Ganglia monitoring on an Ubuntu VPS uses three separate pieces: gmond collects and exchanges metrics, gmetad polls those metric sources and stores time-series data, and ganglia-web displays the results. A small VPS can run all three; a larger installation normally runs gmond on every monitored machine and centralizes gmetad and the web interface.
The reliable setup sequence is to install the Ubuntu packages, create matching gmond and gmetad configurations, permit only the required 8649 traffic between trusted peers, then validate each layer before debugging the dashboard.

Ganglia is easier to troubleshoot when its responsibilities are kept separate. The daemons communicate over the network, but they do not perform the same job.
| Component | Runs on | Responsibility | What it must reach |
|---|---|---|---|
gmond |
Every monitored node | Collects host metrics and exchanges them with peers through Ganglia channels. | Its configured send and receive peers, normally on port 8649. |
gmetad |
A collector, often a dedicated VPS | Polls one or more gmond or gmetad sources, writes round-robin databases (RRDs), and exports aggregated XML. |
Every data_source listed in /etc/ganglia/gmetad.conf. |
ganglia-web |
Usually with the collector | Renders the browser dashboard from the collector’s RRD data and XML. | Local access to the RRD files and the collector’s exported data. |
The Ganglia project describes gmetad as the process that “collects information from multiple gmond or gmetad data sources, saves the information to local round-robin databases, and exports XML which is the concatenation of all data sources.” That explains a common empty-dashboard mistake: installing a web interface without a working collector or without any reachable data_source.

One VPS or a central collector?
For a single Ubuntu VPS, install gmond to monitor the machine and gmetad to collect and store its metrics. Add the web frontend if you need a browser view. In a multi-server environment, install gmond on each server and place gmetad and the web frontend on one private, reachable collector. A collector can poll several sources and can list redundant sources for a cluster, but redundancy adds configuration and operational work.
Prerequisites before installing
- An Ubuntu VPS with administrative access through
sudo. - A package repository that contains the Ganglia packages for the Ubuntu release you are actually running.
- A decision about network transport. Multicast is convenient on a private LAN; unicast is generally easier on VPS networks, where providers commonly filter multicast.
- A private address or otherwise restricted path between monitored nodes and the collector. Do not plan to expose Ganglia’s metric channel to the public internet.
Package versions, package names beyond the core set, and service-unit names can change between Ubuntu releases. Check the target image rather than copying assumptions from another release:
Recommended Free Tools
lsb_release -a
sudo apt update
apt-cache policy ganglia-monitor ganglia-monitor-python gmetad
apt-cache search ganglia
Install the Ubuntu packages
The Ganglia quick-start package set for Ubuntu and Debian is ganglia-monitor, ganglia-monitor-python, and gmetad. Install the web frontend package offered by your Ubuntu release only if you need a browser dashboard; identify its exact package name with apt-cache search ganglia first.
- Refresh the package index:
sudo apt update - Install the monitoring and collector components:
sudo apt install ganglia-monitor ganglia-monitor-python gmetad - If a dashboard is required, install the web package shown by the search results for that release. Do not assume that a package name from another Ubuntu version is still current.
- Record where the packages place their configuration and data. The standard files are
/etc/ganglia/gmond.confand/etc/ganglia/gmetad.conf; the RRD directory is determined by the package configuration and should be readable by the web server account.
Build a baseline gmond configuration
Do not start by hand-writing every directive. Generate or inspect the daemon’s baseline configuration, then edit the values that identify your cluster and transport.
gmond --default_config
# Ubuntu also documents the equivalent configuration-test option:
gmond -t
gmond --default_config prints a complete baseline that you can save as /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf. The -t option is useful after edits because it parses the configuration without requiring a normal daemon start.

Set a consistent cluster identity
In the cluster block, set a name that is identical on nodes intended to appear together. The block also carries owner, location, and URL fields. Those descriptive values do not replace the cluster name; they help operators identify the installation in the dashboard.

