Gnoke Persist is a JavaScript library developers can add to web apps to recover form entries after a refresh and queue browser-based file writes for recovery. It is not documented as a browser extension for ordinary users, and it cannot silently restore directory permission when the browser requires a user gesture.
What Gnoke Persist does
The project combines three pieces: form-state storage, a write-ahead queue for file changes, and an orchestration layer that coordinates recovery. Its README describes a script-bundle integration in which the application supplies an IndexedDB-like database adapter. These are maintainer-described capabilities, not independently verified results.
Spirit: recover form entries
Spirit records form values in IndexedDB and restores them when a page is reopened or refreshed. The project says it captures values through a debounced input listener and attempts a final sync when the document receives a visibilitychange event. A final sync attempt is not a guarantee: browser shutdown and IndexedDB commit timing can still affect whether the latest change was stored.
Shelf: queue file writes
Shelf records a pending write in IndexedDB before the application sends it to disk. The repository describes a queue per filename and replay of shelved writes during a later wake. This is an intended recovery design, not proof that every queued write will reach disk in every failure scenario.

Bridge: coordinate recovery
Bridge coordinates form restoration, reacquisition of access to a previously selected directory, and flushing queued writes. The README describes calling wake() to restore state, reacquire the directory handle, and flush shelved writes. The application still needs to account for browser permission requirements and the user interaction they may demand.
Browser support depends on the feature
The repository’s support matrix distinguishes form recovery from file-system features. It documents support; it is not an independent compatibility test.

- Used Book in Good Condition
| Feature | Documented browsers | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Form-state persistence (Spirit) | Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari | The project lists form recovery for these browsers. |
| SaveNative and Bridge | Chrome, Edge | The project lists these file-system features for Chromium browsers because its support model relies on showDirectoryPicker(). |
Do not infer that support for form recovery means the file-system bridge works in the same browser. Check the repository’s current matrix before adopting it, since browser APIs and project support can change.

When directory permission has been lost, the user must click to reopen access. Gnoke Persist does not bypass browser permission controls or silently grant access. The README’s description is apt: “It’s a durability layer, not a magic wand—you still have to handle the user click to open the door.”
That requirement affects product design: explain why access is needed, provide a clear action for restoring it, and account for the possibility that the user declines or does not complete the prompt. A queued write is not the same as a confirmed write to disk.
Privacy and durability limits to plan for
Field-name filtering is not a security boundary
The project says Spirit excludes sensitive fields using terms such as password, token, and secret. This kind of name-based filter is a convenience, not encryption or a cryptographic vault. It cannot establish that every sensitive value is excluded: applications should avoid persisting confidential fields and decide explicitly which data is safe to store.

Recovery is best-effort, not a quantified guarantee
Debounced storage and a visibility-change sync provide opportunities to save state, while IndexedDB-backed shelving provides a replay path for file writes. The reviewed project materials do not provide independent benchmarks, failure-rate measurements, or a guarantee that the latest form input or every queued write survives process termination. Treat the library as a recovery aid and design the application to communicate unsaved or unflushed work.
Version and license information
The repository changelog lists v0.1.2, including changes to shared Spirit storage and reset/version-change handling. The author’s article footer still says v0.1.1, so the repository changelog is the newer of those two version references. The repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed, with attribution to Edmund Sparrow, 2026. Verify the repository’s current release and license before integrating it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When it may fit a web app
- Your app needs a way to restore ordinary form values after a refresh or tab loss.
- Your workflow writes files through supported browser file-system APIs and can ask the user to restore directory access when needed.
- You can decide which form fields are safe to persist and communicate when queued changes have not yet been flushed.
- You are prepared to test the specific browser and recovery paths your users rely on; documented support is not a substitute for application testing.
Gnoke Persist is therefore most relevant to developers building web applications, not to people looking for a setting or extension to install in their browser. Its value is the recovery structure it offers; the application remains responsible for permissions, sensitive data decisions, and clear failure handling.
