There is no single Gmail notification switch that works across every device. To restore alerts, check Gmail’s setting for the affected account and the separate notification permission on your phone, browser, or computer. On Android, also verify Gmail sync—and sync the label if you expect alerts for a particular label.
Start with the setting for your device
Use the steps for the device where you expect to see alerts. Gmail’s in-app choices and your device or browser’s notification permissions are separate controls, so an enabled Gmail setting alone may not be enough. Google’s notification setup guide covers Android, iPhone and iPad, and desktop.
Android
- In Gmail, tap Menu → Settings, then select the account that is missing alerts.
- Tap Email notifications and choose the notification level you want.
- In Gmail’s general settings, open Manage notifications and check that Gmail notifications are allowed in Android’s device settings too.
- Return to the account’s settings and make sure Sync Gmail is checked. With sync off, Gmail requires a manual refresh to retrieve new messages.
Google says notifications are on by default for messages in the Primary label. The available levels include All, High priority only, and None (wording can vary by app version). Choosing high-priority-only alerts can reduce interruptions, but it can also leave out messages Gmail does not classify as important. See Google’s Android notification and sync instructions.
iPhone and iPad
- In iOS or iPadOS Settings, open Gmail’s notification settings and allow notifications.
- In Gmail, tap Menu → Settings → Notifications → Email notifications, then choose the level you want.
- If Gmail contains more than one account, select and configure each account separately.
The iOS device permission and Gmail’s account-level notification choice are distinct. Check both if alerts are missing. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions describe the Gmail setting.

Desktop web
- In Gmail, select Settings → See all settings.
- Under Desktop notifications, choose New mail notifications on, Important mail notifications on, or Mail notifications off.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Save Changes.
Gmail’s documented desktop notifications work in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari when you are signed in and have Gmail open. If the Gmail option is enabled but alerts still do not appear, allow notifications for Gmail in the browser and check your operating system’s notification controls. Choose between broad and important-only alerts
The right level depends on whether you want an alert for every qualifying new message or fewer alerts filtered by Gmail’s importance classification. The available options and their effects vary by platform:

Google says Gmail’s importance classification uses several signals: whom you email and how often, which messages you open or reply to, and which messages you star, archive, or delete. You can click an importance marker to correct it, but Google does not promise that a correction will make classification immediate or perfect. See Google’s explanation of importance markers.
Fix alerts for a particular Android label
If only messages under one label fail to alert, check that label’s own sync and notification controls. Google notes that a label cannot send notifications if its messages are not synchronized.

- In Gmail, open Menu → Settings and choose the account.
- Tap Manage labels, then select the label in question.
- Set Sync messages to Last 30 days or All.
- Open that label’s notification settings and enable the notifications you want.
These label-specific controls are part of Gmail for Android; do not look for the same label-sync procedure as an iPhone or iPad setting. If Android alerts remain absent after checking account and label settings, Google directs users to its Gmail sync troubleshooting guidance.
Understand desktop category limits
When Gmail inbox categories are enabled, desktop New mail notifications apply to Primary-category messages. Promotions, Updates, Social, or Forums mail may therefore arrive without producing that new-mail alert. Check the category tabs before concluding that Gmail notifications have stopped working. Inbox layout is not the same as a notification setting
Gmail offers inbox layouts including Default, Important first, Unread first, Starred first, Priority Inbox, and—on desktop—Multiple Inboxes. Priority Inbox can show sections such as Important and unread, Starred, Everything else, or a chosen label. These layouts help organize what you see in your inbox; selecting one does not guarantee that your phone or computer will display a push or desktop alert. If alerts still do not appear
- Check the account: Make sure you changed the setting for the Gmail account that receives the missing message. On iPhone or iPad, configure each account separately.
- Check the second permission layer: On a phone, verify device-level permission as well as Gmail’s setting. On desktop, verify browser and operating-system permission as well as Gmail’s setting.
- Check delivery and scope: On Android, confirm Gmail sync is on; for label-specific alerts, confirm the label is synced. On desktop, confirm Gmail is open in a supported browser and consider whether the message is outside Primary.
- Check filtering: If you chose important-only notifications, review the message’s importance marker or switch to a broader alert level if you need notifications beyond Gmail-classified important mail.
Google’s Android troubleshooting sequence says: “If you still don’t get notifications, learn how to fix sync errors with the Gmail app.”
