Ghost of Yōtei: Echoes of Sekigahara is most worth playing for its story, especially the relationship between Atsu and Nagato. It adds a compact new region and a handful of combat wrinkles, while its free Most Wanted mode offers repeatable fights rather than a major reinvention of the game. GamingBolt’s Ravi Sinha reviewed the PS5 expansion and scored it 8/10.
What does Echoes of Sekigahara add?
The expansion follows Atsu after she has made progress in the base game. Information about a bounty brings her back into contact with Nagato, a figure from her past. Their story moves between the present and flashbacks, including the Battle of Sekigahara. Sinha finds Nagato’s arc engaging and the connection between the two characters effective, though he would have liked more time devoted to their earlier meeting. He also found some of the setup and the finale predictable.

A new area to explore
Ashoro Foothills is a relatively small region, but Sinha describes it as dense with clues, points of interest, residents, and story discoveries. The Vipers’ pressure on the local population provides much of the area’s context. The expansion also introduces new enemy types and a mythic tale.
Small changes to combat
Heavy weapons found in the environment can deliver unblockable attacks, but break after use. Skills can extend their durability or add an attack. Arrows can lodge in Atsu, stopping her from using Spirit until she removes them; doing so leaves her vulnerable. She can also catch and return arrows. These additions create a few situational decisions, but the review considers the overall combat familiar rather than fundamentally changed.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
How Most Wanted plays
Most Wanted is a separate, single-player survival mode built around roguelite runs. You choose a character, take a bounty, fight waves of enemies, select upgrades, and eventually confront a member of the Yōtei Six. PlayStation’s announcement describes four playable characters and bounties that increase in difficulty. Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch Productions, called it “our spin on a roguelike” in the official announcement.
Sinha finds the mode fun and replayable, particularly for players looking for short bursts of single-player action after exhausting other activities. Its less successful element is build crafting: weapon alignment often makes it more practical to switch weapons to counter enemy types than to commit to a chosen build. That makes it better suited to repeatable combat than to players seeking deep, consistent build experimentation.
Rank #2
- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Is the expansion worth playing?
The answer depends on what you want from it. If you are invested in Atsu’s story, the reunion with Nagato and the new region are the clearest reasons to return. If you mainly want new combat systems or a substantially different exploration loop, the review suggests the expansion’s additions are modest. Most Wanted adds another worthwhile option for combat replay, but its weapon-alignment incentives temper its build variety.
These are Ravi Sinha’s judgments in GamingBolt’s PS5 review, published October 5, 2026, where he awarded the expansion 8/10. They are the reviewer’s assessment, not a separate hands-on evaluation.