Use the same logical name on every member of that cluster. A spelling or capitalization mismatch can make one host appear to belong to a different group even when the network path is working.
Choose multicast or unicast deliberately
Multicast can reduce manual peer configuration on a private LAN, but it often fails across cloud or VPS networks. For a single VPS or a small cloud deployment, configure a unicast send channel aimed at the collector and a receive channel on the address and port where the collector expects data. The commonly used channel port is 8649.
The send and receive settings must agree. Verify the destination address, protocol, and port on both sides, and make sure the collector can route to the node. If you use a unicast design, list every intended collector explicitly rather than relying on multicast discovery.

data_source "Cluster A" host[:port] ...
For a collector and monitored daemon on the same VPS, a local entry can look like this:
data_source "Cluster A" 127.0.0.1:8649
If the port is omitted, gmetad assumes 8649. Include the port explicitly when documenting a non-default design or when several channels could cause confusion. For remote nodes, list their private addresses or names in the same data_source line, provided the collector can reach their TCP metric endpoint.
A single data_source line can name multiple sources. That lets gmetad poll several nodes in one cluster. Redundant sources are possible, but add them only when you have a clear failover requirement and have tested which source should be preferred.
Start the daemons safely
Ubuntu package integration and unit names vary by release. Discover the installed units before enabling them:
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -E 'gmond|gmetad'
Validate the configuration first, then enable and start the units reported by that command. A typical systemd sequence, after substituting the unit names present on your image, is:

sudo gmond -t
sudo systemctl enable --now <gmond-unit>
sudo systemctl enable --now gmetad
sudo systemctl status <gmond-unit> gmetad
Use the actual unit name supplied by the package; some releases expose a name containing gmond rather than a uniform name across distributions. Review startup errors immediately:
sudo journalctl -u <gmond-unit> -b --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u gmetad -b --no-pager
Open only the required firewall paths
| Traffic | Protocol and port | Allow from | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| gmond exchange | UDP 8649 | Known Ganglia peers or the private monitoring network | Metric exchange between monitored nodes and, where configured, the collector. |
| gmetad polling | TCP 8649 | The collector’s private address | Polling a node’s metric stream. |
| Dashboard | HTTPS on the web server’s configured port | Your intended users | Browser access; protect it with web-server authentication. |
On an internet-facing VPS, do not broadly allow UDP or TCP 8649. Restrict cloud security-group rules and the host firewall to the private addresses of the collector and monitored peers. For example, a private monitoring subnet could be represented in a UFW rule like this, with the subnet replaced by your real one:
sudo ufw allow proto udp from 10.0.0.0/24 to any port 8649
sudo ufw allow proto tcp from 10.0.0.0/24 to any port 8649
Apply only the protocol each path needs. If the node sends metrics to a collector but does not accept inbound polling from other systems, do not open an unnecessary inbound TCP rule.
Use gmond access control as a second boundary
Firewall rules are not the only protection. Ganglia’s ACL support can explicitly allow or deny source IP addresses and masks, including a default-deny policy. Configure the ACL so that only the collector and approved peers can exchange metrics, then test from both an allowed and an unapproved address. Keep the ACL and firewall inventories aligned when a node is moved to a new private subnet.
Add the web dashboard without exposing the daemons
The web frontend normally runs with gmetad because it needs access to the RRD files that the collector writes. Installing a web package alone will not create data. Confirm that the collector is running, its RRD directory is populated, and the web server user can read those files.

