Before you reimage a server for Ghost, confirm whether you need a full reinstall, then make and verify a complete backup away from the server. A fresh Ghost install does not restore your publication by itself: you must also restore content and assets, and handle Stripe-connected memberships in the right order.

Decide whether to update Ghost or reinstall it

A server rebuild does not automatically mean Ghost needs a full reinstall. First identify the installed Ghost version and the database used by the production site. Ghost’s update guide recommends a full reinstall for versions earlier than 3.0 and for production installations using SQLite; supported newer versions using MySQL have version-specific update paths. Ghost’s reinstall guide also identifies older 0.x, 1.x, and 2.x installations and production SQLite installations as candidates for a full reinstall.

Use the official guide for the installed version and database before choosing a procedure. Do not treat the version number alone as sufficient to select a migration path.

Back up the publication before replacing the server

Do not rely on an Admin content export as your only copy. Ghost’s ghost backup archive includes a JSON content export, a member CSV, installed themes, images and other media, and routing and redirect files. Keep the archive somewhere other than the server you are replacing, and check that it is readable before proceeding.

Ghost’s documented reinstall sequence calls for an initial backup and, where its upgrade path applies, updating to the latest minor version before taking a full backup. Follow the current reinstall guide for the exact sequence appropriate to your installation. If you need to assemble a manual backup, Ghost documents separate preservation steps for themes, uploaded images and files, routes, and member exports in its manual backup guide.

Check for live Stripe memberships

If the publication uses Stripe in live mode, do not improvise the member migration. Ghost’s reinstall guide instructs administrators to remove members with Stripe customer IDs from Ghost before disconnecting and to remove old webhooks as directed. Deleting those members from Ghost is not the same as cancelling their Stripe subscriptions. Reconnect the same Stripe account to the new Ghost installation before importing paid members, and follow Ghost’s current instructions for the account’s specific state.

Install Ghost on the replacement server

Ghost’s currently documented recommended self-hosting stack is Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, and systemd, with at least 1 GB of memory and a non-root user for Ghost commands. Ghost notes that other operating systems, databases, and web servers may work, but are not officially supported or widely adopted. These requirements can change, so check the live Ghost hosting guidance before provisioning.

On a production install, Ghost-CLI’s ghost install checks the environment, prepares the install directory, downloads Ghost, and starts setup. Setup configures items including MySQL, NGINX, SSL, database migration, and the low-privilege Ghost user. Use the Ghost-CLI documentation for the supported commands and prerequisites; do not run Ghost installation commands as root.

Secure the rebuilt host

Ghost recommends enabling HTTPS, securing MySQL, limiting firewall access, and disabling SSH root and password logins in favor of SSH keys. Its stated scaling approach is to add a CDN and caching layer; clustering or sharding is not supported. Treat these as operational requirements to plan for, not optional restoration steps.

Restore the backup to the fresh installation

Installing Ghost and restoring the publication are separate tasks. Ghost’s documented archive workflow extracts the backup into the new installation’s content folder, sets ownership, restarts Ghost, and imports the content JSON. For a live Stripe publication, reconnect the same Stripe account before importing paid members; then import the member CSV. Follow Ghost’s reinstall guide for the exact archive and import steps, as the order matters.

Choose between self-hosting and Ghost(Pro)

A rebuild is also a chance to decide who should operate the hosting. Ghost describes Ghost(Pro) as managed hosting, with setup, weekly updates, backups, security, and performance handled by Ghost. Self-hosting gives the operator more control, but requires ongoing server maintenance and arranging supporting services such as email delivery, analytics, and a CDN where needed. Ghost characterizes self-hosting as best for teams comfortable managing servers and wanting control over their environment.

Consideration Self-hosted Ghost Ghost(Pro)
Operating system and Ghost updates The operator maintains the server and Ghost installation. Ghost handles setup and weekly updates.
Backups and security The operator is responsible for arranging and managing them. Ghost handles backups and security.
Control and access More control over the hosting environment; server administration is required. Managed service intended for publishers who want to focus on the publication.
Additional services and cost The operator may need to procure email delivery, analytics, and CDN services; total cost depends on the chosen services. Ghost provides managed hosting; current plan pricing and terms should be checked on Ghost’s live hosting page.

Neither route is universally cheaper: compare the full cost of hosting and any supporting services with the managed option, along with the time and operational responsibility your team is willing to take on.
