Steam is the better primary launcher if you rely on a large store, community features, or Steam Workshop for supported games. GOG GALAXY is the better organizing layer when your games are split between several services or when DRM-free ownership and offline launching matter most. Many players will sensibly use both: Galaxy can present a combined library, but it does not replace the original client for platform-specific installation, updates, saves, or online features.
There is no universal winner. Choose according to where you buy games, which social and mod tools you use, whether you need a particular title to work without Galaxy or an internet connection, and what each game actually supports.
What GOG GALAXY and Steam actually are
GOG GALAXY is a store client and library hub
GOG describes GALAXY 2.0 as a desktop application for accessing the GOG store and your GOG library. Its distinguishing feature is aggregation: after you connect supported accounts, games from several platforms can appear in one library view. You can organize that combined collection and see selected friends, achievements, and statistics in one application.

A game remains owned by the service that sold it, and the service that owns it still controls platform-specific functions. GOG’s FAQ says connected games can be shown even when they are not installed, but you still need the original client for actions such as installing or auto-updating those games, using that platform’s cloud saves, and other service-specific features.

GOG lists GALAXY as available for Windows and Mac. Feature availability can change with the client version and with the individual game.
Steam is a storefront, client and gaming community
Steam’s official overview presents more than a download program. It combines a store, game library, chat, game hubs, broadcasts, reviews, recommendations, Early Access listings, achievements, controller support, mobile access and other community tools. Steam Workshop adds a built-in way to create, discover and download player-made mods or cosmetics for supported games.
Workshop is not a property of every Steam title. Valve’s official page describes support for “nearly 1,000 supported games”; that is Valve’s own wording on the page accessed October 13, 2026, not an independently audited catalog count and not a claim that all Steam games support mods through Workshop.

Can GOG GALAXY combine your Steam and GOG games?
Yes, it can display games from connected services in one GALAXY library. That solves the “which launcher owns this game?” problem at the browsing level, especially if your collection spans GOG, Steam and other supported platforms.
It does not turn those services into one account or one installation system. A Steam game remains a Steam game, with Steam handling the actions that require Steam. A GOG game remains a GOG purchase, with GOG’s own distribution and account rules. GALAXY is therefore best understood as a dashboard over multiple libraries, not a replacement layer that removes every other client.

What aggregation is useful for
- Seeing a fragmented collection in one searchable or customizable view.
- Remembering which games you own without opening several storefronts.
- Viewing the cross-platform friends, achievements and statistics that GALAXY can import or display.
- Using one organizational system while still launching a title through the service that supports it.
What aggregation does not do
- It does not transfer a license from one storefront to another.
- It does not guarantee that a connected game can be installed or updated from GALAXY.
- It does not provide the original service’s cloud-save, multiplayer, mod or account features automatically.
- It does not eliminate the need to keep the original clients available for platform-specific actions.
How to use GALAXY as a practical library hub
- Install GALAXY on a supported computer. GOG lists the application for Windows and Mac.
- Sign in to your GOG account. Your GOG purchases become available through the client according to your account and the game’s distribution options.
- Open GALAXY’s connected-platform or integrations controls. Choose a service, follow its account-authorisation process, and grant only the access you are comfortable giving.
- Let the library synchronise. Games from connected platforms may appear even when they are not installed locally.
- Customize the library view. Use the available filters, categories or views to separate installed games, uninstalled games and titles from different services.
- Keep the original clients installed. Open the owning platform when you need its installer, updater, cloud-save controls or another platform-specific function.
- Verify important titles individually. Before deleting a client or depending on a save, achievement system or multiplayer mode, check that the game and service combination supports the feature you need.
Interface names can change between GALAXY releases, so use the current connected-platform controls in your installed version rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.
Where Steam is the stronger choice
You actively use Steam’s community features
Steam puts discussion, chat, game hubs, broadcasts, reviews and recommendations alongside the library. If those tools are part of how you discover games, solve problems, find groups or stay in contact with friends, using Steam as your primary client avoids splitting that activity across applications.

Your game depends on Workshop
For a title with Steam Workshop support, Steam is usually the natural place to manage player-created content because discovery and downloads are integrated with the game’s Steam listing. Confirm support for the exact title: the existence of Workshop on Steam does not mean every game has a mod catalog or that every mod is compatible with every version.
You buy most games through Steam
If the majority of your licenses, friends and play history are already on Steam, its native library avoids an extra aggregation layer. You still may choose GALAXY for a cross-platform overview, but Steam remains the service that controls your Steam purchases and related features.
You want one established ecosystem for store and play tools
Steam’s documented feature set covers purchasing, library management, social functions, recommendations, reviews, achievements, controller support and mobile access. It is a broad ecosystem rather than a minimal launcher, which suits players who want those functions in one service.

