The quickest official way to make a FiveM server is to run the recommended FXServer artifact and complete the bundled txAdmin setup. You download the server files, open txAdmin in a browser, link a Cfx account, create a free Cfx Portal server registration key, deploy the CFX Default recipe, and start the server. For learning and local play, host it on your own Windows or Linux computer; use a game-server hosting provider when it must stay online or be reachable publicly.
What you need before creating a FiveM server
A basic server requires downloadable software, a Cfx account, a registration key, and a computer or hosting service that can keep the server process running. You do not install txAdmin as a separate application: it is bundled with FXServer.

- Server software: the latest recommended FiveM server artifact. Cfx describes artifacts as the software package needed to run or update a FiveM server.
- An operating system: Windows is the most direct path in the beginner walkthrough. Linux is supported, but Cfx describes its build as a courtesy port because distribution compatibility and diagnostic-tool availability can vary.
- A Cfx account: txAdmin uses it to identify you during setup.
- A free server registration key: create this in the Cfx Portal and paste it into txAdmin or
server.cfg. - Network access: local players can connect over the same LAN. Internet players require a reachable server and network configuration that permits FiveM traffic.
- A dedicated data folder: keeping server files and server data in organized, separate locations makes updates and backups safer.
The default FiveM endpoint is 0.0.0.0:30120 on both TCP and UDP. The address means the server listens on the computer’s available network interfaces; players do not normally enter 0.0.0.0 as the address in their client.
Choose where the server will run
| Option | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Windows or Linux computer | Learning, development and occasional LAN sessions | Uses hardware and internet access you already have; provides direct access to every file and setting | You maintain updates, backups, firewall rules, uptime and the network connection; the server stops when the computer or process stops |
| Game-server hosting provider | An always-on server or players outside your local network | Provider infrastructure is designed to stay online and usually includes a control panel and data-center connectivity | Recurring cost, host policies and panel limits; price, location, uptime, player capacity and database support vary by provider and plan |
Start locally if your goal is to learn recipes, resources and configuration. Move to a provider when continuous availability or public access matters more than direct control. The official setup documentation treats both local operating systems and game-server hosting as supported deployment paths.

How FXServer and txAdmin fit together
FXServer artifacts
An artifact is the packaged server build. Download the latest recommended artifact rather than selecting an arbitrary experimental build. Extract it into a folder reserved for the server; do not run it from inside the compressed archive. Updating later normally means stopping the server, replacing the artifact files with a newer recommended build, and preserving your server-data directory and configuration.
txAdmin
txAdmin is the browser-based management panel included with FXServer. Cfx describes it as a full-featured web panel for managing and monitoring a FiveM server. It can deploy recipes, start or stop the server and individual resources, edit and validate configuration, manage permissions and whitelists, moderate players, and provide an in-game administration menu.
The registration key
A free Cfx Portal server registration key is required to register the server. This is separate from your account password and from any optional game resources you add later. Keep the key private: anyone who can use it with your server configuration may be able to register or operate a server under that key.
Set up a FiveM server with txAdmin
The following workflow follows the official beginner route. Windows uses FXServer.exe; Linux uses the equivalent run.sh launcher.

- Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
- Download the recommended artifact. Open the official Cfx server download page and select the latest recommended build for your operating system. Save the archive locally.
- Extract the files. Unpack the archive into a dedicated server folder. On Windows, open that folder and run
FXServer.exe. On Linux, make the launcher executable if necessary and runrun.shfrom the extracted directory. - Open txAdmin. txAdmin should open automatically in your browser. If it does not, go to
http://localhost:40120. Enter the one-time PIN printed in the FXServer console. The address is local to the machine running FXServer. - Register the panel. Link your Cfx account, create a backup password, review the Creator Platform License Agreement and the txAdmin License, then complete registration. Store the backup password somewhere safe; it is intended to help recover access to the panel.
- Select the starter recipe. In txAdmin, choose Popular Recipes, select FiveM Basic Server (CFX Default), leave the data location at its configured value unless you have a specific storage reason to change it, and open the Recipe Deployer.
- Create a server key. In the Cfx Portal, generate a free server registration key. Return to txAdmin and paste the key into the recipe deployment field. Do not publish the key in screenshots, chat messages or public repositories.
- Deploy the recipe. Run the recipe and wait for txAdmin to create the baseline server-data files and resources. The recipe is the shortest path to a working basic server because it writes the initial configuration for you.
- Save and run. Save the configuration, then start the server from txAdmin. Watch the console for startup errors before attempting to connect.
- Connect from FiveM. Launch the FiveM client on the same LAN and connect to the computer running FXServer. If the server does not appear immediately, restart the FiveM client and try the LAN connection again.
At this point you have a basic server, not a finished role-play framework or a public community. Additional resources, permissions, rules, backups and network hardening are separate decisions.
Connect players outside your home network
LAN access is the least complicated test because the client and server share the same local network. Public access adds three operational responsibilities:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Reachability: the machine must remain online, and your internet connection must accept incoming traffic. Many residential connections use changing public addresses or carrier-level restrictions.
- Firewall and router rules: allow the server’s default TCP and UDP port,
30120, where your network design requires it. Router menus differ, so use the exact private address assigned to the server computer and avoid exposing unrelated services. - Maintenance: apply artifact updates, protect the Cfx key and txAdmin account, back up server data, and monitor resource or script failures.
If configuring inbound traffic is inconvenient, a game-server hosting provider is the more practical deployment option. Verify a provider’s current plan details directly; the official documentation does not establish universal prices, player limits, locations or uptime guarantees.
Manual setup with server.cfg
txAdmin is recommended for beginners, but a manual installation is useful when you want explicit command-line control or an existing server-data layout. The vanilla guide uses a separate server-data directory and a server.cfg file.

