Gmail for Android can do more than sort messages: swipe actions speed up triage, notification controls quiet less important mail, and snooze turns messages into timed follow-ups. You can also schedule outgoing email and, when eligible, use newer Gemini features. Here’s how to set up each control—and where its limits matter.
How do I change Gmail swipe actions on Android?
Set each swipe direction to the action you use most often, such as archiving routine mail or snoozing a message that needs attention later. Gmail offers actions including archive, delete, mark read or unread, move to a label, and snooze. Menu wording can vary with the app version.
- Open Gmail and tap the menu, then Settings.
- For settings shared across accounts in the app, tap General settings. To adjust a particular account, select that account instead.
- Tap Mail swipe actions, then choose Change for the left or right swipe.
- Select the action you want for that direction. Repeat for the other direction if useful.
For example, you might assign Archive to one side for messages you have handled and Snooze to the other for messages you must revisit. General settings apply across accounts added to Gmail; account-specific settings apply to the selected account. Google’s Android Gmail settings guide lists the available settings and swipe actions.

Snoozing temporarily removes a message from your inbox and brings it back at the day and time you choose. It is useful for a follow-up that belongs in your inbox later rather than now.

- Open the message you want to revisit.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Snooze.
- Choose a suggested time or set a day and time that suits your follow-up.
To snooze more quickly, assign Snooze to a left or right swipe using the Mail swipe actions setting above. Find deferred messages in the Snoozed folder or search for in:snoozed. If you want Gmail to alert you when the message returns, notifications must be enabled. Google’s snooze instructions explain the feature and its notification requirement.
How do I reduce Gmail notification noise?
Gmail notifications have two layers: Android must allow notifications for the app, and Gmail must be configured to notify you for the account or mail you care about. If alerts do not arrive, check both rather than changing only the in-app setting.

- In Android device settings, open the app’s notification settings and make sure Gmail notifications are allowed. Device menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- In Gmail, tap the menu, open Settings, and select the account you want to adjust.
- Tap Email notifications and choose the notification level that fits that account. Gmail also offers high-priority-only notifications.
- If you want alerts for particular labels, configure label notifications and make sure those labels are synced.
Decide which accounts and labels deserve an interruption before enabling alerts broadly. Google’s Gmail notification guide covers device notifications, account settings, and label syncing.
How do I schedule an email in Gmail on Android?
Scheduled send lets you compose a message now and choose when Gmail should send it. The selected time is based on the time zone in effect when you schedule it; delivery may occur a few minutes after that time, so it is not a precise-to-the-minute guarantee.

- Compose your email and address it as usual.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Schedule send.
- Choose one of the suggested times or select a date and time.
To stop a scheduled message, open the Scheduled folder and cancel its sending; Gmail returns it to drafts. Google documents a limit of up to 100 scheduled emails. See Google’s scheduled email instructions for the current steps and timing caveat.
What does Gmail confidential mode protect?
Confidential mode can set an expiration date, allow you to remove access before that date, and restrict ordinary recipient options to forward, copy, print, or download message text and attachments. It can also require an SMS passcode; availability of that option varies by region.

It is not a guarantee that recipients cannot preserve or share what they see. Google warns that recipients can still take screenshots or photos, and malicious programs may still copy or download content. Treat confidential mode as a way to limit certain built-in actions—not as end-to-end encryption or a safe way to send information that must never be disclosed. Google’s confidential mode guidance describes its controls and limitations.

Are Gmail Smart features and Gemini available to everyone?
Gmail’s smart features include tools such as inbox categories, Smart Compose, and spam detection. Google explains that Gmail uses data to provide these features and provides controls for smart-feature personalization. The exact controls depend on the account settings. Gemini features are an optional layer, not a baseline Android Gmail capability for every user. Google’s availability information varies by account type or plan, language, geography, and platform; some capabilities are listed for Android, but access is conditional and can change. Check Google’s current Gemini feature availability page for your account and location before relying on features such as AI Inbox, summaries, Gmail search over email, or Gmail Live.
