Usually, you need modem equipment, but not necessarily a separate modem and router. A gateway combines both functions. If you have a modem-only setup and want Wi-Fi, you’ll also need a router. Suddenlink is now part of Optimum, whose current equipment guidance says internet-only customers using their own equipment can use a DOCSIS 3.1 modem; phone service has separate requirements. Because legacy accounts and service bundles may differ, verify compatibility with Optimum before buying.
What modem and router equipment does Suddenlink internet need?
Internet service needs a modem or gateway to connect your home to the provider’s cable network. A router shares that connection among devices, including over Wi-Fi. A gateway combines modem and router functions, so it may cover both needs by itself.
Optimum’s current modem guidance encourages customers to use its provided gateway and says it is included with all Optimum plans. Check your account’s plan details to confirm what equipment is included.
How the equipment fits together
- Modem: Connects your home network to the provider’s cable service.
- Router: Shares the connection with devices, usually through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Gateway: Combines a modem and router in one device.
In a separate-device setup, coaxial cable connects to the modem, and Ethernet connects the modem to the router. Devices can then connect to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Optimum’s router setup guide illustrates this arrangement; follow current provider instructions for activation.

Do you need a separate router for Wi-Fi?
Only if your modem does not include router or Wi-Fi capability and you want wireless access. A modem-only device can connect to a separate router. If you have a gateway with Wi-Fi, an additional router is not ordinarily needed for basic home Wi-Fi, though you may choose another networking setup to address coverage or other needs.
Optimum’s self-install guidance describes modem or gateway setup, while its router guide shows how a separate modem and router connect.

Can you use your own modem with Suddenlink?
Optimum’s published guidance says customers with internet service and no phone service can use a DOCSIS-certified DOCSIS 3.1 modem for all internet speeds. It says DOCSIS 2.0 and DOCSIS 3.0 modems are not allowed. That general rule does not establish compatibility for every legacy Suddenlink account, address, model, or service bundle.

Optimum says customers should call to activate a customer-owned modem. Before purchase, confirm the exact model against your account and address, and ask whether your service includes phone. A general DOCSIS 3.1 specification alone does not confirm that a particular device will work with your account.

What changes if your Suddenlink account includes phone service?
Phone service has separate equipment requirements, so do not assume the internet-only modem rule applies. Optimum’s phone-certified modem guidance lists the Arris TM3402 as DOCSIS 3.1 with two-line voice support for all speeds; the table says it is not wireless. Treat this as an official example, not a universal recommendation, and confirm current suitability with Optimum for your account.

Provider equipment may be the simpler route if you want provider technical support and equipment replacement. Optimum says its provided equipment receives 24/7 technical support and replacement if it malfunctions or needs an upgrade. It says customer-owned modems do not include that support or replacement.

Optimum’s modem page describes equipment rental starting “as low as $15 per month,” but the page does not state a publication year for that figure. It is a provider-stated starting price, not a guaranteed charge for every customer; check your current plan and bill. Compare the recurring equipment charge with the upfront cost of compatible equipment, while accounting for support, replacement, speed compatibility, and any phone requirement.
