Play Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT first if you want Jin Sakai’s complete character arc, access on either PS4 or PS5, and a package that already includes Iki Island and Legends. Play Ghost of Yōtei first if you want a newer, PS5-only samurai adventure with a different protagonist and a self-contained story.
The most important correction is in the title: Ghost of Yōtei is not downloadable content for Ghost of Tsushima. It is a full standalone game. Sucker Punch describes it as an evolution of the earlier game’s design and mythos, not a direct story sequel, so you do not need to finish Tsushima before starting it.

Ghost of Yōtei is a full game, not Tsushima DLC
Sony Interactive Entertainment launched Ghost of Yōtei worldwide for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. The game is set in rural Japan in the 1600s, approximately 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, and stars a new protagonist, Atsu. The time gap and new lead are important: Yōtei is not Jin Sakai’s next chapter.
Sucker Punch’s own FAQ makes the relationship explicit: “From a story perspective, Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, but it does represent an evolution of critically-acclaimed design and mythos of Sucker Punch’s 2020 hit.” In practical terms, that means the games share a broad samurai-adventure identity and a creative lineage, but Yōtei is designed to stand on its own.
#1 Best Overall
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
- The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
- Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
- Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
- A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.
Yōtei’s post-launch content can make the naming confusing. Sony announced Ghost of Yōtei Legends as free post-launch downloadable content, and the Complete Edition available by October 2026 includes that cooperative mode, the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion and the Most Wanted mode. Those are additions to Yōtei; the base game itself is not an expansion for Tsushima.

Which story should you play first?
Choose Tsushima first for Jin Sakai’s complete arc
Ghost of Tsushima launched in 2020 and follows Jin Sakai as he responds to the invasion of his home. The Director’s Cut gives you the base campaign and the Iki Island expansion in one package, so it is the natural choice if your priority is seeing the original protagonist’s journey in the order it was created.
Starting with Tsushima also lets you experience the foundation on which Yōtei builds: a large samurai adventure that combines direct katana combat, archery, stealth tactics and exploration. The Director’s Cut does not merely preserve the original campaign; it adds Iki Island and the Legends cooperative mode, making it the broadest way to sample the first game’s solo and online formats.
Choose Yōtei first for a self-contained adventure
Yōtei does not require knowledge of Jin, Tsushima’s historical events or the Iki Island expansion. Its protagonist is Atsu, its setting is a different part of Japan, and its story is separated from Tsushima by roughly three centuries. You can therefore begin with Yōtei without reading a plot summary or playing the earlier game.
This is the better opening if you own a PS5 and want the newer release, or if you prefer to approach the series through a fresh character rather than a continuation of an established one. Familiarity with Tsushima may help you recognize the design lineage, but it is not a comprehension requirement.
How the narratives connect—and how they do not
Shared identity, separate plots
The games belong to the same creative family, not to a single uninterrupted storyline. Sucker Punch calls Yōtei an evolution of Tsushima’s design and mythos. That wording signals continuity of ideas and tone without promising that characters, missions or plot threads carry over directly.

There is no evidence that Jin Sakai appears as Yōtei’s protagonist, and the official description identifies Atsu as the new lead. Treat references to a “sequel” cautiously: Yōtei follows Tsushima in release history and historical chronology, but it is not a direct narrative sequel.

Because Yōtei is set about 300 years after Tsushima, its historical setting is not an immediate continuation of Jin’s era. The gap gives the developers room to tell a separate story in 1600s rural Japan. You are not expected to remember Tsushima’s political factions, relationships or ending to understand Atsu’s situation.
Platforms, editions and what you receive
Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT
The Director’s Cut is available on both PS4 and PS5. On PS5, the official PlayStation listing specifies dynamic 4K resolution targeting 60fps, DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 3D Audio, Japanese voice-over lip-sync and the ability to transfer PS4 saves.
The purchase includes:
- The complete Ghost of Tsushima base campaign starring Jin Sakai.
- The Iki Island story expansion.
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends online cooperative play.
That combination matters for buyers comparing packages rather than only campaigns. You do not need a separate expansion purchase to obtain Iki Island, and Legends is part of the Director’s Cut package.
Ghost of Yōtei
Yōtei is a PS5-only title. The game launched as a standalone adventure starring Atsu, and the Complete Edition available by October 2026 bundles the main game with its announced post-launch content.

Sony announced Legends as free post-launch downloadable content. That timing distinction explains why early descriptions of Yōtei may list fewer included modes than the October 2026 Complete Edition.

Gameplay foundations and presentation
Tsushima’s documented play styles
The official game page describes several ways to approach Tsushima. You can fight with a katana, use a bow, rely on stealth tactics or explore the world and Iki Island. The game therefore supports players who want deliberate melee duels as well as those who prefer ranged attacks, infiltration or open-ended discovery.
On PS5, the Director’s Cut also has a clearly documented technical feature set: dynamic 4K resolution targeting 60fps, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, 3D Audio, Japanese voice-over lip-sync and PS4 save transfer. These are concrete reasons to choose the PS5 version if you already own the game on PS4 or want the listed console enhancements.
Yōtei’s newer PS5 focus
Yōtei is built exclusively for PS5, so there is no PS4 version to accommodate. Its appeal is the newer standalone production and its PS5-only presentation. The available official information identifies the protagonist, setting and post-launch modes, but does not state a specific resolution or frame-rate target. Do not assume a particular performance number from the console exclusivity alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Yōtei’s Complete Edition adds more than the campaign: Echoes of Sekigahara provides additional story content, Most Wanted supplies another mode, and Legends supports cooperative play for up to four players. Those additions make the Complete Edition the relevant comparison with Tsushima Director’s Cut when both games are considered as full packages.
Which game is better on PS5?
There is no universal winner because the games solve different problems. On PS5, Tsushima is the safer recommendation for a player who values a proven, complete package with a defined original arc, Iki Island, Legends and documented display and controller features. It is also the only option of the two if you need PS4 compatibility or PS4 save transfer.
Yōtei is the stronger choice for a player who wants the newest entry, a new protagonist and a story that can be understood without prior play. Its PS5-only design removes the need to choose between console generations, while the Complete Edition’s post-launch additions give it a substantial end-state package by October 2026.

