You do not need GOG Galaxy to play most GOG games. Use Galaxy when you want automatic updates, cloud-save synchronization, achievements, multiplayer invitations, cross-play and one library for your PC games. Use GOG’s standalone offline installers when you want DRM-free control, dependable offline play, an archival copy or a computer that should not depend on a launcher. For many owners, the best answer is a hybrid: keep the offline installer safely stored and use Galaxy whenever its synchronization or social features are useful.
The short answer
GOG Galaxy is optional for GOG games. GOG Support describes it as an optional application and continues to present automatic updates, cloud saves, cross-play and rollbacks as Galaxy features. GOG also provides a separate download path called DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. Those installers let you install a purchased game without the Galaxy client.
The choice is therefore about convenience versus independence rather than whether one method is legitimate. Galaxy is a launcher and service layer. The direct installer is a self-contained distribution method. A game can be installed by either route, but the features available after installation depend on the particular title and, for online functions, on the relevant game service.

No general benchmark, adoption percentage, installer-size comparison or frame-rate test establishes that one method is faster. Choose based on the features and independence you need, not on an assumed performance difference.

What GOG Galaxy adds
Managed installation and updates
Galaxy gives you a library view in which you select a game, choose its installation command and let the client obtain the files. It can detect updates and apply patches without requiring you to identify every installer part manually. That is useful for large games, frequently patched games and households with several machines.
Galaxy also supports rollbacks where a title and its current distribution provide that capability. A rollback can be valuable when a new patch introduces a regression, but it is not a universal promise for every game or every historical version.
Cloud saves
When a game has Galaxy cloud-save support, the client can synchronize save data between computers. This is convenient when you move from a desktop to a laptop or reinstall Windows. Support is game-specific: the presence of Galaxy in your library does not mean that every title uploads every save file.
Cloud synchronization is also not a substitute for a personal backup. Before changing machines, make a separate copy of important saves when the game allows it, and avoid launching the same title on two machines while one has unsynchronized progress. If Galaxy reports a conflict, stop and determine which local or cloud copy contains the progress you want before choosing a replacement.
Achievements, friends and invitations
Galaxy can provide achievements, a friends list, multiplayer invitations and social activity for games that implement those integrations. Its product description also emphasizes viewing friends’ achievements and play activity across platforms. These are service features layered on top of the installed game; they are not required to start a DRM-free single-player executable.
A single library
If you own games from several PC storefronts, Galaxy can act as a single library and launch point, subject to the integrations and permissions those other services expose. That convenience is strongest for people who value one activity view and one update workflow. It also creates a dependency on the client for those convenience features, which is why keeping an offline copy remains sensible for games you intend to preserve.

What installing directly means
Standalone files from your GOG account
In your GOG account, the game’s download area includes the option DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. A modern game may be split into several setup files, with separate downloads for language packs, patches, downloadable content or bonus material. The exact set depends on the title and what you own.

What DRM-free does and does not promise
GOG Developer Docs define the company’s DRM-free philosophy as games that cannot have DRM or copy protection. The same documentation says a release should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, the presence of the Galaxy client or internet availability. That describes the core game, not every optional service.
Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards and similar online functions can still require an internet connection and the game’s own servers or service integrations. A DRM-free installer therefore does not turn an online-only feature into an offline feature, and it does not guarantee that a discontinued server will remain usable.
Install a game with Galaxy
Use this route when you want Galaxy to track the installation, apply updates and provide supported online features.

- Install and sign in to GOG Galaxy using the account that owns the game.
- Open the library, select the game and choose Install.
- Review the destination folder and available disk space, then start the installation.
- Let Galaxy finish downloading every component. Do not close the client while it is applying a patch unless you are deliberately pausing the job.
- Launch the game from Galaxy once so the client can complete any supported setup, then check the game’s settings or activity panels for cloud saves, achievements and multiplayer features.
Labels and the exact layout can change as Galaxy evolves. If a feature is not shown for a particular game, treat that absence as a title-support limitation rather than as a setting you must force on.

Install a game from the offline backup
This is the better route for an offline computer, an archival copy or a machine on which you do not want a launcher.
- Sign in to your GOG account in a browser and open your owned games library.
- Select the game and choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.
- Download every required installer part. Also download any owned DLC, language files, patches and bonus content you intend to preserve.
- Keep all parts in one clearly named folder. Do not rename files unless the game’s instructions explicitly allow it.
- Run the primary setup file and follow the installer prompts for language, destination and optional components.
- After installation, start the game from its executable or shortcut. Galaxy is not required for the core launch.
Some older releases include separate redistributables or game-specific prerequisites. Record those files with the installer rather than assuming a future operating-system installation will supply them automatically.
A practical hybrid workflow
You can use both methods without maintaining two active installations. The simplest pattern is to preserve the direct installer and use Galaxy for day-to-day play.
- Download the complete offline installer set, including owned DLC and any available patches or bonus files.
- Store a working copy on durable local storage and a second copy in a different location. Record the installer version, language, DLC ownership and required redistributables in a text file beside the archive.
- Install through Galaxy when you want automatic patching, cloud saves, achievements or invitations.
- Use the archived installer to recover the game if Galaxy is unavailable, if you need a fully offline installation or if you want to preserve a known-good version.
- Keep save backups separate from the installer archive. A setup file preserves the program; it does not automatically preserve your latest progress.
Do not assume that moving a Galaxy-managed folder to an offline installation will carry over every client setting or cloud save. Treat the installer and the save data as separate assets.
Updates, patches and rollbacks
When Galaxy is the easier choice
Galaxy can identify available updates and apply them in the sequence required by the client. This reduces the chance of missing a cumulative patch or downloading a file for the wrong language or edition. It is especially convenient when a game receives frequent fixes.
When direct installation gives you more control
Offline installers let you retain a specific version and decide when to update. That can matter for mod compatibility, a stable single-player setup or a computer that is intentionally disconnected. You must, however, track which patch level you installed and obtain compatible updates yourself from your account’s offline-download area.

