Some astronaut helmets have a movable gold-coated sun visor to reduce harsh sunlight and glare during spacewalks. It works like specialized sunglasses, while separate helmet layers provide pressure containment and other forms of protection. Astronauts can raise or lower the visor as lighting changes, and not every helmet configuration is the same.
What the gold-coated visor does
Outside a spacecraft, astronauts can encounter intense direct sunlight. The sun visor reduces visible light and glare and helps limit exposure to ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) parts of sunlight while preserving a usable view. NASA EVA hardware manager Les Padilla put it simply: “That gold visor is like basically very fancy sunglasses.” NASA’s podcast transcript also explains that the visor can cover the face fully or partly, or move out of the way.
The visor does not block every kind of radiation in space. Its sun-filtering role is distinct from the broader protective functions of the spacesuit and helmet. NASA’s spacesuit overview describes the suit’s wider purpose, while its helmet guidance focuses on the visor assembly.

The gold coating is on an outer, movable sun visor—not on the pressure-containing helmet bubble. In NASA’s description of a spacewalk helmet, the clear plastic pressure bubble is covered by a protective visor; the sun visor and eyeshades are separate components outside those layers. Each part has a different job.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Pressure bubble: helps contain the pressure needed around the astronaut’s head.
- Protective visor: provides protection separate from the sun-filtering layer.
- Sun visor: reduces intense visible light and helps filter UV and IR exposure.
- Eyeshades: opaque side shades that help block sunlight arriving from different directions, including at low angles.
The sun visor can be repositioned or removed when conditions do not call for it. NASA also describes a quick-swap protective visor for Artemis suit helmets, intended to help protect against abrasive planetary dirt; that is a separate function from filtering sunlight. NASA’s Spacewalk Spacesuit Basics outlines these helmet components.
What the gold coating filters—and what it does not
Gold is used as a thin optical coating, not as solid armor. In the Apollo lunar extravehicular visor assembly, NASA’s technical report describes a thin, vacuum-deposited gold film on the inner surface of an adjustable outer sun visor made from high-temperature polysulfone. A separate, fixed-down UV-stabilized polycarbonate protective visor sat beneath it. NASA attributes visible-light filtering and rejection of a significant amount of UV and IR to the outer visor; it describes the protective visor, sun visor, and pressure helmet together as contributing to a thermal barrier.

Those functions belong to the assembled layers, not to the gold film alone. The coating should not be described as providing all pressure, impact, thermal, or radiation protection. NASA’s lunar visor technical report describes the historical Apollo arrangement and its materials.
How much light does a current EMU sun visor transmit?
NASA’s 2025 NASA-STD-3001 technical brief reports visible-light transmission of 16% +/- 4% at 555 nm for the external sun visor on the current Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU). This is a specification for that visor at that wavelength—not a universal figure for all gold-coated astronaut visors or a general percentage of sunlight blocked.

The brief notes that visor attenuation can affect visual tasks during an EVA, so task timing may need adjustment when solar lighting is adverse. NASA OCHMO-TB-050 provides the transmission figure and lighting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why visor designs vary
Apollo lunar equipment and current EMU guidance both describe layered visor systems, but their details should not be treated as interchangeable. The Apollo report identifies a polysulfone outer sun visor with a gold film and a separate polycarbonate protective visor. NASA’s current EMU brief gives a transmission value for its external sun visor. That figure applies to the current EMU visor under the stated measurement condition, not to Apollo hardware or every astronaut helmet.

NASA’s materials establish examples, not a complete inventory of helmet designs across all programs. The gold visor is therefore a feature of some configurations, rather than a universal attribute of astronaut helmets. NASA’s Space Suit Evolution overview also describes the outer sun visor as reflecting solar heat and light.