Where GOG GALAXY is the stronger choice
Your collection is spread across several platforms
GALAXY’s main advantage is organizational. Instead of checking several clients to remember what you own, you can use one combined view and then open the owning service only when a platform-specific action is required.

GOG’s developer documentation states: “GOG’s ‘DRM-Free’ philosophy means that games released on GOG can’t have any DRM/copy protection and should work in all possible scenarios, regardless of the result of GOG GALAXY authentication, GOG GALAXY client presence or Internet connection availability.”
That statement describes GOG’s policy for games released as DRM-free on GOG; it is not a guarantee about a different storefront’s release, every multiplayer mode, or every online service attached to a game. GOG also qualifies the policy directly: “Of course, online-only features such as multiplayer, retrieving friends or leaderboards cannot be available when the user is offline…”
You need a client-optional launch path
For a qualifying GOG release, GALAXY is optional for starting the game. You can value that flexibility when travelling, troubleshooting a client, preserving installers, or simply reducing dependence on a running launcher. Whether a particular title has additional requirements still needs to be checked at the game level.
You want a single view without giving up separate services
GALAXY can provide the convenience of one library while you retain Steam or another client for the games and features that require it. This is a complementary use, not an all-or-nothing replacement.

Offline play, DRM and online services
“DRM-free” and “works offline” overlap, but they are not identical promises. DRM-free concerns copy protection and the ability to run the game without GALAXY authentication or an internet connection under GOG’s stated policy. Online services are separate dependencies.

The safest offline routine is to install and launch the game once while online, confirm that it starts as expected, and keep a separate backup of important saves. Do not assume that an online-only game, multiplayer mode or cloud-dependent workflow becomes available merely because the underlying release is DRM-free.
Cloud saves, achievements and multiplayer: check the game, not just the launcher
Launcher comparisons often imply feature parity that does not exist. GOG’s documentation distinguishes between features implemented for a particular game and features that are merely possible in the client. Automatic cloud saves are implemented where possible, not promised for every title. Steam’s community and Workshop features likewise apply only where a game supports them.
Before you depend on cloud saves
- Look at the game’s store and support information for explicit cloud-save support.
- Confirm which client owns the save when the same game exists on more than one platform.
- Do not assume a save made by one edition will synchronise with another edition.
- Make a manual backup before moving installations, changing clients or altering mods.
Before you depend on achievements
- Check whether the game exposes achievements through the client you plan to use.
- Understand that launching a game outside a client can change which client-side services are available.
- For offline sessions, expect network-dependent tracking or synchronisation to wait until connectivity returns.
Before you depend on multiplayer
- Identify the game’s required account, server and client.
- Keep that client installed even if GALAXY lists the game.
- Test the exact edition and mode you intend to play; single-player and multiplayer can have different requirements.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“GALAXY imported my game, so I can uninstall Steam.”
Importing a listing is not importing the installer or the platform’s services. If the game is owned through Steam, Steam may still be required to install, update, authenticate, provide cloud saves or enable another Steam-specific function. Keep the owning client until you have verified every action you need.
“DRM-free means every feature works offline.”
Offline play can work for the DRM-free game while multiplayer, friends, leaderboards and other online-only functions remain unavailable. Treat the game’s network requirements separately from its copy-protection policy.

“Every Steam game has Workshop.”
Workshop is title-dependent. Valve’s “nearly 1,000 supported games” description refers to supported games, not the entire Steam catalog. Check the game’s Steam page and its mod documentation.
“A combined library means combined cloud saves.”
A library view does not merge save systems. Cloud-save support, storage location and synchronization rules belong to the relevant game and platform.
“One launcher is objectively faster.”
The official materials considered here do not provide a controlled performance comparison. Startup speed, download time and resource use can vary with the computer, network, installed integrations and the game itself, so this comparison does not assign a universal performance winner.

A low-risk way to choose
- List where your important games are owned. Separate GOG purchases from Steam and other platform licenses.
- Mark the features you actually use. Include Workshop, multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, chat, reviews and offline launching.
- Check those features title by title. Do not infer support from the launcher’s general feature list.
- Choose the primary client for the majority of your must-have features. For many players that is Steam; for a DRM-free, cross-platform collection it may be GALAXY as the organizing layer.
- Keep secondary clients where ownership or functionality requires them. A combined view is convenient, but it does not remove those dependencies.
- Back up saves before changing anything. This is especially important when switching editions, removing integrations or modifying a game.
Final verdict
Choose Steam when its store, social ecosystem and supported-game Workshop features are central to how you play. Choose GOG GALAXY when your priority is a cross-platform library view or the client-independent, DRM-free behavior of qualifying GOG releases. Using GALAXY alongside Steam is often the most practical arrangement: one app organizes the collection, while each original platform continues to handle the functions only it can provide.
