To improve the chance that a person reviews your resume, apply through the employer’s stated process, tailor the document honestly to the specific role, make it easy to read, and answer every application question accurately. A referral or brief recruiter outreach can add a human connection, but neither guarantees review or replaces the formal application.
What an applicant tracking system does—and why the process varies
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software employers may use to collect, organize, sort, rank, or screen applications. It is part of a hiring workflow, not one universal gate that works identically at every employer. The University of Texas at Austin describes these functions as collecting, ranking, sorting, and reviewing resumes; Concordia University describes systems that collect, organize, and screen applications.
Some applications receive automated screening before a person reviews them; some workflows combine automated tools with human review in different ways. For federal jobs, the USAJOBS Help Center says that some agencies use automated review and that a human resources specialist verifies resume information. USAJOBS states: “Real people, human resource specialists, do look at resumes.” That guidance concerns federal hiring; it is not a guarantee about every employer or vacancy. Because employers configure their processes differently, no formatting trick or keyword recipe can ensure a human read. Focus instead on submitting a clear, accurate application that makes your fit easy to recognize.

Tailor your resume to the role without exaggerating
Before editing, compare the job posting with your real experience, skills, and qualifications. Use relevant terms from the posting when they accurately describe your background, then support them with specific evidence. UT Austin recommends preparing a tailored resume for each position. UT Austin Career Services: Applicant Tracking Systems
- Identify the role’s essential skills, responsibilities, and stated qualifications.
- Bring your closest matching experience and accomplishments into clear view.
- Use the employer’s terminology for a skill or responsibility when it truthfully fits your experience.
- Describe what you did and, where relevant, the result; don’t list keywords without context.
A tailored version should clarify your fit, not change the facts. Do not claim a qualification you lack, and do not repeat terms mechanically. Make the document straightforward to read
A resume needs to communicate well to both software and people. Use conventional section headings such as “Work Experience,” “Education,” and “Skills,” with a clear, consistent layout. Keep important information in readable text and connect skills to the work or accomplishments that demonstrate them. UT Austin and Indeed both recommend clear formatting and relevant language rather than attempts to manipulate screening software.
- Prefer a simple structure with clearly labeled sections.
- Use the file type and submission method requested in the job posting or application form.
- Check that the uploaded file displays as intended and that its text is selectable and readable.
- Remove hidden text, irrelevant keyword lists, and formatting that makes your experience harder to follow.
The employer’s instructions take priority over generic formatting advice. If an application requests a particular file type or format, follow that direction.
Complete the application accurately
Your resume is only one part of an application. Read each question and eligibility requirement carefully, answer truthfully, and provide the information requested in the format the employer specifies. A polished resume cannot compensate for missing required fields or inaccurate answers. Keep your submitted resume consistent with your application responses.
Use referrals and outreach as additions, not workarounds
If you have a relevant professional contact, ask whether they are comfortable referring you through the employer’s official process. You can also send a concise, professional message to a recruiter when an appropriate contact channel is available. A useful note identifies the role, briefly explains your relevant fit, and asks a focused question or offers your resume for consideration.
These steps may create additional visibility, but the evidence does not establish that they guarantee a review or override an employer’s process. Concordia and the Association for Talent Development present human contact as a way to supplement—not replace—the formal application. Continue to apply through the employer’s system and follow its instructions. Concordia University: ATS and your job search Association for Talent Development: getting a resume seen

Be skeptical of guaranteed shortcuts and rejection percentages
There is no universal ATS shortcut, and no verified figure establishes what share of resumes are rejected before a person sees them across employers. Treat claims such as a fixed percentage of resumes being automatically rejected with caution unless they identify a traceable original source, date, population, and definition. Advice that promises a guaranteed human review goes beyond what the available employer and career-service guidance supports.
If you are unsure whether your resume clearly demonstrates your fit, ask a university career service or a qualified resume reviewer for individual feedback. Their feedback can help improve clarity and relevance; it cannot guarantee an interview or bypass an employer’s hiring process.
