GitHub now gives repositories a dedicated Accessibility tab when they contain an ACCESSIBILITY.md file. Put the file in the repository root, .github/, or docs/; GitHub checks those locations in that order. The page makes a project’s accessibility approach and reporting route easier to find, but it does not prove the software conforms to WCAG or that every requirement has been tested.
What GitHub’s Accessibility tab does
GitHub’s October 1, 2026 changelog says an ACCESSIBILITY.md file in the repository root, .github/, or docs/ is highlighted on the repository overview. GitHub’s documentation specifies that it checks those locations in that order.
For a repository without its own page, GitHub Docs say it can inherit an accessibility statement from an organization-owned repository named .github. The feature helps visitors and contributors locate information about accessibility; it does not change the product’s interface or code.
GitHub announced availability on all plans on github.com. The announcement named GitHub Enterprise Server 3.24 as the planned self-hosted release; check the documentation or your instance’s release information to confirm whether a particular Enterprise Server installation has the feature.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to add an ACCESSIBILITY.md file
For a public repository, GitHub provides a Community Standards flow that can offer a starting point. You can also create the Markdown file yourself and add it through your usual repository workflow.
- Choose a location. Add
ACCESSIBILITY.mdat the repository root, in.github/, or indocs/. If more than one exists, GitHub’s documented lookup order is.github, the root, thendocs. - Use the Community Standards flow, if useful. In the public repository, open Insights → Community Standards → Additional community file → Accessibility. Follow the prompts to add or propose a statement.
- Or create the file manually. Write it in Markdown, save it at the chosen path, and commit it. When working from the default branch, GitHub recommends creating a pull request.
- Review the published page. Check the repository overview and Accessibility tab to confirm that the intended statement is visible and its links and contact routes work.
What to put in an ACCESSIBILITY.md file
Make the page useful to the person trying to use or contribute to the project. GitHub suggests covering the project’s priorities, supported environments, known barriers, contributor expectations, reporting route, ownership, and maintenance. W3C WAI’s accessibility statement guidance also recommends plain language, clear contact information, applicable standards, known limitations, measures taken, technical prerequisites, and tested environments where relevant.

Scope and ownership
Name the project or product covered and identify the team or role responsible for the statement. Say whether it covers a website, application, library documentation, or another part of the project so readers know what the information applies to.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApproach and work completed
Describe accessibility priorities and work that has actually been done. If the project has adopted a standard or target, name it and define its scope—for example, a target for a particular product or release. Do not imply a target has been adopted if it has not.

Known barriers and tested environments
List specific limitations in terms people can understand. For example, say that some videos do not have captions rather than only naming a WCAG success criterion. State which browsers, devices, assistive technologies, or other environments have been tested when that information is known; distinguish tested conditions from assumptions.
How to report an accessibility barrier
Provide a working, accessible contact or issue-reporting route and explain what information will help the team investigate. A reader should not have to guess where to report a barrier. If public issue reports could expose sensitive information, explain how to contact the maintainers privately.

Contributor expectations and maintenance
Explain relevant expectations for contributions, such as how to raise accessibility concerns during review. Identify who will maintain the page and how it will be updated as the project, testing, or known limitations change.
This outline combines GitHub’s project-oriented suggestions with W3C WAI’s user-facing guidance; it is a practical structure, not an official required template. Publish only claims and contact details that are accurate.

How an accessibility statement differs from a conformance report
These documents answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Document | What it tells readers | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Project commitment page | What the project prioritizes, knows, supports, and expects from contributors. | That the product meets a technical standard. |
| User-facing accessibility statement | How people can use the product, its known limitations, and how to report a problem. | That every requirement has been tested or passed. |
| Technical conformance report | Assessment results against a defined standard and scope. | Conformance beyond the specific scope and evidence described in the report. |
W3C WAI explains that an accessibility statement is not itself a technical assessment or declaration of conformity. It can refer to assessment results for added verification. GitHub separately collects Accessibility Conformance Reports based on the WCAG edition of VPAT version 2.5, defined by the Information Technology Industry Council; that is a distinct reporting artifact, not what an ACCESSIBILITY.md file automatically becomes.
What the file can—and cannot—prove
Publishing the file is a documentation and accountability step. It can tell people what a team is doing, disclose known barriers, and provide a route to report problems. It does not show that the product is accessible, certify WCAG conformance, or demonstrate that all requirements were evaluated. Those conclusions require evidence appropriate to the product, standard, and scope.

W3C WAI notes that some jurisdictions or organizations may require particular statement content. Whether that applies depends on the project and jurisdiction; a repository statement alone should not be treated as a universal legal determination.
