GNUSlashLinux, also called Lunar Echoes, is an Arch-based rolling-release distribution built around the niri Wayland compositor and Noctalia Shell. Its project README describes a keyboard-driven desktop and a simple install path: download the ISO, put it on a USB drive, and boot from it. The available project material does not establish minimum hardware requirements or a support matrix.
What GNUSlashLinux is
The GNUSlashLinux project describes Lunar Echoes as a distribution developed by Alien-Tec for developers, system administrators, and power users. That is the project’s own audience positioning, not an independently measured user profile. Its README identifies Arch Linux as the base, Pacman as the package manager, and the system as a rolling release. GNUSlashLinux project page
In practical terms, this is an Arch-derived Linux distribution with a curated desktop setup rather than a separate operating-system line organized around numbered releases. Arch’s rolling-release explanation describes one-time installation followed by ongoing software upgrades, generally without reinstalling to move between numbered versions. That is Arch’s model; it does not by itself establish GNUSlashLinux-specific support promises. Arch Linux: About

niri manages windows
niri is a Wayland compositor and window manager. The GNUSlashLinux README describes its layout as a horizontally scrolling band of windows, with a keyboard-driven workflow. This is a different way to arrange and navigate windows from a conventional desktop that primarily uses overlapping, freely positioned windows.

Noctalia Shell supplies desktop controls
Noctalia Shell sits alongside niri and provides user-facing desktop features listed by the project, including status bars, an application launcher, notifications, and a control center. The README also lists Kitty, Helix, yazi, Double Commander, and Helium Browser among the included tools. These are components named by the project, not independent claims about performance or suitability for every user.
What rolling release means for updates
The GNUSlashLinux README describes regular updates using pacman -Syu. Arch explains its rolling-release model as continuing software upgrades after an initial installation; the Arch documentation also describes Pacman, official repositories, and the Arch User Repository (AUR). The available GNUSlashLinux material does not establish its own repository guarantees or support policy, so Arch’s general documentation should not be read as a promise about how GNUSlashLinux handles every package or update.

Download and install GNUSlashLinux
- Check the current project files page. The listing available on 2026-10-02 showed
GNUSlashLinux_20261002_Final.iso, sized 2.6 GB. File names and availability can change, so check the live GNUSlashLinux files page rather than assuming that snapshot remains current. - Transfer the ISO to a USB drive. The project README names Ventoy as one method. It does not state a minimum USB capacity, speed rating, or required model.
- Boot the computer from that USB media. The README outlines booting from the prepared drive as the next installation step. Consult the project’s current instructions for any details beyond that basic path.
Hardware and compatibility considerations
The surfaced GNUSlashLinux README does not provide a verified minimum for RAM, storage, processor, graphics hardware, system architecture, or USB capacity. That means the available documentation is not enough to determine whether a particular computer meets official GNUSlashLinux requirements.
niri’s general Getting Started documentation recommends enabling 3D acceleration for virtual machines and notes possible NVIDIA issues, including a black screen during startup and high VRAM use. It also discusses keeping drivers current and enabling kernel mode setting in some situations. These are general niri caveats, not confirmed GNUSlashLinux defects or guaranteed fixes. niri: Getting Started

Who may find GNUSlashLinux a good fit
- Consider it if you want an Arch-based rolling system whose default desktop is centered on niri, keyboard-driven window management, and Noctalia Shell.
- Check the details first if you need published minimum specifications, a definitive hardware support matrix, or a clearly documented project-specific update and support policy.
- Expect a different desktop workflow if you are accustomed to arranging windows mainly with a mouse in a traditional overlapping-window environment.
