GIO Classic Extras is a home and contents insurance option with separate versions for homeowners, renters and strata owners. Its main building-cover distinction is an included safety net that may contribute up to a further 25% of the home sum insured for one incident in qualifying circumstances. That is not an unconditional cash bonus, and it does not replace choosing a realistic sum insured.
What is GIO Classic Extras?
Classic Extras is a tier of GIO home and contents insurance. The homeowner version is a sum-insured policy: you nominate the amounts insured for the building and contents. GIO also has distinct renters and strata-owner variants, so a feature described for building cover should not be assumed to apply to a renter’s contents-only cover.
CHOICE describes the homeowner policy as “A sum insured policy with a 25% underinsurance safety net for your building.” The safety net is a potential additional contribution after a qualifying claim, subject to the policy’s settlement basis, conditions and exclusions.
What does the homeowner policy cover?
Building safety net
GIO says Classic Extras automatically includes safety net home protection. For one incident, it can contribute up to a further 25% of the home sum insured when the claim is settled on the relevant basis and the policy conditions are met. The maximum is not guaranteed: eligibility and the amount payable depend on the wording and circumstances of the claim. GIO’s FAQ explains the safety-net benefit.

Because this is a sum-insured policy, estimate rebuilding costs carefully rather than treating the safety net as a substitute for adequate cover. Check how the policy defines the relevant settlement basis, what conditions apply and which exclusions affect a claim in the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Other features and optional cover
GIO’s home insurance overview identifies accidental damage and motor burnout as included in Classic Extras. It lists excess-free glass cover and GIO Home Assist as optional covers; optional cover may add cost and is subject to its own terms, limits and exclusions. Liability and selected limits
CHOICE reports legal liability cover up to $20 million for named insured people and resident family members for incidents in Australia and New Zealand. This is a reported policy limit, not a guarantee that every liability claim is covered. CHOICE also describes caps and conditions for benefits such as temporary accommodation and some contents categories, including portable contents, jewellery, art, collections and spoilage. The applicable limits depend on the policy variant and cover selected.
How do the renters and strata versions differ?
GIO’s Classic Extras label appears on separate homeowner, renters and strata-owner review pages. Those are distinct policy variants, not interchangeable descriptions of one set of benefits.

Renters
The renters review describes contents cover, optional listed valuables and portable contents, and reports legal liability up to $20 million. It also notes an additional excess if the home is unoccupied for more than 60 consecutive days. Check the renters PDS for the current wording, applicable excesses, sublimits and exclusions; do not assume the homeowner building safety net applies to a contents-only policy. Strata owners
Strata owners have a separate Classic Extras variant. The available review material establishes that it is distinct, but does not provide enough detail here to describe its benefits or limits. Check the strata-specific PDS and schedule rather than transferring features from the homeowner or renters descriptions. CHOICE’s strata-owner review covers that variant.

How does Classic Extras compare with GIO Classic and Platinum?
GIO’s FAQ says the building safety net can add up to a further 25% for Classic Extras and up to 30% for Platinum; the benefit is optional for Classic. These are maximum potential contributions described for building cover, subject to the official policy terms, not universal claim outcomes.

- Use the same address, building and contents sums insured, and household details when comparing quotes.
- Compare insured events and exclusions, not just the policy tier or headline benefit.
- Check excesses, including any additional excess that could apply in your circumstances.
- Review how any safety net or equivalent underinsurance benefit is calculated and settled.
- Compare limits for temporary accommodation and debris removal, plus requirements for portable valuables and specified items.
- Check the legal liability limit and the cost and terms of optional cover.
