To turn off Safe Mode on most Android tablets, restart the tablet. On a Samsung Galaxy tablet, power it off completely, wait until it has shut down, then turn it back on. If it keeps starting in Safe Mode, check for a case or accessory pressing a button and follow the manufacturer’s directions for your exact model.
Restart the tablet to turn off Safe Mode
- Open the tablet’s power menu. Choose Restart if available. Otherwise, choose Power off, wait for the tablet to shut down fully, then press the power button to start it again.
- When the tablet starts, check that the Safe Mode label is gone and that your downloaded apps are available.
For Galaxy tablets, Samsung’s support instructions say to power the device off, wait until it is fully off, and turn it back on. On some supported Samsung devices, a Safe Mode notification may also offer an option to turn it off and restart.
Why Safe Mode turns off your apps
Safe Mode is a temporary diagnostic startup, not an app you need to uninstall. Samsung says it disables downloaded apps and loads the original software that came with the device; Google describes it as temporarily turning off downloaded apps. This lets you check whether a downloaded app may be causing a problem.

Google’s Android guidance directs users to their device manufacturer for model-specific instructions. Lenovo’s Safe Mode guidance also recommends restarting to exit.

If the tablet starts in Safe Mode again
Check the physical buttons and accessories
Remove the case and any accessories that could press a button, especially a volume control. Check whether a button is stuck or fails to move and click normally. A button held down during startup can interfere with normal operation; the exact behavior depends on the tablet model.
Use instructions for your exact model
Button combinations and menus are not universal across Android tablets. Look up Safe Mode instructions from the tablet’s manufacturer using its model name or number. Samsung’s Australian Galaxy support page, for example, is specifically scoped to Australian variants.

Check recently installed apps if normal mode has problems
If the tablet works in Safe Mode but has trouble during ordinary use, a recently downloaded app may be responsible. Samsung recommends uninstalling recent apps one at a time and checking the tablet after each removal. This is troubleshooting for a problem that persists in normal operation, not a required step for simply exiting Safe Mode.
Should you factory-reset the tablet?
No—not just to turn off Safe Mode. Restarting is the ordinary exit procedure. A factory reset is a separate escalation for other persistent problems and erases data. Google advises backing up the tablet before resetting it; see its factory-reset guidance.
