A GIS technology stack is the set of connected tools and standards that collect, store, analyze, publish, and display geographic information. It is not one application: a typical system combines spatial data, storage, analysis software, network services, client apps, and interoperability standards.

What does a GIS technology stack include?

Think of GIS as a series of cooperating layers. Data describes places and phenomena; storage organizes it; analysis tools transform it; services make it available over a network; and client applications let people view, edit, and use it. Standards help components built by different vendors or communities exchange information.

These layers can be combined in different ways. A desktop GIS might read local files directly, while a larger or web-focused deployment may add a shared spatial database and a GIS server. No single product has to perform every job. QGIS documentation offers a concrete open-source example of how some components fit together, but it does not represent every commercial or open-source GIS architecture.

What kinds of data does GIS use?

Vector and raster data

Vector data represents geographic features such as points, lines, and polygons. Raster data represents information as a grid of cells, as in an image or continuous surface. A GIS may combine both, along with descriptive attribute data, to answer questions about locations and patterns.

Files, databases, and services

Data can be stored in files, spatial databases, or network services. QGIS documentation lists vector formats such as GeoPackage and Shapefile, and raster formats such as GeoTIFF and MBTiles. It also documents connections to PostgreSQL, SQLite/SpatiaLite, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, SAP HANA, and MySQL.

Those examples are not a guarantee that every installation can read every format or connect to every database. Available support can depend on the software build and its installed libraries. For a deployment, check the documentation for the specific GIS application and version you plan to use.

Where is spatial data stored and queried?

A spatial database gives a team a managed place to keep datasets and run spatial queries, rather than treating every dataset as an isolated file. PostgreSQL and SQLite/SpatiaLite are among the database sources documented for QGIS. Choosing a database is an architectural decision, not a universal ranking: consider the required collaboration and concurrency, data-management practices, deployment, licensing, staff skills, and interoperability needs.

Not every GIS needs a separate database. A person working with a small project may use files, while a system serving multiple people or applications may benefit from shared storage. The right arrangement depends on how data is maintained and used.

What software performs GIS analysis?

Desktop GIS

A desktop GIS connects to files, databases, and online services. It can be used to visualize and edit layers, run analysis, and create maps. QGIS documents native vector and raster analysis as well as processing integrations with GDAL, SAGA, GRASS, OTB, and R. These are examples from the QGIS ecosystem, not a complete list of GIS tools.

Processing libraries and tools

Analysis may happen inside the desktop application or through integrated libraries and other software. The desktop client can provide a common interface to those capabilities, but the actual tools available depend on the application, installation, and configuration. If a workflow depends on a particular algorithm or integration, verify that it is present in the target environment.

How do GIS servers and APIs deliver information?

A GIS server makes data, rendered maps, or processing capabilities available to other software over a network. In the QGIS example, QGIS Server uses QGIS for GIS logic and map rendering, and its documentation lists support for WMS, WFS, OGC API – Features, and WCS. QGIS documentation also identifies UMN MapServer and GeoServer as server options.

These interfaces have different purposes; a client and server need compatible implementations and configuration to work together.

Interface What it provides Typical role
WMS Rendered map images Display a map layer in a client without requiring it to receive the underlying features.
WFS Feature-level access, including query and transaction operations Work with geographic features rather than only a rendered image.
OGC API – Features Feature access through a modern web API An API-oriented option for providing and working with features.
WCS Coverage data Publish coverage data through a network service.
WPS Standardized requests and responses for geospatial processing Make processing operations available through a service interface.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) describes WFS as a reliable way to provide geospatial data to the web, while encouraging implementers to consider OGC API – Features for its capabilities in a more modern web API. That is guidance to consider the newer standard, not a statement that WFS is obsolete or unsupported.

What applications do people use to access GIS?

GIS clients include desktop software, browser-based applications, and mobile applications. A client connects people to data and services; the server and storage layers may be remote, local, or a mix depending on the system.

Web GIS adds browser technologies and network delivery to the GIS stack. An Esri Press sample for the fifth edition of Get Started with Web GIS describes technologies including HTTP, HTML, URLs, JavaScript, WebGL, and WebSocket. That is a publisher-authored, Esri-oriented description rather than a universal specification for every web GIS.

How do the layers work together?

Consider a team maintaining geographic features in shared storage and making them available to a browser map. The desktop GIS can connect to the data source for editing and analysis; a GIS server can publish the resulting information through an appropriate service; and a browser client can request and display it. Standards define common interfaces for parts of that exchange.

  1. Acquire or create data: collect geographic information and choose suitable vector or raster formats.
  2. Store and manage it: keep the data in files, a spatial database, or another supported source, according to the project’s collaboration and management needs.
  3. Analyze and prepare it: use desktop GIS tools and any required processing integrations.
  4. Publish it: configure a server or service interface that fits the information being delivered, such as map imagery or feature access.
  5. Use it in a client: connect desktop, browser, or mobile applications to the published service or data source.

This is one possible pattern, not a required sequence for every GIS. A project that uses local files and desktop tools may not need a server, while a shared web application may rely on several network-facing components.

How should you choose a GIS architecture?

Start with the work the system must support, then select components that meet those needs. Compare approaches using these questions:

  • Data: Who owns and maintains it, and which formats must remain usable?
  • Editing and collaboration: How many people or applications need to update the same information?
  • Interoperability: Which service interfaces and APIs must clients support?
  • Workload: What spatial queries and processing tasks are required?
  • Users and access: Will people work from desktop, browser, mobile, or field environments? Is offline use needed?
  • Operations: What deployment, security, and maintenance capacity is available?
  • Cost and licensing: Which licensing terms and ongoing costs fit the organization?

Open-source, commercial, cloud-hosted, and hybrid approaches can all combine these layers differently. The interfaces and components vary, but there is no universal vendor ranking or performance winner established by the standards and product documentation discussed here. Compatibility also depends on software versions, configuration, and individual implementations.
