GitFuse is a command-line tool described as a way to carry committed Git work from one trusted development machine to another before a branch is ready for a normal remote. Its basic handoff is gitfuse sync on the first machine and gitfuse pull on the second—without creating a temporary remote branch. The product details below reflect Iacon’s announcement published August 26, 2026, not independent testing.

What GitFuse is for

Iacon describes GitFuse’s goal as: “Move committed Git work between trusted machines without requiring a temporary remote branch.” That makes it a transport option for work already recorded in Git commits—for example, when you want to continue a local branch on another computer before publishing it to your usual remote.

The intended sequence is commit, sync, then pull on the other device. GitFuse is not presented as a replacement for Git hosting or as a general project-folder backup service. Read Iacon’s DEV Community announcement.

What it moves—and what it does not

GitFuse is described as moving committed Git state. The announcement explicitly excludes:

Commit changes you need before syncing. Files that are not part of committed Git state remain on the original machine. This boundary distinguishes GitFuse from folder synchronization tools such as Syncthing and Dropbox: the announcement does not claim GitFuse mirrors a complete working directory.

How the described handoff works

  1. On the source machine, authenticate and track the repository. The fuller example in the announcement uses gitfuse auth login, followed by gitfuse add ..
  2. Commit the work in Git. GitFuse’s stated scope is committed state, not pending edits or untracked files.
  3. Send the committed state. Run gitfuse sync in the repository.
  4. On the destination machine, authenticate and retrieve it. The example uses gitfuse auth login, then gitfuse pull.

The announcement does not establish exact prompts, conflict behavior, branch-selection defaults, or the current command syntax in released versions. Check the current official documentation before relying on a command or workflow: GitFuse and the GitFuse GitHub repository.

Devices, controls, and other reported features

The announcement describes an account and trusted-device model: a new CLI device is authorized, and connected devices can later be reviewed or revoked. It also lists repository tracking, dry runs, commit selection, status, sync history, restore and recovery workflows, diagnostics, headless authentication, and updates. The dashboard is described as covering repositories, trusted devices, sync history, usage, account settings, and upgrade plans; the CLI is the main interaction point.

These are features reported by the author, not independently verified behavior. The announcement does not establish implementation-level security details such as encryption design, key handling, or server-side access controls. If those details determine whether you can use it for sensitive code, verify them in current official documentation before syncing.

Installation and license reported in the announcement

Iacon’s post lists these installation routes and identifies the CLI as written in Go and licensed under AGPL-3.0:

  • macOS or Linux: curl -fsSL https://gitfuse.dev/install.sh | sh
  • Homebrew: the VectorSolus/gitfuse tap
  • Windows: winget install gitfuse
  • Prebuilt binaries: GitHub Releases

Because release availability and the supported platform matrix can change, confirm the current commands and downloads on the GitFuse site or GitHub repository before installing.

How GitFuse compares with other handoff methods

Iacon names temporary or private branches, git bundle, SSH/SCP, Syncthing, and a separate private Git remote as valid alternatives. The practical difference is whether you want a Git-aware handoff or prefer tools and infrastructure you already use.

Method Central remote involved? What it moves Setup and cleanup
GitFuse, as described by Iacon Uses the GitFuse service; avoids a temporary branch on your normal remote. Committed Git state; not working-tree edits or arbitrary files. CLI account/device authorization and repository tracking; no temporary branch to clean up.
Temporary or private Git branch Yes, a Git remote. Commits pushed to that branch. Push and fetch through familiar Git workflows; remove the branch when it is no longer needed.
git bundle No hosting remote is required for the transfer itself. Git repository history and refs included in the bundle. Create, transfer, and import a bundle; the handoff is more manual.
SSH/SCP No Git hosting remote is required, but the machines need a reachable transfer path. Files you choose to copy; Git state may be among them. Requires access and a deliberate choice of what to copy.
Syncthing No conventional Git remote is required. Files in configured folders, rather than only committed Git state. Configure folder synchronization and connected devices; care is needed around simultaneous edits and repository working files.
Another private Git remote Yes, the separate remote. Git commits pushed to that remote. Set up and maintain another remote and its access controls.

These approaches are not inherently wrong or unsafe; they trade off infrastructure, control, and convenience. GitFuse’s stated distinction is the short commit → sync → continue-elsewhere path without a transport-only branch on your normal remote. Choose based on the data you need to transfer, the access model you trust, and whether another service or remote fits your workflow. Iacon’s announcement names the alternatives.

Availability and what to verify

In the August 26, 2026 announcement, Iacon said the free version was live and that Pro and Team plans were coming later.
