You can track GitHub repositories without a dedicated Trending endpoint, but a star-sorted search is only a proxy—not a copy of GitHub Trending. In an October 5, 2026 account, Felixwang007 describes rebuilding a digest around timestamped star counts and flagging four suspected malicious repositories whose README files reportedly directed readers to a shared remote PowerShell loader. Those findings are the author’s report, not an independently verified malware analysis.

Does GitHub provide an API for Trending?

GitHub’s REST API documents repository data and statistics, which can support a tracker you build. A GitHub Community discussion says there are no official REST endpoints for /trending or /explore; that is a community statement rather than a formal product guarantee, so check current documentation before relying on the endpoint’s availability or absence.

There are also unofficial options. The community-maintained github-trending-api project documents a REST wrapper sourced from Trending data. Its existence does not guarantee that the service is currently available, reliable, or endorsed by GitHub.

Felixwang007 says a request to github.com/trending timed out in one network test, while Trendshift returned an empty response in the same minute. That is one observation from that test, not evidence that either source is generally unavailable.

Why a star-sorted search is not the same as Trending

The author’s first substitute was a GitHub CLI repository search using a creation-date window and sorting by stars. It can surface recently created projects, but it does not reproduce Trending’s ranking:

  • Stars are cumulative. Sorting by total stars tends to favor projects that have had longer to accumulate attention.
  • A creation window narrows coverage. It misses older repositories that may be gaining attention now.
  • Popularity is not quality. A star count does not establish that a project is useful, safe, maintained, or genuine.

The GitHub REST documentation describes repository information and statistics as available inputs. A custom search can therefore be one part of a tracker, but do not label its results as an official Trending feed or assume it captures the same ranking.

Track star velocity with timestamped snapshots

A more useful signal for recent momentum is change over time, not the current total. Store each repository’s star count with the time it was observed, then compare successive observations. For two snapshots, a simple rate is the increase in stars divided by the elapsed time. This is a locally calculated estimate, not a GitHub-provided Trending score.

The estimate is only as good as the observations behind it. A missed snapshot makes the interval less precise; counts can change for reasons that do not reflect genuine interest; and the candidate repositories you choose, collection frequency, repository deletions, and API limits all affect coverage. Star velocity is a signal to investigate, not a verdict.

What the October 2026 report says it found

Felixwang007 reports that, among ten fast-rising repositories in a 72-hour window of newly created projects, four had a single README file and no code. The article names BlackCrewmanFringe/AutoCad, Blockadezoshack/Microsoft-Project, AxeEradicate/Fps-Booster-for-Windows, and beachbladesmanloop/Hwid-Spoofer. These are time-sensitive claims from the author’s October 5, 2026 account; the repositories’ current status and contents have not been independently confirmed here.

The author says the four READMEs pointed to ps-ps.cc/powershell/Loader.ps1 and urged readers to bypass execution-policy protections. The article reports that a HEAD request returned HTTP 200 and resolved to 196.251.107.72, while also saying the author did not download or execute the script. A successful response or IP resolution alone does not establish that a file is malicious. Do not run commands from an untrusted README or fetch a suspicious payload just to check it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The article also reports 1,349 stars across the four repositories in under 48 hours. For one repository, the author says 100 WatchEvents arrived in under five seconds, all in one burst, with zero forks. Felixwang007 interprets that pattern as suggestive of farmed stars; it does not establish who generated the events or why. These counts describe the article’s sample, not a general rate or prevalence estimate.

How to assess a repository without running its contents

A README-only repository is unusual in some contexts, but a small file count is not proof of maliciousness. The article’s control example, wy51ai/floorplan-3d, is described as a legitimate small repository with a working HTML application and substantial forks. That example supports a basic rule: assess the contents and behavior being requested, not the file count alone.

For an initial, non-execution review, look at several signals together:

  • Inspect the file tree and history. Check what is actually present and whether the repository’s history fits its stated purpose.
  • Read README commands as untrusted input. Be especially cautious when instructions download and immediately execute a remote script, or ask you to disable antivirus or other protections.
  • Check links and domains. Look for the same download host or payload domain appearing across unrelated projects.
  • Consider activity patterns in context. Compare stars with forks, review the timing of activity, and note whether creation and last-push times appear unusually close. None of these signals proves intent by itself.
  • Do not execute suspicious content on your everyday machine. If deeper analysis is necessary, use a properly isolated environment only if you are qualified to do so; reputable endpoint protection is an additional safeguard, not a substitute for caution.

Felixwang007 says the screening gate combined file inventory, forks, star-event timing, README instructions, repository timing, and shared domains, and that it would have rejected all four examples. The author argues that shared-domain clustering is more useful than treating each repository in isolation. These are heuristics from one reported sample, not a validated detector; the account provides no independent false-positive or false-negative evaluation. As the author puts it, “stars are the cheapest thing to fake”—a useful warning about treating popularity as proof, not a measured rule.

What this case does—and does not—establish

The report illustrates two different problems: star totals do not measure a repository’s current rate of growth, and a README can ask a reader to take risky actions even when the repository contains little or no code. It does not establish how common README-only malicious repositories are, prove that the four named projects delivered malware, or show that any screening workflow can reliably identify malicious repositories at scale.

A 2024 arXiv preprint offers broader context: its authors studied 35.2K GitHub repositories labeled as educational and report that ChatGPT labeled 9,294 as malicious, across categories including DDoS, keylogger, and ransomware. That result reflects the paper’s labeling method, not a verified count of malicious repositories or an estimate of how prevalent README-only malware is. It does not validate the four examples in Felixwang007’s report.
