A new Samsung refrigerator that is not cooling may still be starting up, may be in Cooling Off (Demo) mode, or may have a setup issue with power, settings, doors, or airflow. Check the display, power, door seals, vents, and actual compartment temperature before assuming the appliance has failed. If those checks do not resolve the problem, contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider.
First, work out whether it needs more time
Two different wait times matter, and they answer different questions. Samsung US advises waiting about two hours after plugging in a new refrigerator before storing food. That is a food-storage instruction, not a guarantee that every model will have reached its final temperature by then. Samsung’s new-refrigerator guidance explains its recommendation.
After changing a setting or cleaning a door seal, temperature may take longer to stabilize. Samsung Saudi Arabia says to allow a few hours after temperature changes and up to 24 hours after seal cleaning or setting adjustments. The exact time depends on the task and model. Samsung’s regional troubleshooting guidance gives those stabilization intervals.

If the appliance was just delivered, follow the instructions for your exact model and the region where it was bought for how long to wait before plugging it in. Transport guidance is not uniform across regions or circumstances. For example, Samsung Colombia’s 2026 instructions apply to products bought in Colombia and distinguish transport orientation; they should not be treated as a universal rule. If you do not know how the refrigerator was transported, check its manual or ask Samsung or the delivery provider before connecting it. Samsung Colombia’s delivery guidance describes its local instructions.

Check for Cooling Off or Demo mode
If the fridge has lights and a responsive display but is not cooling, look for OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF, or temperature bars scrolling across the display. Samsung identifies these as signs that Cooling Off (also called Demo or Shop) mode is active. This retail-display mode disables cooling even though other features may appear to work. A display or floor model is one possible reason a newly acquired refrigerator might be in this mode; do not assume that is the cause without checking the display.
The way to exit the mode varies by model. Samsung says Family Hub models use Fridge Manager settings, while other models have different button sequences. Look up the full model number in the manual rather than trying a button combination intended for a different refrigerator. Samsung’s OF OF and scrolling-bars instructions explain how to identify the mode and find model-specific steps.

Check power, settings, doors, and airflow
- Power and display: Confirm the plug is secure and the outlet works. Look for a displayed error code or warning icon; note it rather than repeatedly unplugging the fridge or trying a factory reset. Samsung advises resetting or unplugging only in specific situations or when troubleshooting calls for it.
- Temperature setting: Check that the refrigerator and freezer settings are appropriate and were not accidentally changed. Use the manual for the control panel on your model.
- Doors and seals: Check that packaging, food, shelves, or drawers are not stopping a door from closing. Wipe a dirty seal with a damp cloth and mild detergent. A cracked or damaged seal may need service.
- Vents and loading: Move food packages away from interior vents and avoid overfilling, so air can circulate through the compartments.
- Placement: Keep the refrigerator away from direct sunlight and heat-producing appliances. Follow the installation guide for the clearances required by your model rather than applying one clearance figure to every Samsung refrigerator.
Samsung’s UK troubleshooting guide covers power, settings, seals, and airflow checks; its recommendations may vary by model and region.
Measure the temperature instead of relying on the display
A thermometer can help determine whether the compartments are actually too warm. For the refrigerator, Samsung US recommends placing a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment. For the freezer, place it between frozen packages rather than in water. Keep the doors closed while the reading settles: Samsung says it can take up to eight hours for a reading to become accurate. After lowering a temperature setting, wait 28 hours before checking again. These timings are Samsung US guidance, not a guarantee for every model or condition. Samsung’s temperature guidance describes the method.

The same Samsung page relays USDA food-storage thresholds of below 40°F for refrigerated food and below 0°F for frozen food. Those are food-safety thresholds reported by Samsung, not a promise that a particular Samsung display setting corresponds to a specific measured temperature.

Contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider if the refrigerator still will not cool after you have confirmed power, checked that Cooling Off mode is disabled, reviewed the settings, cleared vents, and made sure the doors seal—and a thermometer confirms the temperature remains too warm. Provide the full model number, any display code, the installation and plug-in times, and your measured compartment temperature. Do not open sealed refrigeration components or attempt compressor repairs.
Samsung’s UK support page recommends contacting support if troubleshooting does not resolve the cooling problem.
