a futures fund, read the benchmark, eligible maturities, roll dates and contango or backwardation disclosures. For direct futures, compare the chosen month with the spot reference.
- Stress the cash requirement. A share purchase generally requires the purchase price; a futures position requires initial margin plus a reserve for variation margin and changing requirements. Model an adverse move rather than using only the minimum margin.
- Review liquidity. Compare average volume, bid-ask spread, creation and redemption terms for funds, and open interest and trading hours for futures. Liquidity can differ sharply between contract months and during market stress.
- Map the operations. Note how the trust handles custody, how the fund rolls and how the futures broker handles notices, liquidation and delivery deadlines.
- Confirm account and tax treatment. Availability, reporting and tax results depend on the account, jurisdiction, product structure and investor circumstances. Obtain current professional advice rather than applying a generic rule.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every gold ETF owns bars
Read the holdings and strategy sections. A fund that owns futures can have a different return path and different risks from a bullion trust, even if both trade under similar names.

Comparing a fund with spot gold only
Use the fund’s stated benchmark and account for expenses, collateral and roll results. Spot gold is a reference, not a promise of what any security will return.
Treating margin as the maximum possible loss
Margin is collateral. Losses can exceed the initial deposit, and additional cash may be required before you can close the position. Keep a reserve and understand the broker’s liquidation policy.
Ignoring the delivery calendar
Write the close-out and rollover dates in your trading calendar. Confirm whether the broker automatically rolls, liquidates or allows delivery; never assume the answer.
Using one fee figure as a permanent fact
Fees, margin requirements, contract terms and product availability change. The 0.25% sponsor fee cited above was the figure displayed for the iShares Gold Trust page accessed October 13, 2026; verify the current prospectus before investing.
Expecting a universal long-term winner
The available disclosures do not provide an independently published statistic that ranks long-term ETF and futures returns across products. Outcomes depend on the exact instrument, entry price, holding period, roll environment, expenses, leverage and account.
Tax and account considerations
Tax treatment is not uniform across bullion trusts, futures-based funds, direct futures and account types. It can vary by jurisdiction, legal structure, holding period and whether the position is in a taxable or sheltered account. Product disclosures and current tax advice are necessary; do not infer your result from another investor’s treatment.
Account access also differs. A bullion trust or futures fund may be available in an ordinary securities account, while direct futures generally require a separate application, risk disclosures and approval. Some accounts restrict derivatives or impose their own margin and concentration limits.
Practical checklist before placing an order
- Have you confirmed whether the product owns bullion, futures or another derivative?
- What are the current sponsor or fund expenses, and how are they paid?
- If futures are involved, what contracts are eligible and how are they rolled?
- What is the contract size, delivery method and broker deadline for closing or rolling?
- How much cash is required today, and how much additional cash could an adverse move require?
- What are the typical spread, commission and financing or clearing charges?
- How liquid is the specific share or contract when you expect to trade?
- Does your account permit the product, and what tax reporting applies to you?
- What event would make you reduce, close or roll the position?
Bottom line
For a long-term investor seeking straightforward, listed bullion exposure, a physically backed trust often has the clearest operations: buy shares, pay the stated expenses and avoid contract expiry. A futures-based fund can be appropriate when its strategy and roll mechanics fit your objective. Direct futures are a specialized tool for investors who need contract-level exposure and can manage leverage, daily variation margin, expiry and possible delivery. Compare the exact product and your ability to operate it; the words “gold ETF” or “gold futures” are not enough to determine which is better.
