A gigabit plan describes a service tier or maximum wired capability; it does not mean every device, Wi-Fi connection, speed test, or app will show 1,000 Mbps. To find out where speed is being lost, test a capable computer over Ethernet, check every link in the wired path, reduce other network traffic, and repeat the test. If wired results remain unexpectedly low after those checks, ask your internet provider to investigate.

What “gigabit” means—and what a speed test measures

“Gigabit” usually refers to a plan’s advertised tier or to a network link rated for up to 1 gigabit per second (1,000 Mbps). It is not a guarantee that every device or application will receive that speed. The result depends on the full path between the provider and the test server, including your home connection, router, cables or Wi-Fi, client device, and the test endpoint.

GFiber says its upload and download claims are based on maximum wired speeds. It also cautions that actual internet and Wi-Fi speeds and coverage can vary with home or business size and layout, construction materials, hardware and software limitations, latency, and packet loss. Its help page states: “Actual internet, Wi-Fi speeds, and Wi-Fi coverage are not guaranteed and can vary based on factors such as home or business size and layout, construction materials, hardware and software limitations, latency, packet loss, etc.” GFiber’s service documentation describes those conditions.

A speed test is a snapshot of a particular connection to a particular server at a particular time. A phone on Wi-Fi measures a different path from a computer connected by Ethernet. Neither one result nor a single low reading, by itself, establishes that your provider is failing to deliver the service.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Start with a wired test

Use a computer with an Ethernet connection capable of the speed you are checking. Connect it to a router LAN port that supports the plan’s speed, then run a reputable speed test. If available, compare a router-side test with the computer’s result: the former measures the router’s internet-facing connection, while the latter also includes the router-to-device link and the computer’s capabilities.

Do not use a phone’s Wi-Fi result as your only test of a gigabit plan. A wireless result can be substantially below the plan speed even when the provider-facing connection is working as expected.

Check every part of the wired chain

The slowest component can limit the connection. Check the ratings and condition of the equipment between your computer and the provider connection:

  • Router or modem-router ports: Verify that the WAN port and the LAN port in use support the target speed. A gigabit-rated LAN port cannot pass a multi-gig service at full speed.
  • Intermediate switch: If the connection passes through a switch, check its port ratings too.
  • Computer Ethernet: Confirm the built-in network interface supports the speed you expect.
  • Adapters and USB connection: If you use a USB Ethernet adapter, both the adapter and the computer’s USB connection must support the target speed.
  • Cable: Check its rating and physical condition. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cables for speeds above 100 Mbps on Nest Wifi and Google Wifi. For multi-gig service, follow the requirements for your specific router, adapter, and provider; a Cat 6 cable alone does not guarantee 2 Gbps.

For multi-gig plans, every relevant port, adapter, device, and cable must be able to handle the intended rate. Google Fiber’s 2 Gig guidance emphasizes matching those components. It also gives a product-specific example: with the Wi-Fi 6 Router and GFiber Mesh Extender included with its 2 Gig plan, wireless speeds can reach up to 700 Mbps. That figure applies to that stated provider and equipment configuration, not to all Wi-Fi 6 routers or homes. Google Fiber’s 2 Gig guidance provides the example.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Reduce competing traffic and repeat the test

Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and other high-bandwidth activity before testing. Other active devices can use available bandwidth, and different routes or test servers can produce different readings. Run several tests against the same reputable endpoint under similar conditions instead of drawing a conclusion from one result.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance lists concurrent network traffic and provider-side conditions among possible causes of a slow result. Google’s Nest Wifi and Google Wifi troubleshooting guide also explains that a slow component in the connection path can constrain the overall speed.

If Wi-Fi is slower than Ethernet

If the wired test is stronger, the limiting segment may be your wireless connection. Wi-Fi speed depends on the client device, distance from the router, walls and other obstacles, frequency band, interference, router and mesh placement, and the number of devices using the network.

  • Test close to the router, then compare with a test from the location where you normally use the device.
  • Place the router in an open, central location where practical, and reduce barriers between it and the client.
  • Check the Wi-Fi capabilities of both the router and the client; a newer router cannot give an older device capabilities it does not have.
  • If you use mesh Wi-Fi, check node placement and the connection between nodes, or backhaul. A mesh node may help with coverage, but it will not fix a slow provider connection, an inadequate router port, or a client-device limitation.

Consider replacing or adding equipment only when the tests point to a specific limitation. If the router’s port rating is the bottleneck, compare port capabilities and provider compatibility. If the issue is weak coverage, assess the layout and placement before considering mesh equipment. A new router is not a general fix for a low result on the provider-facing connection.

When to contact your internet provider

Contact your provider if a suitably capable wired device repeatedly records much less than expected after you have checked the wired path and paused competing traffic. Ask it to verify your service tier, check for an outage, confirm provisioning, and investigate any known local network issue. Temporary provider work or other network conditions may affect results, as Google’s troubleshooting guidance notes.

There is no universal speed-test number in the available guidance that proves an individual gigabit service is deficient. Share several wired results, the test times, and the equipment and connection path you used so the provider can assess the issue. Do not infer throttling or a service breach from a single test.
