GIMP can replace Photoshop for many everyday image-editing jobs, but it is not a universal substitute. If you want the broadest desktop photo-editing feature set in this comparison, Affinity by Canva is the strongest fit on its published features. Photopea is a practical browser-based choice when PSD access is central. None is guaranteed to preserve every Photoshop file or workflow exactly, so test your own projects before switching.
Which editor should you choose?
The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on what you need to open, edit, and deliver. This comparison uses the products’ current official descriptions; it is not a claim of hands-on testing or exact Photoshop parity.

When GIMP is enough
GIMP is a capable free, open-source editor for GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows, and other systems. The project describes uses including image manipulation, original artwork, graphic design, color management, scripting, and third-party plug-ins. If your work is mainly retouching, compositing, or creating images and does not depend on a particular Photoshop feature or handoff, it may cover what you need.

Why Affinity is the broad desktop alternative here
Affinity by Canva’s official photo-editing page lists non-destructive editing, RAW development, retouching, HDR and focus stacking, macros, batch work, unlimited layers, and PSD import. That breadth makes it the best fit in this comparison for someone who wants a general desktop photo-editing toolkit rather than only a browser-based PSD editor.
Affinity currently describes its individual app as free and says a Canva account is required. Its page says Canva premium is needed for Canva AI features; that is separate from the listed photo-editing capabilities. Availability and account terms can change, so check the current Affinity photo-editing page and Affinity homepage before signing up.

PSD import is useful, but not a fidelity guarantee
Affinity says it imports layered PSDs and retains masks, groups, and adjustments in most cases. Its FAQ also warns that smart objects and advanced filters may flatten. If a project relies on those elements, inspect the imported file before editing and confirm that the result can be delivered as required.

When Photopea makes more sense
Photopea runs in a browser and describes its editing as taking place locally on the device, without uploading files. It advertises PSD opening and saving, layers, masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels, paths, and multiple camera RAW formats. Those are Photopea’s own product claims; a layered file’s exact appearance and editability can still depend on its contents.

Choose it when opening or saving a PSD quickly in a browser matters more than having a desktop application. The product page is at photopea.com. Before relying on it for client handoff or a complex project, test the actual file and the export format you need.
What Photoshop still offers
Photoshop remains the relevant choice when your workflow depends on its specific features, file behavior, or integration with Adobe’s ecosystem. Adobe’s US product page describes adjustment layers, masks, generative features, and desktop, web, and mobile access. It listed Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly on the page reviewed for this article; this is a US price snapshot, not a global quote, and plans and prices can change. Test your workflow before switching
- Open a representative project. Use a real layered PSD that includes the elements you rely on, such as masks, text, adjustment layers, smart objects, or advanced filters.
- Inspect what survived import. Check layer structure, visibility, masks, effects, and text rather than assuming the canvas alone tells the whole story.
- Repeat a routine task. Perform a typical retouch or composite and confirm that the editor has the tools and controls you need.
- Export the actual deliverable. Save or export to the format required by your client, printer, website, or next application, then reopen or inspect that output.
- Check account and platform requirements. Confirm the current access terms and make sure the editor runs where you need it.
If the file opens correctly but a key layer or effect becomes flattened, or the final export fails your handoff requirements, that is a workflow mismatch—not proof that the editor is generally incapable. Keep Photoshop for that task or choose an alternative whose tested behavior meets the requirement.
