You can send GitHub push updates to a Discord text channel without running an always-on server: create a Discord webhook, then add it to the repository’s GitHub webhook settings with /github appended to its URL. This sends repository push events to Discord; it does not create a personal GitHub notification feed.

What this setup does

Discord’s incoming webhook provides a destination URL for a chosen text channel, and GitHub sends repository event data to the URL configured for a webhook. Discord documents this approach for sending code merge or push updates into a server channel. The direct setup uses those built-in features, so you do not need to operate a webhook receiver of your own. See Discord’s webhook overview and GitHub’s explanation of webhooks.

Set up GitHub push updates in Discord

  1. Create a Discord webhook. In Discord, open the server’s Server Settings > Integrations, create a webhook, select the text channel for updates, and copy the webhook URL. Discord lets you name the webhook and choose its channel. The interface may change; consult Discord’s Server Integrations help page if the labels differ.
  2. Open the repository’s webhook settings. In GitHub, go to the target repository and select Settings > Webhooks > Add webhook. You need repository owner or admin access to create a repository webhook. GitHub’s webhook creation guide explains the settings.
  3. Configure the destination. Paste the Discord URL into Payload URL and append /github to the end. For example, if the copied URL ends in /webhooks/123/abc, the payload URL should end in /webhooks/123/abc/github. Choose application/json as the content type. Discord specifies the /github suffix for this integration.
  4. Choose the event. Select Just the push event (or the equivalent push-event option shown) to receive push notifications. Leave other events unselected unless you specifically want them; GitHub recommends subscribing only to the events you need.
  5. Save the webhook. GitHub sends a ping event after creation to indicate that the configuration was set up. That ping is a setup confirmation; it does not by itself establish that every later Discord message will render as you expect.

Keep the webhook scoped and secure

  • Protect the URL. Treat the Discord webhook URL as sensitive: it is the destination used to post messages to the selected channel. Do not publish it in source code or share it where unauthorized people could use it.
  • Subscribe only to what you need. For push alerts, select the push event rather than a broad set of unrelated events. This keeps the channel focused and avoids unnecessary deliveries.
  • Understand the scope. This is a repository webhook for repository push events, not a setting for an individual user’s personal GitHub notification feed. GitHub webhooks can also be attached to organizations or apps, but this procedure concerns a repository.

What happens if a delivery fails?

GitHub does not automatically redeliver failed webhook deliveries. If an expected update is missing, inspect the webhook’s recent deliveries in GitHub and identify the failed delivery; a failed event may need manual recovery. A successful creation ping does not guarantee that all subsequent deliveries succeed. GitHub’s webhook usage documentation covers deliveries and troubleshooting.
