Beaver Builder is a drag-and-drop WordPress plugin for designing the content area of pages. Install its ZIP from your Beaver Builder account, activate it under Plugins, open a page with Launch Beaver Builder, and build the layout by placing modules in columns. Your WordPress theme still supplies the header, footer, sidebar, and other theme-owned areas.

What Beaver Builder does—and what it does not

Beaver Builder replaces the usual page-content editing experience with a visual layout editor. You assemble a page from rows, columns, and modules, then edit text, images, spacing, colors, and responsive settings in the same interface. The resulting layout is stored with the page in WordPress; it is not a separate hosted site.

The plugin works inside the area normally occupied by page content. The active WordPress theme continues to control the site header, footer, sidebar, blog metadata, and other theme regions. If you need custom templates for archives, search results, index pages, or multiple theme parts, the normal page builder is not enough: Beaver Themer is the separate premium add-on intended for those layouts.

WordPress still requires a theme even when every page is designed with Beaver Builder. You can use the plugin with a theme from another vendor. The optional Beaver Builder Theme is a framework theme with Customizer settings; the vendor says it is not required for the plugin, although its child theme is strongly encouraged when you select that theme.

Check requirements before installing

Current Beaver Builder system-requirements documentation (2026) lists WordPress 6.8 or newer. It also requires an enabled WordPress REST API, at least 128 MB of WordPress memory, and server settings that permit the editor to load in a frame under your content-security policy (CSP).

  • WordPress: 6.8 or higher.
  • REST API: visit https://your-domain.example/wp-json/ while substituting your own domain. A JSON response indicates that the endpoint is reachable; a blocked or authentication-only response needs to be resolved before editing.
  • Memory: 128 MB is the documented minimum recommendation. Beaver Builder prefers 256 MB or more, especially on sites with large images, many plugins, or complex layouts. These are vendor requirements, not an independent performance benchmark.
  • Framing and CSP: your host and security headers must allow the builder interface to load its editing frame. A restrictive frame-ancestors, X-Frame-Options, firewall rule, or security plugin can prevent the editor from opening.

Update WordPress and take a backup before changing the page builder or theme. On a managed host, ask support to confirm the PHP and memory settings and whether security headers allow the WordPress admin editor to frame the site.

Install the Beaver Builder plugin

A premium installation starts with two items from your Beaver Builder My Account area: the plugin ZIP and your license key. Keep the downloaded file in ZIP format; WordPress can upload that archive directly.

  1. Sign in to your account. Download the Beaver Builder plugin ZIP and copy the license key for the edition you purchased. Do not extract the archive before uploading it.
  2. Open the uploader. In WordPress administration, go to Plugins > Add New, choose Upload Plugin, and select the ZIP file.
  3. Install it. Click Install Now and wait for WordPress to complete the upload. If WordPress reports that the package is too large, use the host’s upload limit or ask the host to raise it; do not replace the ZIP with an arbitrary renamed file.
  4. Activate it. Select Activate Plugin on the completion screen, or return to Plugins > Installed Plugins and activate Beaver Builder there.
  5. Enter the premium key. Go to Settings > Beaver Builder > License, paste the key, and save. A successful activation enables the account’s updates and support entitlement for that site.

The free Lite edition follows the same WordPress upload and activation process when you obtain its ZIP from the official source, but it does not require a paid license key. If your account has several sites, review its activation allowance before enabling a production, staging, and development copy; the exact multisite and site-activation limits depend on the current license plan.

Choose Lite or Premium

Lite is designed as a way to learn the interface and build a straightforward page with its included module subset. Premium is the practical choice when a site needs a larger module library, reusable design assets, centralized styling, custom templates, or Beaver Themer.

Capability Lite Premium
Core visual page builder Included Included
Module breadth Smaller included subset Broader module set
Global styles Not included Included
Reusable rows, columns, modules, and templates Not included Included
Beaver Themer compatibility Not included Included as a separate add-on capability
Theme Use your existing WordPress theme Use your existing theme or optionally the Beaver Builder Theme
Billing Free Annual license billing, according to the official FAQ
Updates, downloads, and support after expiry Lite distribution rules apply Expired paid licenses lose access to downloads, updates, and support
Exact site and multisite limits Not stated as a universal figure Plan-dependent; check the current pricing and license terms

Start with Lite if you are evaluating the editing model or need a single simple landing page. Move to Premium when repeating a design across pages, enforcing a shared visual system, or editing theme-level templates would otherwise require duplicated work. Because paid licenses renew annually, include renewal timing in your maintenance calendar.

Open the Beaver Builder editor

You can launch the same editor from several WordPress screens:

  • Block editor: create or edit a page, then choose Launch Beaver Builder.
  • Classic editor: open the page and select Launch Beaver Builder from the page’s builder controls.
  • Pages list: go to Pages > All Pages, locate the page, and use its Beaver Builder launch action.