Create the configuration
In server.cfg, include your registration key and the default endpoints:
sv_licenseKey "licenseKeyGoesHere"
endpoint_add_tcp "0.0.0.0:30120"
endpoint_add_udp "0.0.0.0:30120"
Use the actual key in place of licenseKeyGoesHere. Keep the baseline resources required by the vanilla guide enabled; removing them before confirming a clean startup makes troubleshooting harder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLaunch the server
Run the launcher from the correct server-data context and explicitly load the configuration:
- Windows:
FXServer.exe +exec server.cfg - Linux:
run.sh +exec server.cfg
The +exec server.cfg argument tells FXServer which configuration to load. Without it, the process can start without your resources, endpoints or license settings.

The resources list is missing
This usually means the command was launched from the wrong folder or the server-data directory is not where the configuration expects it. Stop FXServer, change to the directory containing the intended data and configuration files, and launch again.

Check that you included +exec server.cfg in the launch command. A server process can appear to run while ignoring the configuration that defines resources and endpoints.
“No license key was specified”
Confirm that sv_licenseKey exists in the loaded server.cfg, that the value is the key generated in the Cfx Portal, and that the file you edited is the file passed to FXServer. In txAdmin, confirm that the key was pasted into the recipe deployment step before running it.
txAdmin does not open
Check the FXServer console for its printed PIN and panel status, then browse manually to http://localhost:40120 on the same computer. If the page still does not load, verify that FXServer is actually running and that another application is not occupying the panel’s local port.

The server works locally but not for internet players
First retest from the same LAN so you know the server itself is healthy. Then check the operating-system firewall, router forwarding for TCP and UDP 30120, the server computer’s current private address and whether your ISP permits inbound connections. A provider-hosted deployment avoids most home-router and residential-ISP constraints.

Once the basic server runs, txAdmin becomes the day-to-day control surface:
- Server and resource controls: start, stop or restart the whole server or an individual resource without manually closing and reopening every process.
- Configuration management: edit settings in the panel and use its validation before restarting.
- Recipes: repeat a documented deployment rather than rebuilding files by hand.
- Access control: create permissions and whitelist rules so administration is not limited to a shared console login.
- Player moderation: use the moderation tools and in-game admin menu according to your community’s rules.
Give administrative permissions only to trusted people, use a unique backup password, and keep the txAdmin interface off the public internet unless you have deliberately secured access to it.
Backups, updates and a sensible maintenance routine
- Stop cleanly before changes. Stop the server from txAdmin before replacing artifacts or editing major configuration sections.
- Back up server data. Copy the server-data directory, configuration files and any resource-specific data to storage separate from the live machine. Test that you can read the backup.
- Update deliberately. Read the artifact version information, replace only the server build files, and preserve your configuration and data. Test on a non-public instance when a change affects resources or scripts.
- Protect credentials. Keep the Cfx registration key, txAdmin backup password and any database credentials out of public repositories and screenshots.
- Review logs after restarts. A successful process launch does not guarantee that every resource loaded correctly. Check the console before inviting players.
txAdmin or manual configuration?
| Decision point | txAdmin recipe | Manual server.cfg setup |
|---|---|---|
| Setup speed | Fastest for a first server; browser prompts create the baseline files | Slower; you create the data layout and configuration yourself |
| Configuration visibility | Panel exposes configuration and validation while still allowing file-level work | Direct control of every launch argument and configuration line |
| Repeatability | Recipes make a standard deployment easier to reproduce | Repeatability depends on your scripts, notes and backups |
| Command-line work | Minimal after starting FXServer | Required for launch context, +exec and troubleshooting |
| Best starting point | Beginners, LAN testing and administrators who want a web panel | Experienced operators with an established automation or file-based workflow |
For a first installation, choose txAdmin. Manual mode is not a more complete version of the server; it is a different way to assemble and operate the same FXServer software.
