For most desktop PCs with a free compatible PCIe slot, a PCIe Wi-Fi adapter is a sensible first choice; a USB adapter is easier to install and works when you cannot use an internal slot. The right pick depends on your router, operating system, available ports or slots, and local 6 GHz rules—not just the speed printed on the box.
Choose the form factor that fits your desktop
PCIe: for an available internal slot
A PCIe adapter installs inside the PC and may include an antenna base that you can position away from the back of the case. Tom’s Hardware describes PCIe adapters as generally offering better performance and value, though that is buying guidance rather than a guarantee for every model or computer. Check that your motherboard has a compatible free slot and that you can access it inside the case. Tom’s Hardware’s adapter guide
USB: for simpler installation
A USB adapter avoids opening the case and suits a desktop with no usable PCIe slot. It is also easier to move between computers. Confirm that the adapter’s USB connection and operating-system support suit your PC; a USB connection does not by itself guarantee a particular wireless speed.

Match the adapter to your router and operating system
The adapter can use only the Wi-Fi features supported by both it and the access point. A Wi-Fi 7 adapter connected to an older router will not provide Wi-Fi 7 features. Intel says its Wi-Fi 6E products need a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router to use 6 GHz, while Wi-Fi 7 functionality requires a Wi-Fi 7 router. Requirements for other manufacturers’ products may differ, so verify the specific model’s support and current drivers.

For Intel products, Intel lists Windows 11 with current updates, a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router, and driver 22.70.0 or later as requirements for 6 GHz use. Its listed Wi-Fi 7 requirements are a Wi-Fi 7 router, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and driver 23.10.0 or later. These are Intel’s stated requirements, not universal rules for every adapter. Intel’s Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 requirements
6 GHz availability also depends on location and system configuration. Intel cautions that some countries prohibit 6 GHz use and that a computer manufacturer may disable it. Check local rules and the PC maker’s documentation before buying an adapter for 6 GHz features.

Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and 7: what the labels mean
- Wi-Fi 6: A Wi-Fi generation that does not, by itself, add 6 GHz access.
- Wi-Fi 6E: Wi-Fi 6 extended to the 6 GHz band, where permitted and supported by the router and computer.
- Wi-Fi 7: A newer generation whose features require a compatible Wi-Fi 7 access point, suitable host support, and regional availability. A Wi-Fi 7 label on the adapter alone is not enough.

These are examples with distinct form factors and compatibility conditions, not universal winners. Check current availability, drivers, and the product’s requirements before purchase.
| Model | Form factor and capability | Key fit checks |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Archer TBE550E | PCIe, Wi-Fi 7 | Wi-Fi 7 features require a compatible router and supported PC operating system. Its 320 MHz channel width is on 6 GHz, which may be restricted by region. TP-Link product page |
| TP-Link Archer TBE6500U | USB, Wi-Fi 7 | TP-Link lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support. Feature use depends on a compatible access point and operating system. The listed maximum link rates are 2,882 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz, and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz; these are specifications, not measured internet speeds. TP-Link product page and notes |
| ASUS PCE-BE92BT | PCIe x1, Wi-Fi 7, external antennas, Bluetooth 5.4 | ASUS lists Windows 11 and an Intel 13th-generation-or-later CPU with an Intel motherboard as platform requirements. Its page claims up to 5.7 Gbps for a 6 GHz/320 MHz configuration; that is a conditional manufacturer maximum, not a throughput promise. ASUS product page |
| Intel AX210 | Wi-Fi 6E module; dual-stream 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz | Intel specifies Windows 10, Windows 11, and Linux support. This is a module, not a ready-to-install desktop PCIe card: fit depends on the PC’s M.2 arrangement or a suitable adapter board and antennas. Intel product information |
Do not treat the advertised rate as your internet speed
A maximum link rate is a specification for a wireless connection under suitable conditions; it is not a promise of internet throughput. The result depends on the router or access point, the adapter and its interface, distance and antenna placement, building materials, obstacles, network traffic, and the speed and conditions of the internet connection. TP-Link specifically says its TBE6500U’s actual throughput and coverage are not guaranteed and vary with network, access-point, and environmental factors. TP-Link’s throughput and coverage notes

- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
A Tom’s Hardware comparison updated October 6, 2026, describes testing adapters on a Windows 11 Home desktop with a Wi-Fi 7 router and a separate desktop server connected by 10 GbE. Its iPerf3 tests were run at six and 25 feet across bands, both idle and with six concurrent 4K YouTube streams. Those conditions illustrate why adapter results depend on the test setup; the chart values are not available here as readable figures, so no numeric ranking or head-to-head winner is claimed. Check these details before ordering
- Confirm an open compatible PCIe slot for an internal card, or an available USB port for a USB adapter.
- Check the exact operating-system, driver, CPU, and motherboard requirements on the manufacturer’s page.
- Match the adapter’s Wi-Fi generation and bands to the router or access point you use or plan to buy.
- If you need 6 GHz, verify regional availability and check whether the PC manufacturer enables the band.
- Look for antenna placement options if the PC sits under a desk or close to a wall.
- Confirm whether Bluetooth is included if you need that feature; do not assume every Wi-Fi adapter provides it.