Validate each layer in order
Checking the components in dependency order avoids guessing at the dashboard.
- Parse gmond’s configuration. Run
sudo gmond -t. Correct syntax errors before starting or restarting the service. - Check the listening sockets. After startup, inspect the configured channels with a socket tool available on the VPS, for example:
sudo ss -lunpt | grep 8649Confirm that the expected UDP and TCP listeners exist and are bound to an address reachable by the intended peers.
- Check the network path. Confirm that cloud firewall rules, host firewall rules, routing, and gmond ACLs permit the expected source. From a collector testing a local daemon,
nc -vz 127.0.0.1 8649can verify the TCP endpoint; use the node’s private address for a remote test. - Check gmetad’s source list. Read
/etc/ganglia/gmetad.confand verify that at least onedata_sourcenames the correct host and port. A typo here leaves the collector with nothing to poll even whengmondis healthy. - Check collector logs and files. Inspect
journalctl -u gmetadfor connection or parsing errors and verify that RRD files are being created or updated in the configured data directory. - Check the frontend last. Make sure the web configuration points to the collector’s exported data and that its process can read the RRD directory. Refresh only after the lower layers show current timestamps.
Why a Ganglia dashboard is empty
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No hosts or charts at all | gmetad has no valid data_source, or the web frontend is pointed at the wrong collector/data directory. |
Verify the source line, collector logs, RRD permissions, and the frontend’s collector path. |
| The daemon is running but the collector reports no data | UDP/TCP 8649 is blocked, the channel mode differs between nodes, or an ACL rejects the collector. | Check protocol, address, port, cloud rules, host firewall rules, and gmond ACLs in that order. |
| A host appears briefly and then disappears | Updates are being missed, or stale-host limits are shorter than the outage or polling interval. | Review host_tmax, host_dmax, and cleanup settings in gmond.conf; adjust only after deciding how long stale data should remain visible. |
| Only local data appears | Remote nodes are not sending to the same channel, or the collector cannot route to their private addresses. | Compare cluster and channel settings on every node and test reachability from the collector. |
| Services fail immediately after an edit | A syntax error or unsupported directive was added to the configuration. | Run gmond -t, inspect the unit’s journal, and compare the edited file with a fresh gmond --default_config baseline. |
Control retention and freshness deliberately
Ganglia keeps time-series data in round-robin databases, while gmond controls how long stale hosts and metrics remain visible. The important settings include host_tmax, host_dmax, and the associated cleanup behavior. A host is considered down after repeated missed updates and can later be removed from view.
Do not shorten these values merely to make the dashboard look clean. First decide whether the dashboard is for live operations, post-outage investigation, or both. Then choose a stale-data window that matches your polling and alerting expectations, and test the result by stopping a test node briefly.
Scaling beyond one VPS
Adding monitored nodes
Install ganglia-monitor and, when Python-based collectors are needed, ganglia-monitor-python on each node. Give every node the same cluster identity, configure its unicast destination or shared private multicast channel, and permit only the collector and approved peers through the firewall and ACL.
Centralising collection
Run one gmetad for a small deployment and list each reachable source in its configuration. Centralisation keeps RRD storage and dashboard access in one place, while leaving metric collection close to the systems being measured. Add a second source or collector only after documenting the intended failover behavior.
Quick Recap
Operational checks after changes
- Re-run
gmond -tafter every configuration change. - Confirm listeners with
ssand verify that only the required interfaces are exposed. - Review both daemon journals after restarts.
- Check that new RRD files receive current timestamps before investigating browser caching or frontend settings.
- When moving nodes or collectors, update cloud firewall rules, host firewall rules, ACLs, and every affected
data_sourceentry together.
A compact first-install checklist
- Confirm the Ubuntu release and package availability with
apt-cache policy. - Install
ganglia-monitor,ganglia-monitor-python, andgmetad. - Generate a baseline configuration and save it as
/etc/ganglia/gmond.conf. - Set one consistent cluster name and choose unicast when the VPS network does not support multicast.
- Add a reachable
data_sourceto/etc/ganglia/gmetad.conf. - Validate, enable, and start the actual units installed on the Ubuntu image.
- Restrict UDP and TCP 8649 to monitoring peers; protect any web endpoint with HTTPS and authentication.
- Verify sockets, network reachability, gmetad logs, RRD updates, and only then the browser dashboard.
