To get a Ring camera online, use the Ring app to connect it to your home Wi-Fi. For a new camera, choose Set Up a Device > Security Cams and follow the setup prompts. For a camera you have already configured, open Device Health and choose Reconnect or Change Network. Check the camera’s power, Wi-Fi signal, and password before attempting a reset.

What you need to get a Ring camera online

Ring camera setup requires an existing home Wi-Fi network, the Ring app, and a phone or tablet. Have the Wi-Fi password ready, update the app and mobile device if updates are available, and keep the phone near the camera during setup. Charge a battery-powered camera before you begin. Ring’s product and service FAQ says every Ring device supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; 5 GHz support depends on the model.

Set up a Ring camera for the first time

  1. Open the Ring app. Sign in or create an account, then select Set Up a Device and Security Cams from the dashboard.
  2. Scan the camera’s QR code. The code’s location varies by model. If you cannot find it, use the model help in the app.
  3. Enter the location and name. Follow the prompts to select or enter the address, then choose a suggested camera name or enter a custom one.
  4. Put the camera in setup mode. Follow the app’s instructions for your specific model. Setup-button locations differ, so do not assume the same button or location applies to every camera.
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi. When prompted, join the temporary Ring setup network, select your home network, and enter its password. Let any software update finish before leaving the setup flow.

For model-specific setup instructions, see Ring’s camera setup guide. Button locations and steps can vary by product.

Reconnect a Ring camera that is already set up

  1. In the Ring app, open the camera’s settings.
  2. Select Device Health.
  3. Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts.

The app’s offline indicator may show an error code and suggested steps. Follow the camera’s light pattern or audio cues during reconnection. Ring’s offline-device guide covers the app workflow; labels can differ by app version or region.

If the camera will not connect or appears offline

Work through the checks below before resetting the camera. An offline status can result from a power problem, incorrect Wi-Fi credentials, weak coverage, or setup and router conditions; a weak signal is not the only possible cause.

Check power first

  • Confirm the camera is switched on and, for a battery-powered model, charge the battery.
  • For a hardwired camera, verify that it is using the correct power source for that model.

Consult the instructions for your exact camera before buying a replacement battery or power supply; accessories are not universal.

  • See more. Know more. Protect more. — Scroll back in time to rewatch what you missed, get intelligent ** alerts that tell you what’s happening, and so much more with a compatible Ring Protect subscription (sold separately).

Check the network and password

  • Confirm your phone can connect to the home Wi-Fi network and that you are entering the correct password.
  • Move the camera closer to the router temporarily and try again. If it connects nearby but not in its usual location, coverage may be the issue.
  • Use 2.4 GHz if your camera does not support 5 GHz or the 5 GHz network is unavailable. Ring states that all its devices support 2.4 GHz, but 5 GHz support varies by model.

Check setup mode and router conditions

For a new setup, make sure the camera is in setup mode and check its light pattern against the instructions for that model. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guide also identifies guest networks, router firewall or port settings, multiple routers, and certain network-name characters as possible obstacles. These are advanced checks: ask your internet provider or router manufacturer for help changing router-specific settings.

Consider a reset or power cycle only after basic checks

If the camera still cannot find or connect to its setup network, or remains offline after the checks above, try a power cycle or factory reset using the instructions for that exact model. Ring models do not all share the same reset procedure, button location, or hold time. A reset should not be the first troubleshooting step.

When a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system may help

Consider coverage equipment only after checking power, credentials, and the camera’s connection near the router. Moving the camera or router may be enough. If the signal remains weak at the camera’s location, an extender such as Ring Chime Pro or a mesh Wi-Fi system may improve coverage. Choose an option compatible with your camera and existing network, and consider whether it reaches the camera’s installed location; neither is required for basic setup. Ring discusses these options in its offline-device guidance and product FAQ.
