Gmail automatically saves messages you are composing in the Drafts label. Open Drafts and select a message to continue it. If you discarded a draft, Google says it cannot be recovered.
Where Gmail saves drafts
On a computer, select Compose to start a message. Gmail saves work in progress under the Drafts label. To return to it, open Drafts and select the message. Google documents automatic saving but does not specify an exact save delay, so do not assume a particular wait time before a draft appears. Google’s instructions for creating and sending Gmail messages describe this workflow.
Can you recover a discarded Gmail draft?
No. Google’s missing-message guidance says a discarded draft cannot be recovered. Do not count on finding a discarded draft in Trash. Google’s guidance for missing Gmail messages explains this limitation.
What to check if a draft is missing
Before concluding a message is gone, check the places and account conditions Google recommends:

- Check Trash and Spam.
- Look on other devices or mail clients synced with the account; another client or device may have changed or deleted the message.
- Review filters and forwarding, POP, or IMAP settings that may affect how messages are handled.
These checks may help explain a missing message, but they do not undo a deliberate discard. See Google’s missing-message troubleshooting steps.
Draft, template, or Google Docs email draft?
Choose based on whether you are composing one message, reusing standard text, or collaborating on a document.

| Option | Best suited to | Work surface and handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail draft | One message in progress | Composed and saved in Gmail’s Drafts label. |
| Gmail template | Text reused in messages whose information does not change often | Enabled and managed in Gmail on a computer; insert it into a message when needed. |
| Email draft in Google Docs | Collaborative drafting in a document | Composed in Docs, then previewed in Gmail for further changes before sending. |
Save reusable text with a Gmail template
Templates are different from drafts: a template is reusable starting text, not a particular message you are still writing. On a computer, turn on Templates in Gmail settings, compose the text, and save it as a template. You can later insert or overwrite a saved template. Google says deleted templates cannot be recovered. Follow Google’s Gmail template instructions.
Draft collaboratively in Google Docs
On a computer, insert the Email draft building block in Docs, or type @email, then enter recipients and message text. Collaborators can work in the document. Preview the email in Gmail and make any further changes there before sending. Google says the Gmail preview flow requires the Google Account language to be English. A Docs email draft is a separate drafting workflow; do not assume it is already a message in Gmail’s Drafts label. See Google’s instructions for email drafts in Docs.

What happens when you send while offline?
Google’s documented offline workflow applies to sending while offline: the message is saved in a new Outbox and sent automatically after the connection returns. Gmail offline requires Chrome and does not work in an Incognito window. This Outbox behavior is a queue for offline sending, not a general backup or a guarantee that every interruption preserves every draft. See Google’s Gmail offline instructions.
