GitHub Copilot can be a dependable autocomplete partner without being a dependable security reviewer. The title’s ten-month reliability claim is a personal experience, not something public documentation or the studies cited here can independently verify. For readers, the useful distinction is what Copilot can speed up, what still needs human validation, and what the available security evidence does—and does not—show.
What “reliable autocomplete” means—and what it doesn’t
Copilot inline suggestions work like autocomplete inside an editor: they can finish a line, propose a code block, or suggest edits to existing code, including additions, changes, and deletions. GitHub says suggestions draw on surrounding code and context such as open editor tabs. The developer chooses whether to accept, dismiss, or ignore each suggestion; they are not automatically applied. GitHub’s inline-suggestions documentation describes the feature and its limits.

That can make Copilot feel reliable for repetitive or familiar work, but “reliable” needs a defined measure. A personal ten-month account is most useful when it identifies the author’s IDE and languages, gives representative examples of accepted and rejected suggestions, and explains whether reliability means fewer keystrokes, useful first drafts, or code that passes tests. There is no evidence here establishing a general accuracy rate for current completions or verifying any particular author’s experience.

Trust it as a draft, not as an authority. GitHub warns that suggestion quality varies with the amount and diversity of training data for a language, and that suggestions may miss larger design or architectural issues. Its documentation states: “While inline suggestions can generate syntactically correct code, it may not always be secure.” GitHub advises reviewing and validating suggestions for accuracy and appropriateness.

In practical terms, read the generated code, check that it matches the intended behavior and surrounding design, and run relevant tests before relying on it. A suggestion that compiles or passes a narrow test can still have unsafe input handling, authorization logic, or other flaws that require security-aware review.
What security studies say about generated code
A 2024 empirical study by Fu, Liang, Tahir, Li, Shahin, Yu, and Chen examined 452 Copilot-generated snippets from GitHub projects. The authors reported security weaknesses in 91 of 277 sampled Python snippets (32.8%) and 43 of 175 sampled JavaScript snippets (24.6%; the abstract rounds this to 24.5%). Across the sample, they identified 134 snippets with weaknesses and 544 security issues spanning 38 CWE categories. The paper, published in ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology in April 2024, reports results from its selected sample and method—not the proportion of all Copilot output that is insecure, and not a measurement of today’s product.

A separate 2025 preprint by Amena Amro and Manar H. Alalfi evaluated Copilot Code Review against curated vulnerable code samples from different projects, languages, and domains. Its abstract reports frequent misses of critical issues such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting, while feedback often focused on lower-severity style or typo concerns. The detailed examples include test projects receiving few or no relevant comments. The evaluation was submitted to arXiv on September 17, 2025; it is evidence about those curated cases, not a universal benchmark of every version, repository, or Copilot security feature.

Can Copilot Code Review catch vulnerabilities?
It may provide useful feedback, but the cited evaluation does not support using it as the only security control. GitHub’s own Copilot Chat guidance also tells users to review and test generated code for errors and security concerns. Treat AI review as an additional signal: investigate its findings, and do not treat silence as proof that code is safe.

A sound review process combines human inspection with tests and security tooling appropriate to the project. These controls address different failure modes; none turns an unexamined suggestion into verified code.
Does GitHub use Copilot prompts or code for model training?
In a GitHub Blog post dated March 25, 2026, Mario Rodriguez announced that, starting April 24, 2026, GitHub would use interaction data—including inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context—from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users to train and improve models unless those users opted out. The announcement says this change does not affect Business and Enterprise users. Read GitHub’s announcement. GitHub’s current product page says individual subscribers can opt out through Copilot settings; confirm the plan scope and setting in your account because product policies can change. For a separate privacy consideration, GitHub says that when Bring Your Own Key is active, prompts and responses go to the selected model provider and may be subject to that provider’s data-retention and privacy policies. Check the terms and controls that apply to the provider and plan you actually use.
How to use Copilot without outsourcing judgment
- Use suggestions as proposals. Confirm each accepted completion or edit does what you intended, particularly when it changes existing code.
- Validate behavior. Run relevant tests and inspect edge cases rather than equating syntactic correctness with correctness.
- Review security-sensitive paths deliberately. Pay attention to input validation, authentication, authorization, data access, and output handling.
- Keep security controls independent. Use human review, testing, and suitable security tools; do not rely on generated code or AI review as the sole safeguard.
- Check data-use settings. Verify the current policy and opt-out controls for your Copilot plan and, if applicable, the selected model provider.
GitHub reports that public-code matching suggestions occur in fewer than 1% of cases, based on its own research, and describes a public-code filter and code-referencing feature. That figure is not a security rate and does not guarantee a suggestion is safe or clear of licensing concerns. GitHub’s product page describes those features.
