Glean founder and CEO Arvind Jain says the enterprise-AI company is deliberately building for portability: customers should be able to change models or vendors without losing the organizational memory their AI coworkers have accumulated. “Our goal is to actually make us very easily replaceable,” Jain told The Next Web in an interview at HumanX in Amsterdam on September 23, 2026, reported October 15.
What Jain means by “easy to replace”
Jain is describing an attempt to avoid vendor lock-in, not an admission that Glean is failing. In his explanation, an AI coworker becomes more useful as it learns how a company works, receives corrections and builds institutional context. If that memory were trapped inside a particular model provider, switching vendors could mean starting over.
Glean’s approach is to store the memory and feedback in a standard format controlled by the customer rather than leaving it with a model provider such as Claude or OpenAI. The intended result is that an enterprise can replace the model, the interface or Glean itself while retaining the context its agents have learned. The portability claim is Jain’s stated design goal; the interview does not establish a universal export standard or guarantee frictionless migration for every customer configuration.
Glean’s role in an enterprise AI stack
From search engine to context layer
Glean began as an internal company search engine. It now connects to business systems including Salesforce, HubSpot, Jira, GitHub, and human-resources and IT tools. It maps where information lives and builds knowledge graphs connecting people, concepts and processes.

That layer can sit beneath another AI interface. Jain gave Claude as an example: instead of asking the model to search roughly 100 enterprise systems itself, Claude can request relevant context from Glean. Glean can also operate as an AI coworker and agent platform while routing work to models from several labs.
Model routing and cost claims
Jain said Glean prefers a model other than Claude for 85% to 90% of enterprise tasks because Claude is expensive and some GPT models can handle much of that work at an order of magnitude lower cost. Those percentages and cost comparisons are Jain’s statements, not an independently audited market benchmark.

Jain also cited Glean studies in which adding its context layer made Claude twice as fast, cut token use in half and made its answers preferred five times more often. The figures come from Glean’s own studies; the cited coverage does not provide independent test conditions, datasets or replication results.

Glean says it follows the permissions already configured in a customer’s systems. An employee should not be able to use Glean to read another employee’s inbox simply because the information is technically connected.

According to Jain, permission checks are enforced programmatically rather than delegated to an AI model. That distinction matters because a language model can misinterpret a request or make a confident mistake. The interview also says personal data, such as an employee’s LinkedIn messages, remains associated with that employee and does not automatically become company data.
Organizations assessing portability should therefore ask two separate questions: whether agent memory can be exported, and whether exported material preserves the source system’s access controls. A portable file that loses document-level permissions would create a security problem rather than solve a lock-in problem.

What Glean says about its scale and origins
The Next Web reported Jain’s estimates that Glean has more than 1,000 large-enterprise customers, millions of users and about 1,500 employees. Jain said word of mouth and users taking Glean to a new employer are the company’s biggest growth channel. These are interview claims attributed to Jain, not independently verified customer or workforce counts.

How to evaluate the replaceability promise
“Easy to replace” is useful only if a buyer can test it in contracts and operations. An enterprise comparing Glean with a model vendor’s enterprise product or another workplace assistant should request specific answers in these areas:
- Memory and feedback: What agent memories, corrections, instructions and workflow histories can the customer export?
- Format and ownership: Is the export machine-readable, documented and controlled by the customer, or dependent on a proprietary service?
- Connectors and knowledge coverage: Which systems are indexed, how quickly do changes appear, and how are people, concepts and processes linked?
- Model choice: Can administrators route tasks among models, set cost or latency policies, and change providers without rebuilding agents?
- Permission enforcement: Are authorization checks performed against source-system permissions at request time, and are those checks logged?
- Agent governance: Can administrators review actions, restrict tools, approve high-impact operations and disable an agent cleanly?
- Performance evidence: Are speed, token use and answer-preference results measured on the buyer’s own data rather than relying only on vendor studies?
- Exit plan and cost: What data, connectors and workflows remain usable after cancellation, and what migration assistance or fees apply?
Jain’s view on jobs and workplace AI
Jain has paired the portability message with a consistent claim that workplace AI should augment people. Fortune reported his May 20, 2026 comments: “I don’t think AI—or actually, for me, hopefully forever, too—AI never replaces any human, and it just actually augments us, enables us, allows us to do higher quality work.”
He also told Fortune, “There are many who will talk about [whether] you can replace this role with AI, or that role with AI. But practically we work with the largest enterprises in the world, and we’re not seeing any role getting eliminated—not today.” That describes what Glean says it was observing among its enterprise customers at the time; it is not a forecast that layoffs cannot occur elsewhere.
For broader context, Fortune attributed 54,836 AI-linked layoff plans in 2025 and 71,825 tech-linked job-cut announcements since 2023 to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Those totals do not prove that AI caused every listed cut, but they show why claims about augmentation and replacement need careful definitions.
What the announcement means for buyers
Jain’s statement makes portability a product principle rather than a marketing promise about model quality. Glean is positioning itself as a context, permissions and agent layer that can work with multiple models. Buyers should treat the promise as a requirement to verify: demand export documentation, test permission behavior, measure performance on representative workloads and negotiate an exit plan before deploying agents at scale.
