The closest match to “Interview: Ghost of Tsushima” is Push Square’s July 29, 2021 conversation with creative director Nate Fox and environments lead Joanna Wang of Sucker Punch. Published before Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut launched, it focuses on Iki Island, PS5 features, visual direction and the team’s inspirations. It is one relevant interview, not the only interview about the game.

How large is the Iki Island expansion?

Fox compared Iki Island’s scale to Izuhara, the first act of the main game: “If you’re familiar with Ghost of Tsushima, Iki Island is the size of, really, the first act of the main game, Izuhara.” He described it as a dense story with landscape and secrets. That is a qualitative comparison from the creative director, not a measured playtime estimate.

Fox also said the expansion adds player skills, armor, stories and new enemy types. Players can access it from Act 2, and encounters become more demanding for those who have advanced further in the main story. These are the developers’ descriptions of the content and intended challenge, not independent measurements.

What did the developers describe for PS5?

Fox discussed three ways the PS5 edition was intended to build on the experience:

#1 Best Overall
Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
  • Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
  • The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
  • Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
  • Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.
  • Haptics and adaptive triggers: He said controller feedback could convey impacts, including a sword deflecting off a shield. As he put it, “This is a game where we can suddenly let you feel what it’s like to hold a katana in your hands when it gets deflected by a shield.”
  • Real-time rendering: Fox linked the PS5’s rendering capabilities to additional lip sync.
  • SSD and transitions: He said the SSD enabled transitions intended to feel more like those in a classic samurai film.

These are descriptions of design goals from the interview; it does not provide benchmark results or a controlled comparison of PS4 and PS5 performance.

How did Sucker Punch describe the game’s visual and cinematic influences?

Wang pointed to bold colors and landscape imagery in the main game, including golden temples and red flower fields. Her description emphasizes the visual direction and beauty of the setting.

Fox said the team was inspired by Japanese samurai cinema, including the films of Akira Kurosawa: “We made this game because we’re massive, massive fans of Japanese samurai cinema, Akira Kurosawa.” He also said the team worked with colleagues and experts in Japan on the period. Those comments describe the team’s inspirations and process; they are not a claim that the game is a definitive or fully historically exact account.
