A good Git commit message lets someone scanning the history see what changed, then understand why the change was needed. Keep the subject concise; use the body for the reasoning and context that do not fit in one line. Git’s conventions are guidance, not universal law, so check the repository’s contribution instructions before adopting a format.
What makes a Git commit message useful?
A useful message gives future readers two things: a quick description of the change and enough context to understand the decision behind it. As the Git project’s contributor documentation puts it, “The goal of your log message is to convey the why behind your change to help future developers.”
A subject such as Handle empty config files identifies the change. The body can explain why empty files occur and what behavior the change preserves. That is more useful than a subject that merely says Fix bug, or a body that recounts the author’s sequence of actions.
How should you structure the message?
Write a short subject line
The Git git-commit documentation recommends a short opening line of no more than 50 characters, followed by a blank line and a fuller explanation. It describes this as a good idea, not a mandatory rule for every repository. Treat the limit as a useful constraint: name the change clearly and leave supporting details for the body.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the body for the reason and relevant context
After the subject, leave a blank line before the body. Explain why the change was made, along with constraints or non-obvious decisions that a future maintainer may need to know. Keep the focus on the change and its rationale rather than a diary of what you did.
Example
Handle empty config files
Treat an empty file as an unset configuration so installations
created before the setting existed can still start.
The subject states what changed; the body explains the compatibility reason. The example illustrates the structure, not a requirement to use these exact words or line lengths.

Should the subject use imperative mood or punctuation?
For Git project contributions, the Git SubmittingPatches documentation advises using imperative mood and omitting a final period. For example, Handle empty config files reads as an instruction, while Handled empty config files. does not follow that convention.

These are conventions for that contribution context, not a universal Git rule. A repository may specify a different style, including prefixes or other formatting. Read its contribution guide first, and follow the project’s stated requirements when submitting there.

How do Git and Linux kernel guidance differ?
The two references serve different purposes. Git’s commit manual gives general advice about the shape of a message; its contributor documentation discusses conventions for submitting changes. The Linux kernel’s patch-submission documentation reflects a distinct project environment. These sources are not evidence of one style shared by every Git project.
| Guidance | Subject length | Mood and punctuation | Body and context | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Git commit manual | Recommends an opening line of no more than 50 characters. | The cited passage focuses on message structure, not a universal punctuation rule. | Put a blank line after the subject, then give a fuller explanation. | Advisory good practice in the Git manual. |
| Git contributor guidance | No character limit is specified in the cited guidance. | Advises imperative mood and no final period in the subject. | Explain why the change matters so future developers can understand it. | Guidance for Git project contributions; check the target repository’s rules. |
| Linux kernel patch guidance | Not stated in the cited page. | Follow the kernel project’s own patch conventions rather than assuming Git’s general advice settles them. | Use the project’s submission instructions for the context expected in a patch. | Project-specific guidance, not a universal rule for Git repositories. |
What should you check before committing?
- Check the repository’s contribution guide. Project instructions take precedence over applying a general convention mechanically.
- Make the subject specific. Avoid vague filler such as
Fix things; name the change. - Keep the rationale out of an overloaded subject. Put important reasons and constraints in the body.
- Ask whether a future reader can understand the decision. If not, add the missing context rather than a play-by-play of your work.
The 50-character recommendation and the imperative, no-period convention come from separate Git documents and have different scopes. Neither establishes a universal format or an empirical rule about message quality. Use them as practical guidance, then follow the conventions of the project whose history you are writing.
