GIFT Nifty signaled a mildly positive start for the Sensex and Nifty before trading on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, but the cue was modest and faced pressure from falling Asian markets, higher-than-expected inflation, elevated crude prices and Middle East supply concerns. Moneycontrol reported GIFT Nifty at 22,425 around 8 a.m. IST, up 55 points, or 0.25%. That was a pre-market indication—not the confirmed cash-market opening or the day’s eventual result.

What the pre-market signal showed

Moneycontrol’s October 13 pre-market report put GIFT Nifty at 22,425 around 8 a.m. IST, 55 points or 0.25% higher. The modest rise pointed to a potentially firmer start for Indian equities, but futures levels are directional cues. They do not establish where the cash indices will open or whether an early gain will last. Moneycontrol’s market coverage is the source for this time-specific figure.

Why the signals were mixed

The previous Indian session ended lower

At Monday’s October 12 close, the Sensex stood at 71,924.68, down 547.65 points (0.76%), while the Nifty closed at 22,363.35, down 157.10 points (0.70%), according to Moneycontrol. Those closing levels describe the previous session, not the October 13 outcome. The contrast between Monday’s losses and the small futures rise is why the pre-open cue should not be read as evidence of a sustained recovery.

Asian equities were under pressure

Moneycontrol reported early October 13 losses of more than 2% for MSCI’s broad Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan, 6% for South Korea’s Kospi and 2.6% for Japan’s Nikkei. These are regional market snapshots from early trading, not full-session results. They added a negative external backdrop to the mildly positive Indian futures signal.

Inflation and rates added a domestic concern

Moneycontrol cited September retail inflation at 5.54%, describing it as higher than expected and close to the 6% upper tolerance limit. India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation lists the September 2026 CPI release on October 12; the detailed rate is attributed here to Moneycontrol rather than independently confirmed against the official release table. MoSPI’s official website provides the release context.

Moneycontrol also said the Reserve Bank of India had raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% earlier in October and shifted to calibrated tightening. That policy description is reported by Moneycontrol; it is not independently verified here against an RBI policy release. Higher inflation and a tighter rate backdrop can weigh on expectations, but the available figures do not establish that either factor caused a particular index move.

Rank #2

Crude oil and Middle East risks remained in focus

In Asian trading on October 13, Moneycontrol reported Brent crude at $106.04 and WTI at $93.27 per barrel. It said oil had eased after rising in the previous session, while Middle East tensions and supply concerns remained in focus. These are volatile price snapshots, not settled prices for the day. Higher oil can be a concern for India’s market outlook, but the report does not quantify its effect on the indices.

How to read the outlook

The clearest interpretation is a mildly positive pre-open signal set against meaningful headwinds. GIFT Nifty was up only 0.25% around 8 a.m. IST, while the previous Indian session had closed lower and Asian markets were sharply down in early trading. Inflation, the reported tighter rate stance, elevated crude and supply uncertainty further clouded the picture. None of these indicators alone confirms how the Sensex or Nifty would perform during the October 13 session.
