GitLab administrators should promptly upgrade affected installations: GitLab rates CVE-2026-97229 at CVSS 10.0 and says it could have allowed unauthenticated code execution on the server under certain conditions. The fixed releases are GitLab 19.2.8, 19.3.5, and 19.4.2. CERT-EU recommends prioritizing internet-facing self-managed instances.

Which GitLab versions are affected?

GitLab’s official security release note identifies these affected GitLab CE/EE version ranges and fixes, released on October 12, 2026:

Affected branch Affected versions Fixed release
19.2 Before 19.2.8 19.2.8
19.3 Before 19.3.5 19.3.5
19.4 Before 19.4.2 19.4.2

These ranges apply to both Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE). GitLab says its release-note scope covers all deployment types unless it specifies otherwise. Compare the complete version and patch level of your installation against the relevant branch; an installation already running that branch’s fixed release is not within the listed affected range.

Use GitLab’s official release note as the authority for the fixed versions: GitLab 19.4.2 patch release. CERT-EU’s advisory summary gives a conflicting 19.3.4 value; GitLab’s note identifies 19.3.5 as the fix for that branch.

What is CVE-2026-97229?

GitLab describes an integer overflow issue in the CI/CD regular expression compiler. Its security note says insufficient regular-expression validation could, under certain conditions, have allowed an unauthenticated user to execute arbitrary code on the GitLab server by supplying a specially crafted regular expression in a CI/CD configuration. This is a conditional vulnerability; the advisory does not say that every CI/CD configuration or request is exploitable.

GitLab says the vulnerability was reported by joaxcar through its HackerOne bug bounty program. The release note does not provide a direct quotation from the reporter.

How severe is the flaw, and what is known about exploitation?

GitLab assigns CVE-2026-97229 a CVSS 3.1 score of 10.0 and publishes the vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. In practical terms, the vector describes a network-accessible attack with low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, changed scope, and high potential impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The severity score describes the vulnerability, not the number of affected servers or the likelihood that a particular installation has been compromised. The reviewed GitLab and CERT-EU advisories provide no affected-installation count, confirmed compromise count, or statistic establishing exploitation in the wild. The possibility of code execution should therefore not be presented as evidence that an attack has occurred against a given instance.

What should GitLab administrators do?

  1. Inventory the installation. Record whether it runs CE or EE, its exact version and patch level, and whether it is self-managed or another deployment type. Check the version against the affected branches above.
  2. Plan the upgrade to a fixed release. For an affected branch, upgrade to at least its listed fix: 19.2.8, 19.3.5, or 19.4.2. GitLab advises upgrading affected installations to the latest version as soon as possible; follow GitLab’s release guidance for the applicable upgrade path.
  3. Prioritize internet-facing self-managed systems. CERT-EU independently recommends prompt upgrades and says to start with internet-facing self-managed GitLab CE/EE instances. This is a prioritization recommendation, not a claim that other affected installations are safe to leave unpatched.
  4. Verify the resulting version. After the upgrade, confirm the running GitLab version is at or beyond the applicable fixed release. If the instance remains on an affected version, the remediation is not complete.

GitLab’s release notes give the vendor’s affected ranges and fixes; CERT-EU’s advisory provides the independent urgency and exposure-prioritization recommendation: CERT-EU Security Advisory 2026-056.
