The GM 6.6L L8T gasoline V8 takes dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30. GM’s 2026 capacity chart lists 7.6 L (8.0 U.S. qt) with the oil filter for Silverado HD 2500/3500 applications and identifies PF63 as the oil filter. Change the oil when the oil-life system requests it, but never let a change go beyond one year. The 2025 Silverado HD manual says a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message should be handled within the next 600 miles (1,000 km).
Which vehicles use the L8T specification?
The L8T is GM’s 6.6L naturally aspirated gasoline V8 used in heavy-duty applications. The published capacity information covers Silverado HD 2500 and 3500 trucks. GM’s chart also lists the same L8T oil specification for Express vans and Low Cab Forward vehicles. Because equipment, model year and calibration can differ, treat your vehicle’s owner’s manual as the final authority when it conflicts with a general chart.
Before ordering parts, confirm all four identifiers: model year, vehicle line, drivetrain and engine code. A 6.6L gasoline engine is not automatically the same application as a diesel, and a filter that fits one GM engine family may not fit another.

Use the required viscosity and approval
Use SAE 5W-30 carrying GM’s dexos1 approval. The viscosity describes how the oil flows in cold conditions and at operating temperature; the dexos1 approval indicates that the formulation has met GM’s gasoline-engine performance requirements. Do not substitute a diesel-only formulation or choose a viscosity solely because it is common in another GM engine. Check the container for the current dexos approval mark and follow the exact manual for your model year and climate.

Understand the published capacity
For Silverado HD L8T applications, GM’s 2026 chart gives 7.6 L (8.0 U.S. qt) with the filter. That is a service-fill reference, not permission to pour the entire amount in without checking the dipstick. Drain time, vehicle position and the amount left in the old filter can change the final level. Add most of the listed quantity, run the engine briefly, wait for the oil to settle on level ground, and bring the level to the marked range. Overfilling can be as harmful as running low.
Keep the unit conversion straight
The chart’s 7.6 L and 8.0 U.S. quarts describe the same approximate fill. Imperial (U.K.) quarts are different, so use the unit shown in your manual and on your measuring container. If your vehicle is an Express or Low Cab Forward, verify its own capacity rather than assuming the Silverado figure applies unchanged.
Oil-filter fitment
GM and ACDelco references
For the Silverado HD L8T application, GM lists oil filter 12707246, sold through ACDelco as PF63. Match both the part number and the engine/application listing when buying a filter. Aftermarket catalogues can contain supersessions or multiple PF-series sizes, so a filter that merely looks similar is not sufficient evidence of fit.

What to check before installation
- Compare the new filter’s part number with the vehicle-specific catalogue entry.
- Inspect the old filter’s sealing gasket and make sure it is not stuck to the mounting surface.
- Lightly coat the new gasket with clean engine oil before installation.
- Install the filter according to the filter maker’s instructions; do not add a torque value that is not printed for that part.
- After starting the engine, inspect the filter and drain area for leaks, then recheck the oil level.
When to change L8T oil
Use the oil-life monitor, with an annual backstop
The 2025 Silverado HD owner’s manual instructs owners to check oil level and the oil-life percentage every 7,500 miles (12,000 km). That checkpoint is for checking the system and level; it is not a promise that every truck can wait exactly that distance between changes. Change the oil and filter when the display calls for service, and change both at least once every 12 months even if the percentage has not reached zero.

Respond to the warning message
When the truck displays CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON, the manual says to arrange the service within the next 600 miles (1,000 km). The instruction is deliberately time-sensitive: the oil should be changed as soon as possible, rather than waiting for a convenient future service. Reset the oil-life system after every oil change so the next calculation starts with the correct baseline.
Why mileage alone is not enough
The monitor estimates remaining oil life from operating conditions. Idling, repeated short trips, towing, heat and other demanding use can consume the estimate faster than steady highway travel. Conversely, a truck driven very lightly can reach the calendar limit before the mileage limit. Use whichever limit arrives first: the monitor request or one year.
Other filters and their intervals
Engine air filter
In the 2024 Silverado HD parts table, GM lists engine air filter 84121219, with ACDelco reference A3244C. Trucks equipped with the engine air-filter life monitor should follow its messages. Replace the element when the display says REPLACE AT NEXT OIL CHANGE or REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER SOON, then reset the monitor. Do not reset it merely because the housing was opened for inspection; reset after the element is actually replaced.
Passenger-compartment (cabin) filter
The listed cabin filter is GM 13508023, ACDelco CF185. The Silverado HD schedule calls for replacement every 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months, whichever comes first. Dusty roads, heavy traffic pollution, seasonal allergens, weak airflow, window fogging or persistent odors are practical reasons to replace it sooner. A clean cabin filter improves airflow through the HVAC system, but it does not repair a blower, evaporator or duct problem.