If the launch control is missing, confirm that the plugin is active, the post type is enabled in Beaver Builder settings, and your user account has permission to edit that page. A blank or endlessly loading editor usually points to the REST API, memory, JavaScript, framing, or security-header requirement rather than a page-content mistake.

Build your first page with modules

Modules are the practical building blocks. They sit inside columns, and columns sit inside rows. The module panel groups items into content, container, and block types; the exact list depends on your edition and enabled extensions.

  1. Open the Content Panel. In the editor, click the plus button to reveal available rows and modules.
  2. Add a layout. Drag a row or column structure onto the canvas. Choose the number of columns that matches the content instead of creating many narrow columns that will be hard to read on phones.
  3. Place a module. Drag an appropriate module into a column. A first page commonly needs a Heading, Text Editor, Photo, and Button module, but use the module that matches the content rather than styling ordinary text as an image.
  4. Enter content. Add the heading, copy, image alternative text, button label, and destination URL in the module’s content settings. Keep link destinations stable and test them before publishing.
  5. Style deliberately. Set typography, colors, backgrounds, borders, and spacing only where the page needs an exception. Modules inherit theme styling unless you explicitly override it, so a page can stay consistent with the rest of the site without duplicating every theme value.
  6. Reuse when appropriate. Premium users can save rows, columns, modules, or complete templates for reuse and can apply global styles. Name reusable assets by purpose (for example, “Primary call-to-action row”) so another editor can identify them later.
  7. Save and publish. Save the layout, preview it, and publish only after checking the page at the intended viewport sizes.

Content and accessibility checks

  • Use one clear primary heading and a logical heading hierarchy.
  • Supply meaningful alternative text for informative images; mark decorative images as decorative where your workflow supports it.
  • Make button text describe the destination instead of using “click here.”
  • Maintain readable color contrast and do not communicate status by color alone.
  • Check that keyboard focus is visible and that interactive controls remain reachable on a narrow screen.

Responsive editing and publishing checklist

A desktop canvas does not prove that a page works on a phone. Before publishing, switch through the builder’s responsive views and inspect both the layout and the actual front-end page.

  • Confirm that columns stack in an intentional order on narrow screens.
  • Check heading sizes, line lengths, and button widths at phone and tablet breakpoints.
  • Remove accidental horizontal scrolling caused by oversized images, fixed widths, or negative margins.
  • Verify row and module spacing so sections do not become excessively tall on mobile.
  • Open every button and navigation link, including links in reusable rows.
  • Test the published URL while logged out or in a private browser window; caching and optimization plugins can serve a different version to visitors.
  • Review the page in the browsers and viewport sizes your audience actually uses.

Save a draft while experimenting. Publishing each small change makes rollback harder and can expose unfinished content to visitors.

Theme, child theme, and Themer boundaries

Using your existing theme

You do not need to replace your current theme to use the plugin. Beaver Builder lays out the content area while the theme continues to render the surrounding shell. This is often the least disruptive option for an established site.

Installing the optional Beaver Builder Theme

If you choose that theme, upload both the parent and child theme ZIP files under Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme. Install the parent first, then the child, and activate the child theme. The vendor describes the child theme as optional but strongly encouraged so customizations can survive parent-theme updates. Do not activate the child before its parent is installed.

When Beaver Themer is required

Use Beaver Themer when the requirement is broader than one page’s content area—for example, a custom archive template, search-results layout, index template, or a coordinated header and footer condition. The standard page builder alone cannot directly design those theme-part and archive locations.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

“The editor will not open”

Check the /wp-json/ endpoint, confirm WordPress is 6.8 or newer, and ask the host to verify at least 128 MB of WordPress memory (256 MB or more is preferable). Temporarily review security-plugin and CSP settings for blocked framing or REST requests. Browser developer-console errors can identify a JavaScript conflict, but change one setting at a time and restore protections after testing.

“The license is not accepted”

Make sure you entered the key under Settings > Beaver Builder > License, copied the complete value without spaces, and assigned an available site activation in your account. A staging clone may count as another activation under the plan’s terms. If the subscription expired, downloads, updates, and support are no longer included until it is renewed.

“The page looks different after publishing”

Compare the editor preview with the logged-out front end. Clear page, browser, and CDN caches, then inspect theme CSS and optimization settings for overridden styles. Remember that modules inherit theme styles unless you set an explicit module value; a global theme change can therefore affect several builder pages at once.

“Images or columns overflow on mobile”

Inspect responsive settings for fixed widths, large minimum heights, negative margins, and unscaled images. Let columns stack, set images to a responsive width, and remove decorative spacing that has no purpose at the phone breakpoint. Recheck the published page rather than relying only on the editor canvas.

Keep the installation maintainable

Record the WordPress version, active theme, Beaver Builder edition, license-renewal date, and any Themer or child-theme dependency. Test updates on staging when possible, especially when the page uses custom CSS or several optimization plugins. Keep reusable rows and templates named clearly, remove obsolete assets, and document which pages depend on global styles. This makes a future editor’s first change safer than rebuilding a layout whose origins are unclear.