Choosing a rollback
Galaxy rollbacks are available only where the title and its distribution support them. If a rollback is offered, note the version you are selecting and back up saves before changing the installation. A save created by a newer build may not work with an older build, particularly after a major content change.
Cloud saves, local saves and moving to another PC
For a Galaxy-supported title, allow synchronization to complete before closing the client on the old computer. On the new computer, install the same game, sign in to the same account and wait for the cloud copy to become available before launching into a new game. If both machines have changed the same save, Galaxy may present a conflict; compare dates and file contents where possible instead of selecting at random.
For a direct installation, locate the game’s save folder using that title’s documentation or community-maintained instructions, copy the files to secure storage and restore them after installing on the new machine. Save locations differ by game, so there is no universal folder or one-click import. A cloud-enabled Galaxy installation can simplify synchronization, but it should not be your only copy of irreplaceable progress.
Online features remain separate from the installer
Installing directly does not remove the game’s need for online infrastructure. Multiplayer matchmaking, friends lists, leaderboards, invitations and other network services may require internet access even though the single-player executable is DRM-free. They may also depend on servers operated by the game’s developer or publisher.
Before choosing an offline-only setup for a multiplayer game, check which functions the title documents as online. You can preserve and launch the game without Galaxy, yet still be unable to use a server-dependent mode if that service is unavailable.

Long-term ownership and preservation
What you can preserve locally
A locally stored offline installer can be reused without starting a Galaxy session. Preserve the complete set, not just the first executable: multi-part installers, language files, DLC, patches and bonus content may all be necessary to recreate the edition you purchased.

GOG’s public statement, quoted by GamesRadar on July 14, 2026, says: "Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc, and it’s yours forever." The same statement is summarized as: "You don’t need a storefront’s permission to play what you bought." Those assurances describe the value of keeping the installer, while practical recovery still depends on preserving your account records, required prerequisites and usable hardware or operating-system support.
Build an archive that you can understand later
- Use a folder name containing the game title, edition and installer date.
- Keep every numbered installer part together and retain the original filenames.
- Record the game version, language, owned DLC, patches and redistributables.
- Store at least two copies on different physical devices; a single drive is not an archive.
- Include purchase or account information needed to establish ownership if you later need account recovery.
- Optionally keep a copy on recordable optical media, as GOG’s preservation statement suggests.
Testing a reinstall is optional. If you do test one, use a separate location and document the operating-system version and any prerequisites that were required. A successful install on one computer is not a guarantee for every future system.
Common failure modes and fixes
Galaxy will not download or update the game
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the title.
- Check that the destination drive has enough free space for the installed game and temporary patch files.
- Pause and resume the download, then restart Galaxy if the transfer is stuck.
- If the problem persists, use the account’s offline installer as an independent recovery path and retain the error details for support.
The game launches but cloud saves are missing
- Verify that the title lists cloud-save support; it is not universal.
- Leave Galaxy open long enough for synchronization to complete on the original computer.
- Check for a cloud/local conflict before overwriting either copy.
- If you installed directly, copy the local save folder yourself; a direct installation does not automatically connect to Galaxy cloud storage.
An offline installer is incomplete
- Return to the game’s offline-download area and compare the files you downloaded with the complete list shown there.
- Download every numbered part and keep them in one folder.
- Check that DLC and language files match the edition you purchased.
- Do not delete the archive’s patch or prerequisite files after the first installation if you want a reproducible reinstall.
Multiplayer works in one installation but not the other
The difference may be the online service or Galaxy integration rather than the core game files. Confirm that the title requires Galaxy for invitations or another network function, and distinguish a launcher feature from a server requirement. A direct installation can remain valid for single-player use even when an online mode is unavailable.
A game behaves differently after switching methods
Galaxy and direct installation may use different folders, configuration files or save locations. Before switching, back up saves and note the installed version. Avoid running two copies that can update the same save directory until you know which files each installation uses.
Which method fits your situation?
Choose Galaxy first if you value convenience
- You regularly move between computers and the game supports cloud saves.
- You want automatic patching instead of manually tracking installer parts.
- You use achievements, friends, cross-play or multiplayer invitations supported by the title.
- You want one library and activity view for games connected to Galaxy.
Choose the direct installer first if you value independence
- You play on a machine that is offline or has restricted internet access.
- You want an installation that does not depend on a launcher being present.
- You are preserving a purchased game for future recovery.
- You need to keep a known installer version for a modded or carefully configured setup.
Use both when your priorities conflict
Archiving the installer costs time once and protects against later access problems; using Galaxy afterward preserves the conveniences you actually use. This approach avoids treating cloud saves or social features as mandatory while still allowing them when a supported title benefits from them.
Verdict
For most active players, Galaxy is the convenient front end: it handles installation and updates and can add cloud saves, achievements, invitations and cross-play. For ownership, offline play and preservation, the standalone installer is the stronger foundation because it does not require the Galaxy client for the DRM-free core game. Download and store that installer even if you normally play through Galaxy, then choose the client or the direct executable according to the feature you need for a particular game.