- Japanese lip sync - enjoy a more authentic experience with lip sync for Japanese voiceover, made possible by the PS5 console's ability to render cinematics in real time
- Haptic feedback - master your blade through the DualSense wireless controller's immersive haptic feedback
- Adaptive triggers - enhance your accuracy with a bow with the DualSense wireless controller's adaptive trigger resistance.3D Audio - heighten your awareness by hearing dangers from all around you in 3D spatial audio when you use stereo headphones (analogue or USB).Continue your journey - transfer your Ghost of Tsushima PS4 game save to your PS5 game and pickup where you left off if you already own a PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima.
“Better” should therefore mean “better for your constraints,” not “the later game automatically replaces the earlier one.” A player seeking Jin’s arc cannot get that experience from Yōtei, and a player seeking Atsu’s new story will not find it in Tsushima.
Use this decision process before buying
- Check your console. If you play on PS4, choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut; Ghost of Yōtei is PS5-only.
- Choose your protagonist. Pick Tsushima for Jin Sakai’s original journey or Yōtei for Atsu’s standalone story.
- Decide whether you want the first game’s expansion. Tsushima Director’s Cut includes Iki Island. Yōtei Complete Edition includes Echoes of Sekigahara instead.
- Compare cooperative priorities. Both packages have a Legends mode, but Tsushima’s is included in the Director’s Cut from the outset, while Yōtei’s arrived as post-launch content and supports up to four players in its Complete Edition.
- Consider technical features. Tsushima’s PS5 feature list includes dynamic 4K targeting 60fps, DualSense features, 3D Audio, Japanese lip-sync and PS4 save transfer. Yōtei’s official material supplied here does not state equivalent resolution or frame-rate figures.
- Pick the release order only if it helps your preference. There is no required order for understanding the stories. Release order is useful for tracing the evolution of the design, not for unlocking plot context.
Should you play both, and in what order?
Playing both is worthwhile if you want to see how Sucker Punch evolves its samurai-adventure formula. The most natural order is Tsushima followed by Yōtei: you experience Jin’s 2020 story and Iki Island first, then move to Atsu’s later, separate setting. This order follows release history and lets you notice design changes without making Yōtei’s plot dependent on Tsushima.
Playing Yōtei first is equally valid if the PS5-only release is your entry point. You will not be missing required backstory, and you can return to Tsushima afterward to explore the earlier game’s different protagonist, platform support and included Iki Island expansion.
Common buying and terminology mistakes
Calling Yōtei “Tsushima DLC”
This is the central error. Yōtei is a full standalone game. Only its own Legends mode and other announced additions are downloadable post-launch content. Describing the entire game as DLC implies that Tsushima is required and that Yōtei is a small add-on, neither of which is supported by the official descriptions.
Assuming “300 years later” means a direct sequel
Chronological distance does not make a game a direct sequel. Yōtei’s setting comes later, but Sucker Punch explicitly says the story is not a direct sequel. Treat the 300-year figure as historical context, not as a promise that Jin’s plot continues.
Expecting identical edition contents at every date
Yōtei’s content list changed as post-launch material arrived. The Complete Edition available by October 2026 includes Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and Legends, while launch-era descriptions focused on the base game. Check the edition name and regional store listing at purchase time rather than relying on an old review or launch article.
Assuming PS5 exclusivity proves a particular frame rate
Yōtei’s PS5-only status tells you the supported platform, not a guaranteed resolution or performance mode. Tsushima has the explicit dynamic-4K, 60fps target in its PS5 listing; no equivalent figure is established here for Yōtei.
Final recommendation by player type
| If you are this player | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own only a PS4. | Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT | It is available on PS4; Yōtei is not. |
| You want Jin Sakai’s story. | Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT | Jin is Tsushima’s protagonist, and the Director’s Cut includes Iki Island. |
| You want a fresh protagonist and no prerequisite. | Ghost of Yōtei | Atsu leads a standalone story set about 300 years later. |
| You want the first game’s online mode included in the original package. | Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT | Legends is included with the Director’s Cut. |
| You want the newest complete PS5 package as of October 2026. | Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition | It includes the main game, Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and up-to-four-player Legends co-op. |
| You want documented PS5 features and PS4 save transfer. | Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT on PS5 | The official listing specifies dynamic 4K targeting 60fps, DualSense features, 3D Audio, Japanese lip-sync and save transfer. |
The short answer remains simple: start with Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT for the original samurai journey and the widest platform access; start with Ghost of Yōtei for a newer, standalone PS5 adventure. You do not need Tsushima before Yōtei, and Yōtei is not Tsushima downloadable content.
