To set up a NETGEAR Orbi WiFi 6 system, connect the Orbi router’s Internet port to your modem with Ethernet, configure the router through the Orbi app or its browser setup page, and add satellites after the router is ready. The steps below apply broadly; check the labels on your devices before following model-specific instructions.
Before you start, identify your Orbi models
Orbi WiFi 6 systems include different router and satellite models, so check the model numbers printed on each unit. For example, NETGEAR’s RBK753 kit pairs one RBR750 router with two RBS750 satellites. The RBR750/RBS750 manual and firmware instructions apply to that family, not automatically to every Orbi WiFi 6 system. See the RBK753 support page for its documentation.
Have your modem, the supplied yellow Ethernet cable, the Orbi router, and the router’s label or QR sticker ready. The sticker provides the default WiFi name and password you will need during setup.

Connect and configure the Orbi router
- Power down existing equipment. If you have an existing router, unplug it and the modem before beginning. Connect one end of the supplied yellow Ethernet cable to the modem and the other to the Orbi router’s Internet/WAN port.
- Start the modem and router. Plug in the modem and Orbi router, but leave the satellites unplugged. Wait for the modem’s lights to stabilize and the Orbi router’s LED to turn solid white. NETGEAR says the router light may take up to five minutes; modem startup time varies.
- Join the Orbi’s default WiFi. On your phone or computer, connect to the network name shown on the Orbi router label or QR sticker, and enter the password printed there.
- Complete setup in the Orbi app. Follow the prompts to identify the router, connect to its WiFi, and set a personal network name and password. Keep the router label available during setup. NETGEAR’s Orbi WiFi system setup instructions describe the app flow.
For the RBR750/RBS750 family, NETGEAR’s manual also documents setup through a web browser and an installation assistant. It estimates installation and basic setup at about 15 minutes; that is an approximate manual estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. Consult the RBR750 documentation for model-specific details.

Place and connect the satellites
Once the router’s initial setup is complete, plug in the satellites. NETGEAR suggests starting three to four rooms away from the router or another satellite, then allowing the router to discover them. This is a placement starting point, not a guarantee of coverage: walls, floors, and the layout of your home can affect the connection. If a satellite does not connect reliably, try a different location.
Add a satellite after initial setup
NETGEAR’s documented example for adding a satellite later is to connect your phone to the Orbi network, open the Orbi app, sign in, open the menu, select ADD SATELLITE, and follow the prompts. Confirm compatibility before adding hardware. The RBS750 is a candidate for an RBR750-based system such as RBK753, but that does not establish compatibility with every Orbi WiFi 6 model. Check the support listing for your exact router and satellite.
If app setup does not work
NETGEAR’s troubleshooting guidance provides a browser-based fallback, so app setup is not the only route.

- Disconnect the Orbi router from the modem.
- Reboot the modem and wait for it to finish starting.
- Reconnect the modem to the Orbi router’s Internet port with Ethernet, then try the Orbi app again.
- If the app still fails, connect a computer or mobile device to the Orbi WiFi using the credentials on the router sticker.
- Open the router’s web setup page and follow the on-screen manual installation flow. The setup instructions and the installation troubleshooting guide cover these paths.
Check firmware using instructions for your exact model
Firmware advice can change, so use NETGEAR’s support page for the precise router and satellite models you own, and read the current release notes before updating. NETGEAR’s March 5, 2026 advisory for Orbi 750, 840, and 850 models describes a manual procedure that updates satellites before the router and requires allowing the update and restart to finish. Follow that sequence only when it matches the instructions for your model. The RBR750 support page lists model-specific resources; a firmware release dated October 17, 2025 lists version 3.2.17.12 for RBR750/RBS750 with security enhancements and fixes, but that historical listing does not establish that version as the latest recommendation.
