A Wi-Fi connection problem does not automatically mean the computer’s wireless module is broken. The fault may be in the device’s settings or driver, the saved network configuration, the router or modem, or the internet service. Compare the affected device with another device on the same network, then work through the checks below before considering repair or replacement.
What “Wi-Fi module” can mean
The phrase can refer to a computer’s built-in wireless adapter, the software driver that lets the operating system use it, or—in less precise usage—the wireless networking equipment. These components are different, and the same symptom, such as no internet connection, can have several causes. The steps here cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers and Android phones. Menu names can vary by operating-system version, manufacturer, and language.
First find out whether the problem is the device or the network
Try the same Wi-Fi network on another phone or computer. If that device connects, investigate the original device. If multiple devices cannot connect, focus on the router, modem, or internet service instead. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not by itself prove which component failed. Microsoft and Google recommend cross-device checks in their Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide and Pixel connection guidance.

- If other devices also fail on the same network, check the network equipment and contact the internet provider if service remains unavailable.
- On a Windows computer, a working Ethernet connection can help indicate that the issue is with Wi-Fi or the wireless router rather than general internet access.
Check basic settings and reconnect
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Confirm that Wi-Fi is turned on and Airplane mode is off, then check whether Windows shows the expected network as connected. If the network is saved but may have an outdated password or configuration, forget it and connect again using the current password. Microsoft’s Windows instructions cover these connection checks.

Android phones
Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is off. On Pixel phones, Google also recommends toggling these settings, restarting the phone, and testing another network or device. Android steps and labels vary by manufacturer and version; Google’s Wi-Fi connection instructions explain how to connect to, forget, and reset a saved connection.
Restart the network equipment if several devices are affected
If multiple devices have trouble or the modem or router appears stuck, restart the equipment. This temporarily disconnects everyone using the network. Microsoft’s general sequence is to unplug power from both the modem and router, wait at least about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, wait for it to finish starting, and then reconnect the router. Equipment differs, so follow its manual if it gives a different procedure.

Check whether Windows detects the wireless adapter
Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Look for the wireless adapter and check whether it is enabled and reporting a problem. If it is disabled, enable it. If it is missing, Windows may not have the necessary driver, or there may be a hardware or device-specific issue; absence from the list alone does not identify which one.
For a missing or malfunctioning driver, use the support site for the computer’s manufacturer and match the download to the exact computer model. Microsoft advises obtaining a backup driver before uninstalling the current one when possible. After a restart, Windows may detect the adapter and install a driver; keep the backup available in case automatic installation fails. Consider a driver rollback or reinstall after a recent update
If Wi-Fi stopped working after a Windows update, the driver may be involved. Check for available updates and consult the computer maker’s support instructions before making advanced driver changes. If reinstalling a driver, obtain the correct model-specific driver first when possible so you have a recovery option if Windows does not reinstall it automatically.
Use Windows Network reset only after simpler checks
Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and returns their settings to defaults. It is a last resort rather than a routine first step: VPN software and Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be installed or configured again afterward. Follow the Network reset instructions in Microsoft’s Windows support guide only after basic checks and adapter or driver troubleshooting have not resolved the problem.

Try Android’s connection reset when ordinary reconnecting fails
Google’s Android guidance includes resetting the internet connection and forgetting a saved Wi-Fi network. A connection reset can end an active phone or video call. Menu names and available options depend on the device, so use the instructions for the phone’s Android version and manufacturer. Google describes these options in its Android internet troubleshooting guide and Wi-Fi connection guide.

Consider model-specific manufacturer support or a qualified repair service if the computer still cannot detect its wireless adapter after supported software checks, or if the problem follows the device across different networks. A failed connection to one network, by itself, is not enough to diagnose a defective module. The correct replacement part cannot be identified without the computer’s make and model.

Repair rules are product-specific. For Google Nest Wifi Pro, Google’s safety guide says: “Do not attempt to repair your Nest Wifi Pro yourself. Disassembling the device may cause injury or damage to your device.” It directs owners to customer service; this warning applies to that product, not automatically to every computer or router. When an external Wi-Fi adapter is only a workaround
If a computer’s built-in adapter is unavailable, a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter may provide wireless connectivity without repairing the internal module. It is a workaround, not proof that the built-in hardware is defective or that it has been repaired. Before choosing one, check compatibility with the exact computer and operating system, available port, supported Wi-Fi bands or standards, and driver availability. No particular adapter is established as suitable for every computer.
