CHOICE lists GIO Platinum (strata owners) as contents insurance for strata owners, summarizing it as sum-insured cover with accidental damage. That public listing is not enough to establish the full terms, price, or an independent overall score. The key distinction is that this is a contents-policy listing—not proof of what an owners corporation’s building policy covers. Check your certificate and the policy disclosure statement (PDS) that applies to your policy before relying on any cover detail.
What does GIO Platinum cover for strata owners?
CHOICE classifies GIO Platinum (strata owners) as contents insurance for strata owners and describes it publicly as a sum-insured policy with accidental damage cover. CHOICE says the product is very similar to the equivalent Suncorp policy, with minor cover differences. Its detailed scores and some feature information are restricted to members, so the public listing does not support a complete feature-by-feature review or price comparison.
“Sum insured” means the policy has a stated maximum amount of cover for the insured contents. The listing summary does not establish the detailed definitions, limits, exclusions, or claim-settlement terms that apply to a particular policy. Use the actual policy wording and certificate to determine what is covered and how much can be claimed.

An apartment owner may need personal contents insurance for belongings, while the owners corporation or body corporate generally arranges strata insurance for the building and common property. Those are different covers and can be held by different parties. GIO explains the distinction in its guide to insurance for apartments.

GIO’s current policy-document library names its building product “Strata Insurance”; it does not identify a current strata building policy called “Platinum.” The documents available publicly do not establish that CHOICE’s GIO Platinum contents listing and GIO’s current Strata Insurance policy are the same contract. Do not use the strata building PDS to infer the terms of a personal contents policy unless your own policy documents confirm that they apply.
What GIO’s current Strata Insurance documents say
The following details describe GIO’s current strata building policy, not confirmed terms for the CHOICE-listed GIO Platinum contents product. GIO says its current Strata Insurance policy documents apply to new policies and renewals starting on or after 24 May 2025. The linked PDS is dated 31 January 2025. Check the start date on your policy and the documents supplied with it.

Insured property and events
The current GIO Strata Insurance PDS describes cover for loss or damage to the strata building, including common property, with optional cover for common contents. The relevant sums insured are shown on the certificate and remain subject to the policy wording.
The PDS summary identifies storms, floods, fire—including bushfire—and accidental damage among covered events. Cover is subject to the PDS’s terms, limits, and exclusions; it is not blanket protection for every cause of damage. Wear, tear, and deterioration are excluded.

Legal liability limit
For GIO’s current Strata Insurance, the PDS states that the most payable for legal liability claims is $20 million for all claims arising from one incident and in total during the period of insurance, including associated legal costs. This is a limit for that strata policy, not a stated benefit of the GIO Platinum personal contents listing.
Excesses
GIO’s Strata Insurance Additional Information Guide gives standard excess options from $1,000 to $7,500. For covered loss involving escaping or overflowing water, a $200 water-damage excess applies in addition to other excesses unless the policy says otherwise. Additional excesses may depend on factors such as claims history, location, and building type; check the certificate for the amounts applying to the specific policy.

How to check whether the policy fits your situation
- Identify the policy and insured party. Check the certificate and PDS for the exact product name, insurer, policyholder, and whether the insured property is your personal contents, the strata building, or common contents.
- Match the applicable wording. Confirm the policy’s start or renewal date and use the PDS and other documents issued for that period. GIO’s current Strata Insurance wording should not be treated as GIO Platinum contents wording without confirmation in your own documents.
- Check limits and exclusions. For personal contents, review the sum insured, any item limits or sublimits, covered events, exclusions, and claim-settlement basis in the relevant policy documents. For strata cover, check the certificate’s building and common-contents sums insured and the PDS terms.
- Read the excess details. Establish which standard and additional excesses apply to the particular claim type and whether more than one excess can apply. Use the certificate and applicable policy wording rather than assuming the current strata figures apply to a contents policy.
- Compare like with like. When comparing policies or premiums, use the same location, risk details, cover period, insured property, sums insured, excess choices, and policy versions. A price comparison without those matches may not compare equivalent cover.
What affects the price of GIO Strata Insurance?
GIO’s Additional Information Guide lists these factors for its current Strata Insurance premiums:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Building address and occupancy
- Sum insured
- Previous insurance history
- Construction and other building characteristics
- Selected standard excess
- Whether common-contents cover is included
- Payment by instalments
- Applicable taxes or charges
GIO says premiums can change at renewal even when circumstances have not changed. These are factors for the current strata building policy; they do not establish the price or rating factors for the GIO Platinum contents listing.

Verdict
GIO Platinum (strata owners) is publicly described by CHOICE as sum-insured contents insurance with accidental damage cover, but the public summary does not establish enough detail to judge its full terms or value. Treat the product identity and the applicable PDS as the deciding checks: your owners corporation’s strata building policy is separate, and GIO’s current Strata Insurance documents do not by themselves verify the terms of a personal contents policy. GIO’s Home and Contents Insurance page also distinguishes home cover from strata cover.
