To block a spammy user who comments on an eligible GitHub security advisory, open the three-dot menu beside the advisory description or the offending comment, choose the block action, and review the confirmation. The option applies to advisory pages in public repositories; who can use it depends on whether the repository belongs to an organization or a personal account.

Where the block action appears

GitHub announced the feature on August 25, 2026. On a security advisory in a public repository, open the three-dot menu on either the advisory description or a comment and select the block action. GitHub then presents a confirmation explaining what blocking means. See GitHub’s announcement and the GitHub Community release post.

Who is allowed to block someone?

  • Organization-owned repository: An organization moderator or administrator can initiate the block.
  • Personal-account-owned repository: The account owner can initiate the block.

Being a repository member alone does not establish permission to use this action.

What blocking changes

The moderation action removes the source of spam or abuse while leaving the security advisory intact and available. GitHub describes the update as bringing to advisories a streamlined moderation experience already used for issues and pull requests. The announcement does not state that this action deletes the advisory.
