Gold was reported at $4,206.86 an ounce in two intraday snapshots on Monday, October 12, 2026, as traders balanced a possible easing of fuel-supply pressure against renewed Middle East risks. The Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire was an announced agreement, not confirmed evidence of a truce in effect or added supply reaching markets.
Where gold stood in Monday’s trading
Investing.com reported XAU/USD at $4,206.86 an ounce, up 0.3%, at 20:30 ET (00:30 GMT) on October 12, 2026. It also reported a 1.3% gain over the previous week. This is an intraday snapshot, not a closing price. Investing.com’s October 12 report also put silver at $60.99 an ounce, up 0.6%, and Brent crude down 1.2% at its stated snapshot.
The Business Times, drawing on Bloomberg, reported the same gold price and 0.3% move at 8:30 a.m. Singapore time that day, and Brent down 1.2%. The time zones differ, so the two reports should be read as separately timestamped market snapshots rather than as a daily close. The Business Times report
Why the announced energy truce could ease pressure on gold
President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy facilities, after a US diesel-supply deal with Moscow. Reuters described the announcement; it does not establish that the halt was implemented or that extra Russian fuel had reached the market. Reuters’ coverage

If traders expect fewer attacks on energy infrastructure and more fuel available, that prospect can reduce concern about supply constraints and the inflation they may cause. Lower inflation pressure could, in turn, ease expectations for interest-rate increases. That matters for gold because it does not pay interest: when yields on interest-bearing assets are more attractive, gold can face a relative headwind.
Why Middle East risks pull in the other direction
The same-day reports described renewed violence in the region. They said Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport came under attack on Sunday, following a Saturday strike that reports said caused deaths and hundreds of injuries. The coverage attributed Houthi attacks to retaliation for what the group called Saudi aggression; those attributions are the parties’ claims as reported, not independently verified findings here.

Escalation can increase uncertainty and strengthen demand for gold as a perceived safe-haven asset. But if conflict threatens energy flows, higher fuel costs may add to inflation and the prospect of tighter monetary policy. Higher yields can weigh on non-yielding gold even as geopolitical risk supports investment demand. The net effect depends on which force traders judge more consequential.

Investing.com reported that China added 740,000 ounces to its gold reserves in September, extending its reported buying streak to 23 consecutive months. The report attributed the reserve information to official data, but the underlying release was not available for independent confirmation. It also described gold-backed ETF inflows as reaching a four-year high, citing Bloomberg data and attributing the demand interpretation to ANZ analysts. The underlying flow series and exact measurement period were not specified in the report, so these figures are best treated as reported context rather than independently verified measures.

What the move does—and does not—signal
The reported price placed gold just above $4,200 at the cited intraday times. A one-day rise does not establish a trend or predict the next move. Traders were weighing possible fuel-supply relief from an announced energy agreement against the risk that Middle East escalation could disrupt energy flows and raise inflation concerns. Investment demand and central-bank buying were additional supports, while the yield effect of inflation and rate expectations could work against gold.
Prices and geopolitical developments can change quickly; the figures above are the publishers’ October 12, 2026 snapshots, not live market data.
