For a single percentage discount, calculate original × (1 − percentage / 100), then format the result for display. If the final price looks wrong, check the percentage’s input scale, the formula, where rounding occurs, and the currency formatter—in that order. Without your inputs and code, no one can identify the exact defect, but this sequence narrows it down.
Check whether the percentage is entered as 20 or 0.20
A percentage entered as 20 must be divided by 100 in the calculation. A decimal rate such as 0.20 is already normalized and must not be divided again. Mixing these conventions is a common cause of a result that is far from the expected price.
Pick one convention at the input boundary and normalize it once. For an interface that accepts a number like 20, the single-discount formula is:
const finalPrice = original * (1 - percentage / 100);
Check that both values are numbers before calculating. If they come from form fields, convert them deliberately and validate that they are finite rather than allowing an empty field or invalid text to flow into the calculation.

Verify the formula and discount order
For an original price of 49.99 and a 20% discount, the formula gives 39.992 before any currency rounding. The discount amount is original * percentage / 100; subtracting that amount from the original is equivalent to multiplying by 1 - percentage / 100.
Multiple discounts are usually successive reductions, not percentages to add together. For example, applying 20% off and then 10% off leaves original * 0.80 * 0.90, or 72% of the original—not 70%. Confirm the intended business rule if the calculator supports more than one discount.

Inspect the raw number before formatting
JavaScript Number uses binary floating-point representation. Some decimal fractions cannot be represented precisely, as MDN Web Docs notes in its documentation for toFixed(). That can affect intermediate values and results close to a display-rounding boundary, but it does not prove floating point is the cause of any particular wrong price.

console.log({ original, percentage, discountAmount, finalPrice });
Keep the calculation value numeric. Avoid formatting an intermediate result and parsing the resulting text back into calculation state; formatted text may contain locale-specific separators or currency symbols.
Choose when and how the price should be rounded
There is no universal rounding point for every price calculator. Requirements can differ by currency, jurisdiction, merchant policy, and whether the calculation applies to each item or to a total. Decide explicitly whether to retain precision through intermediate steps, round per item, or round only the final amount. The JavaScript API references explain how to calculate and format values; they do not establish a legal or merchant-specific rounding rule.

Keep rounding policy separate from display formatting. toFixed(2) returns a string with two fractional digits; it formats the represented number and does not make earlier arithmetic exact. MDN documents this behavior on the toFixed() reference page. If the application needs a particular transactional rule, implement and test that rule independently rather than treating toFixed() as the calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFormat the final value as currency
Use Intl.NumberFormat at the display boundary. Supply the intended locale and ISO currency code: locale affects conventions such as decimal separators and grouping, while the currency setting affects currency display and fraction digits. See MDN’s guides to JavaScript internationalization and the Intl.NumberFormat() constructor.

function discountedPrice(original, percentage) {
return original * (1 - percentage / 100);
}
const result = discountedPrice(49.99, 20);
const display = new Intl.NumberFormat("en-US", {
style: "currency",
currency: "USD",
}).format(result);
Here, result remains the numeric calculation result and display is formatted text. The example demonstrates the formula and display API; it does not prescribe a universal rounding policy for stored or transactional prices. If you set explicit fraction-digit or rounding options, check the options documented for the JavaScript runtimes your application supports.
Reproduce the mismatch with a boundary case
Once the input scale and formula are confirmed, test a case whose exact percentage result is near a currency rounding boundary. Compare the raw numeric result with the formatted output and with the result required by your application’s rounding policy. A difference visible only in display points toward formatting or rounding; a larger unexpected difference points you back to inputs, parsing, or formula logic.
To diagnose a specific calculator, capture the original amount, entered discount, expected result, actual result, currency, and the code that parses, calculates, rounds, and formats the price. Without those details, the likely causes can be narrowed down, but the exact bug cannot be determined.
