Gmail Live is Google’s new voice-driven inbox search experience. On supported iOS and Android devices, eligible subscribers can ask questions in ordinary language and hear a spoken, Gemini-generated answer based on their email. A source card appears at each conversational turn so you can inspect the messages behind the answer.
The rollout began October 15, 2026, and Google says feature visibility can take up to 15 days. At launch, access is limited to people in the United States whose Gmail language is set to EN-US.
What Gmail Live does
Gmail Live turns inbox search into a spoken conversation. Instead of constructing a query with keywords, you can ask about a shipment, a deadline, a manager’s latest message or travel details. Google says the experience is powered by its latest Gemini models and synthesizes information from relevant email.
Google’s launch examples include:
- “What is the order status for Black Forest Construction Supply?”
- “When is my next mandatory training due?”
- “Show me the latest update from my manager, John.”
- “What gate is my flight leaving from tomorrow?”
Gmail Live is designed for questions that may require understanding several messages rather than finding one exact phrase. Google also says users can select a voice for the spoken responses.

Who can use Gmail Live
Gmail Live is tied to paid Google AI subscriptions and specified Google Workspace editions. The current launch scope is:

When Gmail Live arrives
Google Workspace Updates says Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains began a gradual rollout on October 15, 2026. Google allows up to 15 days for the feature to become visible, so two eligible accounts may not receive the Live entry point on the same day.

At launch, Google lists availability only in the United States with English (United States), or EN-US, selected as the language. The announcement does not establish an international release date or support for other languages.

How to start a Gmail Live search
- Use a supported mobile device. Open Gmail on a supported iOS or Android phone or tablet while signed in to an eligible account.
- Find Live in the search bar. Tap the Live entry point in Gmail’s search bar. If it is missing, the account may not yet be included in the rollout, or its region, language, plan or administrator settings may not qualify.
- Allow microphone access. The first launch prompts you to grant Gmail permission to use the microphone. Approve the permission if you want to ask questions by voice.
- Ask a specific inbox question. Speak naturally, such as asking for a flight gate, training deadline or the latest message from a named person.
- Check the source card. Google says an email source card is shown prominently at every conversational turn. Open the referenced message or messages to verify dates, names, status and other details.
- Continue the conversation. Ask a follow-up when the first answer needs clarification. You can also choose a voice inside Gmail Live.
What Gmail Live is—and is not
It is an inbox-aware voice search
The feature uses natural-language questions and returns synthesized answers drawn from email. This makes it useful when the information is distributed across threads or expressed in different wording.
It is not a published accuracy guarantee
Google has not published an accuracy, adoption, response-time or satisfaction statistic for Gmail Live. Treat the spoken answer as a convenient summary, and use the source card to confirm important information such as travel arrangements, compliance deadlines, payment status or work instructions.

It is separate from ordinary keyword search
Traditional Gmail search remains available. Gmail Live is an additional conversational entry point rather than a replacement for every search workflow.
How Gmail Live relates to Gmail AI Overviews
Gmail also offers AI Overviews, a related natural-language search feature described in Google Help. AI Overviews can answer a question or summarize information scattered across multiple emails, placing the overview above the normal search results.

Google says AI Overviews require English, an eligible consumer AI plan or Workspace plan, and both relevant smart-feature settings enabled. They are unavailable when certain search operators are used, including is:unread and from:. Those restrictions apply to AI Overviews; Gmail Live is accessed through its separate Live entry point.
If Live does not appear
- Check the account and plan: Confirm that Gmail is signed in to the consumer or Workspace account covered by Google’s listed plans.
- Check location and language: The launch supports the United States and EN-US only. An account outside that scope, or using another Gmail language, may not qualify yet.
- Allow microphone access: On iOS or Android, review Gmail’s microphone permission in the device’s app-permission settings, then reopen Gmail.
- Allow for the rollout window: Google says visibility can take up to 15 days from the October 15, 2026 start of the gradual rollout.
- Ask a Workspace administrator: Organization-level controls or edition settings can affect access for managed accounts.
- Check smart-feature settings for AI Overviews: If the problem concerns the overview above ordinary search results rather than the Live button, verify that the required Gmail smart-feature settings are enabled.
What to verify before relying on an answer
Use the source card as part of the workflow, especially when an answer combines several messages. Confirm that the referenced email is current, that the sender is the person or organization you expect, and that dates or status language has not changed in a later thread. Gmail Live’s launch materials describe how answers are sourced but do not provide a formal accuracy rate.

Google Workspace Product Vice President Yulie Kwon Kim described the broader Live launch to TechRadar on September 4, 2026: “Whether searching your inbox, organizing your thoughts, or brainstorming, the new capabilities in Gmail, Docs, and Keep let you do it all conversationally.” For Gmail specifically, the practical change is voice-first access to information already stored in your mailbox, with the source message kept visible for verification.
