To make Gmail your default email app, set it in Default Apps on a supported iPhone or iPad. On a Windows computer, email links involve two settings: Gmail must handle the link in Chrome, and Chrome must handle Windows’ MAILTO protocol. These settings affect supported email actions or clicked email links; they do not change your email provider or make Gmail the default inside every application.
Set Gmail as the default on iPhone or iPad
- Open the device’s Default Apps settings.
- Select Gmail as the default mail app.
Google’s current guidance says iOS 18.0 or later is required to set its listed defaults. The option must also be available on your device. Google does not specify one Settings route that applies to every iOS or iPadOS release, so menu labels and navigation can vary. If Gmail or the Default Apps control is missing, check for a software update and whether your device supports the option. Route Windows email links to Gmail through Chrome
This Windows 10 and Windows 11 sequence is described in a Google Help Community answer by a Diamond Product Expert, who is not Google staff. Community guidance may be unverified or out of date, so treat it as a practical method rather than an official Google desktop procedure.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://settings/handlersand make sure sites can ask to handle protocols. - Visit Gmail in Chrome. When Chrome asks whether
mail.google.comcan open email links, allow it. - In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for
MAILTO, and assign Google Chrome. - Click an email link to check whether Gmail’s compose window opens.
The setup depends on both parts: Gmail’s site-level handler in Chrome and Windows’ MAILTO association with Chrome. If no prompt appears, check that Chrome allows sites to ask to handle protocols, then revisit Gmail. Labels may change with browser or Windows updates. Which browsers can open Gmail on a computer?
Google lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge as supported computer browsers. Gmail works best with the newest and previous version of those browsers; cookies and JavaScript need to be enabled. Check Gmail’s supported-browser requirements if Gmail does not load or the handler setup fails.