Documented Silverado HD maintenance intervals
The following intervals come from the Silverado HD maintenance schedule and should be read with the severe-use provisions and the exact model-year manual.
| Item | Interval | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | When the oil-life system requests service; at least once every 12 months | Reset the oil-life system after each change. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message should be addressed within 600 miles (1,000 km). |
| Engine oil level and oil-life check | Every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) | This is a checking interval, not a guaranteed oil-change interval. |
| Cabin air filter | 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months | Replace earlier when dust, pollution, allergens, odors, fogging or reduced airflow make it necessary. |
| Transfer-case fluid | 50,000 miles (80,500 km) | Applies when the vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive. |
| Spark plugs | 97,500 miles (156,000 km) | Inspect plug wires and boots at the same service. |
| Body and hood lift-support struts | 100,000 miles (161,000 km) or 10 years | Whichever comes first. |
| Engine coolant | 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or six years | Whichever comes first. |
These are scheduled reference points, not a substitute for checking fluid condition, leaks, warning lamps or drivability between services. A truck that develops a coolant leak, misfire, oil leak or overheating condition needs diagnosis immediately rather than waiting for the next mileage milestone.
Normal service versus severe use
GM identifies public-service, military and commercial vehicles as severe-condition examples and specifically includes ambulances, police cars and emergency-rescue vehicles. Those vehicles can experience long idling periods, repeated starts, high accessory loads and demanding duty cycles that require more frequent maintenance than the normal schedule.
If your L8T is used in one of those roles, open the severe-service section of the manual for that exact model year. Do not automatically apply the normal 7,500-mile checking checkpoint as your complete schedule. Record both mileage and engine hours when your fleet process tracks them, and have the service provider document which severe-use schedule was used.

How to complete an L8T oil service
- Verify the application. Confirm the engine code, model year and vehicle line, then obtain dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30 and the correct filter for that application.
- Prepare safely. Park on a level surface, secure the vehicle, allow hot components to cool enough for safe access, and use stands or ramps rated for the truck if lifting is required. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Drain the old oil. Place a suitable drain pan under the drain point, remove the drain plug carefully, and allow the oil to drain fully. Reinstall the plug using the vehicle or component manufacturer’s specified procedure; the supplied schedule does not establish a universal plug torque.
- Replace the filter. Remove the old filter, confirm its gasket came off with it, prepare the new gasket with a thin film of clean oil, and install the replacement without cross-threading.
- Add the new oil. Pour in most of the charted service quantity, keeping the container clean. Pause before the final amount so you can verify the dipstick reading.
- Check for leaks and level. Start the engine briefly, switch it off, wait for oil to drain back, and check the dipstick on level ground. Add small amounts until the level is within the marked range; do not exceed the upper mark.
- Reset the oil-life system. Use the oil-life reset command in the instrument-cluster or infotainment menus specified by your model-year manual. Confirm that the display shows the new baseline before returning the truck to service.
- Dispose of used oil properly. Keep the drained oil and old filter sealed and take them to a recycling or collection point that accepts automotive oil.
Choosing DIY, dealer or independent-shop service
The right service location is the one that can document the required specification and reset procedures, not simply the one that advertises the lowest price.
| Decision point | DIY service | Dealer or independent shop |
|---|---|---|
| Oil specification | You must verify the dexos1 approval and SAE 5W-30 label yourself. | Ask the adviser to write the approval and viscosity on the work order. |
| Parts fitment | Match the exact L8T listing for PF63/GM 12707246, A3244C/GM 84121219 or CF185/GM 13508023 as applicable. | Request the installed part numbers and confirm they match your VIN or engine application. |
| Monitor reset | Perform and verify the oil-life and, where fitted, air-filter monitor reset. | Confirm both resets are included before approving the job. |
| Interval selection | Apply the annual minimum and severe-use schedule from your manual. | Tell the shop about commercial, emergency, military, towing or extended-idle use. |
| Four-wheel drive | Track the transfer-case fluid milestone separately. | Ask whether the 50,000-mile transfer-case service applies to your drivetrain. |
Common mistakes and fixes
Using the wrong oil because the engine is gasoline
Gasoline alone does not identify the correct oil. The L8T requirement is dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30. If the container lacks the approval marking, choose another product or verify the specification with the manufacturer before filling.
Treating 7,500 miles as a mandatory change interval
The manual uses 7,500 miles (12,000 km) for checking oil level and oil-life percentage. The monitor can request service earlier, and the calendar can require service before that mileage. Follow the first limit reached.

Forgetting the reset
A fresh oil change with an old oil-life value can cause the next reminder to arrive at the wrong time. Reset immediately after the service and verify the displayed value.

Ordering by appearance instead of fitment
Filter dimensions can look interchangeable while the gasket, bypass characteristics or application listing differ. Use the GM or ACDelco reference tied to the engine and model, and recheck the catalogue when a part has been superseded.
Applying the normal schedule to an emergency or commercial truck
Public-service and commercial duty is specifically identified as severe use. Use the severe-service section for the exact vehicle rather than assuming private-use intervals are adequate.
Practical checklist before you buy parts
- Confirm “6.6L L8T” and the vehicle’s model year.
- Buy dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30.
- Confirm the filter reference for the application: PF63/GM 12707246 for the Silverado HD listing.
- Check whether the truck’s air-filter monitor is fitted and whether it has issued a replacement message.
- Schedule the cabin filter by 22,500 miles or 24 months, sooner in dusty or polluted conditions.
- Note whether the truck has four-wheel drive so the transfer-case interval is not missed.
- Plan for an oil-life reset and retain the service record.
- Use the exact owner’s manual for Express, Low Cab Forward and non-Silverado applications.
Bottom line
For the Silverado HD version of GM’s 6.6L L8T, the documented baseline is dexos1 SAE 5W-30, approximately 8.0 U.S. quarts (7.6 L) with the filter, and the PF63 oil filter. Let the oil-life monitor set the mileage timing, change the oil and filter at least annually, and act within 600 miles of a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message. Use the monitor for the engine air filter, replace the cabin filter on its mileage-or-time schedule, and adjust the plan for severe duty and four-wheel drive. Confirm every part and interval against the manual for your exact vehicle before service.
