Choose local Dev Containers if your team has capable developer machines, wants direct control over local resources, and can support the container runtime setup. Choose Gitpod/Ona if managed or customer-hosted compute, automated setup, or centrally standardized workspaces address a concrete team need. You can also use both: a shared Dev Container configuration can serve as a starting point for local and remote environments, but compatibility must be tested on each backend.

These are not equivalent technologies. A Dev Container is a configuration standard and execution format; Gitpod/Ona is a platform that can use that configuration and add environment provisioning and automation. “GitOps” here describes managing development configuration in version control—not a claim that Gitpod is a GitOps deployment platform.

What is actually being compared?

Dev Containers define the environment

The Dev Container Specification describes development containers and environments, including optional sidecar containers, to help teams create and recreate development setups. Its concise definition is: “A development container is a container in which a user can develop an application.” A repository can include configuration for items such as the image, mounts, ports, services, and lifecycle commands.

The specification is supported by multiple tools, but a shared format does not mean every tool supports every property or behaves identically.

Gitpod/Ona adds a platform layer

Gitpod documentation identifies Dev Containers and Automations as core configuration elements. The specification’s supporting-tools page lists Ona, formerly Gitpod, as adhering to the specification. The platform can therefore build on Dev Container configuration while providing environment provisioning and automation.

The title’s use of “GitOps” should be read narrowly: development setup can be kept in version control and changed through repository-managed configuration. The cited documentation does not establish Gitpod/Ona as a GitOps deployment platform.

How do local and Gitpod/Ona environments differ?

Decision axis Local Dev Containers Gitpod/Ona environment
Where work runs On the developer’s machine, using its resources. Gitpod documentation describes local, cloud, VPC, and on-premises options. Confirm which deployment is available for the intended product and organization.
Configuration Repository metadata can specify elements such as images, mounts, ports, services, and lifecycle commands. Gitpod documents Dev Containers and Automations as configuration elements, with version-controlled setup.
Consistency Shared configuration helps, but machines, runtimes, and implementations still need validation. The vendor positions the platform around standardized environments and automated setup; this is a product claim, not an independently measured outcome.
Isolation and infrastructure Depends on the local runtime, host machine, and team configuration; there is no universal security comparison. Gitpod describes a zero-trust approach and customer-controlled infrastructure options. Treat these as vendor claims, not an independent security audit.
Portability Multiple tools can consume specification-based metadata, but supported properties and behavior vary. Can use Dev Container configuration, though migration guidance notes manual adjustments may be needed.

When should you choose local Dev Containers?

Local execution is a good fit when the developer’s machine has enough capacity for the project, the team wants direct control over the host and runtime, and local container setup is manageable. It avoids making the development workflow depend on a hosted workspace for routine work, but leaves the team responsible for supporting local runtimes and differences between machines.

  • Prefer local when developers need direct access to local resources and can run the project comfortably on their machines.
  • Prefer local when the team can document and support the required container runtime setup.
  • Validate the configuration with the actual tools and machines the team uses; the specification alone does not guarantee uniform behavior.

When does Gitpod/Ona make more sense?

Consider the platform when remote or customer-hosted compute, automated workspace setup, isolated workspaces, or centrally standardized workflows solve a specific operational problem. Those are reasons to evaluate the platform, not proof that it will be faster, cheaper, or more secure for every team.

Before adopting it, confirm the product generation, deployment model, plan, and availability relevant to your organization. Current naming is not uniform across the cited material: the specification calls the tool Ona (formerly Gitpod), while some documentation paths retain Gitpod branding. Current pricing, geographic availability, and organization-specific plans are not established here.

Can the same Dev Container work locally and remotely?

Often, a repository’s Dev Container configuration can be used across multiple tools, including a local workflow and a Gitpod/Ona environment. Treat that as a portability starting point, not a guarantee. Check the properties and behaviors your project relies on in each intended backend:

How should Gitpod Classic users interpret migration guidance?

Gitpod’s migration guide describes a newer setup using .devcontainer/devcontainer.json and .gitpod/automations.yml to migrate environment definitions and ordered tasks from .gitpod.yml. It warns that manual changes may be necessary, including adjustments related to the default workspace folder. This is guidance for migration from Gitpod Classic; it is not a universal requirement for a new project or a description of every current Gitpod/Ona configuration.

Is either option faster, cheaper, or more secure?

The available documentation does not establish a universal winner on performance, cost, or security. Results depend on workload, infrastructure, local hardware, configuration, and the organization’s operating requirements. Gitpod’s security and infrastructure statements should be treated as vendor descriptions; they do not amount to an independent comparative assessment against local development.

Make the decision against your own constraints: where compute may run, who operates it, which controls are required, how developers connect, and what ongoing setup the team can support. Do not infer a cost or performance advantage without evaluating the actual deployment and workload.

A practical decision rule

  • Pick local Dev Containers when local capacity and control matter most and the team can support local setup.
  • Pick Gitpod/Ona when remote or customer-hosted compute, automation, isolated workspaces, or standardized onboarding solve a concrete need.
  • Use both when one repository configuration should support both local and managed or remote development; test compatibility on each backend.
