GIFT Nifty was indicating a largely flat start for India’s benchmark indices at about 22,642.5 around 8 a.m. on Thursday, 15 October 2026. That signal points to a muted opening for the Sensex and Nifty, despite heavy overnight losses in US and Asian markets.
The divergence does not mean global risk has disappeared. It reflects the limited role of an overnight futures quote: domestic orders, India’s sector mix, oil prices, currency moves and institutional flows can all change the cash-market opening after trading begins.
What the GIFT Nifty signal means
GIFT Nifty futures were mostly flat near 22,642.5 before the Indian cash market opened. The previous session ended with the Sensex at 72,781.89, down 251.89 points, or 0.34%, while the Nifty closed at 22,622.70, down 99.25 points, or 0.44%.

The futures level is an overnight sentiment indicator, not a guaranteed NSE opening level or a forecast for the entire trading session. It reflects available orders and global cues before regular Indian trading begins. Once the cash market opens, domestic buying and selling, sector weights and new information can produce a gap, a reversal or a larger move.

| Indicator | Reported level or move | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| GIFT Nifty, around 8 a.m., 15 October 2026 | 22,642.5, mostly flat | Suggests a muted initial response |
| Previous Sensex close | 72,781.89 | Down 251.89 points, or 0.34% |
| Previous Nifty close | 22,622.70 | Down 99.25 points, or 0.44% |
Why global markets fell
US inflation revived higher-for-longer rate fears
US consumer-price inflation rose 3.7% year over year in September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics figure reported by Moneycontrol. That was above August’s 3.4% reading and the 3.6% market expectation.
A hotter-than-expected inflation print can make investors reduce expectations for near-term Federal Reserve easing. It can also raise the possibility that rates remain elevated for longer, or that additional tightening is considered if inflation stays persistent. Neither outcome is automatic: the Fed will also assess employment, financial conditions and subsequent inflation data.

Higher discount rates generally put more pressure on technology and other growth stocks because a larger share of their expected cash flows lies further in the future. That sensitivity helps explain the sharper decline in US technology-heavy shares and the weakness in Asian markets with large semiconductor and technology exposures.
The selloff spread across major benchmarks
| Market or index | Reported move |
|---|---|
| MSCI Asia Pacific Index | Down 2.7% |
| South Korea’s Kospi | Down 7.6% |
| Nikkei futures | Down 4.8% |
| Hang Seng | Down 0.9% |
| Shanghai Composite | Down 1.2% |
| S&P 500 | Down 1.11% |
| Nasdaq Composite | Down 1.88% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Down 0.09% |
The 7.6% Kospi decline and 4.8% fall in Nikkei futures show that the pressure was especially intense in parts of Asia with significant technology and export exposure. For Indian investors, that is a warning sign for information-technology and other high-beta shares, but it does not determine the exact move in any individual stock.
Why India can open differently from Asia
Futures sentiment and cash-market orders are different signals
GIFT Nifty captures the overnight reaction before the NSE cash market is active. Indian mutual funds, insurers, pension funds, proprietary desks and retail investors can then place orders based on local earnings, valuations, technical levels and portfolio rebalancing. Those orders may absorb part of an overseas shock or amplify it.
India’s sector mix changes the transmission
The effect of US rates and an Asian technology selloff is not uniform across the Nifty and Sensex. Export-oriented technology companies can be sensitive to global growth expectations, overseas client spending and discount rates. Banks, energy companies, consumer shares and domestically focused businesses respond to different drivers. Index performance therefore depends on which sectors attract buying or selling after the opening bell.

Oil is a separate India-specific risk
Brent crude was reported at $104.94 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate at $93.91 after modest declines. Middle East supply disruptions kept the risk of prolonged high prices alive.
India imports most of the crude it consumes, so a sustained oil surge can increase the import bill, worsen imported inflation, pressure the rupee and squeeze margins for fuel-intensive companies. A single session’s modest oil decline does not remove that macro risk.

How institutional flows are affecting the setup
Foreign institutional investors sold about ₹1,857 crore of Indian equities in the previous session. Domestic institutions bought about ₹2,670 crore. Domestic buying was larger than foreign selling in that session, providing a potential cushion, but one day of flows cannot establish a lasting trend.
| Investor group | Previous-session activity | Possible market effect |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign institutional investors | Sold about ₹1,857 crore | Creates pressure, especially when global risk appetite is weak |
| Domestic institutions | Bought about ₹2,670 crore | Can absorb some selling and limit an opening decline |
What traders should watch after the opening bell
- Actual cash-market opening: Compare the NSE opening levels with the earlier GIFT Nifty indication. A flat futures quote can still be followed by a gap or reversal.
- US rate expectations: Watch Treasury yields and market pricing for the next Federal Reserve decisions. A further rise in yields would usually be more challenging for technology and other growth shares.
- Asian technology performance: Continued weakness in the Kospi, Nikkei-related technology shares or semiconductor stocks would keep pressure on Indian IT and other globally exposed sectors.
- Brent crude and the rupee: Rising oil alongside a weaker rupee would increase concern about imported inflation and corporate costs.
- FII and domestic flows: Check whether the previous session’s foreign selling and domestic buying patterns continue rather than treating one day’s figures as a trend.
Possible outcomes for the Sensex and Nifty
| Scenario | What could produce it | What it would mean |
|---|---|---|
| Muted or narrowly mixed open | Domestic institutional buying offsets overseas losses | Indices hold near the prior close while sectors diverge |
| Gap-down opening | Asian losses deepen, yields rise or oil jumps | Risk aversion broadens beyond technology stocks |
| Opening recovery | Local buyers absorb the initial shock and global futures stabilize | Early weakness fades, though volatility can remain high |
| Late-session deterioration | FII selling accelerates or rate and oil concerns intensify | A flat start proves unreliable as the session reprices risk |
Bottom line for investors
GIFT Nifty’s near-flat reading suggests that India may initially absorb the global rout better than the headline moves in US and Asian markets imply. The cushion is conditional, not a clean bill of health. Hotter US inflation has renewed higher-for-longer rate concerns, Asian technology shares have sold off sharply, crude remains above $100 a barrel for Brent, and foreign investors were net sellers in the prior session.
Use the futures quote to frame the opening, then reassess after cash-market orders, bond yields, oil, the rupee and institutional flows are visible. The pre-open indication cannot reliably predict the full day’s direction.
