If Netflix plays on your iPhone but the picture goes black on your projector, stop using AirPlay or Screen Mirroring: Netflix no longer supports those methods. Use a wired video connection that matches your iPhone’s port, or run Netflix on a compatible streaming device connected to the projector. The right fix depends on your iPhone model, Netflix plan, adapter, projector input, and HDCP support.
Why won’t Netflix play on my projector from my iPhone?
The most common cause is that Netflix blocks AirPlay and iPhone Screen Mirroring for playback. Your phone’s menus may appear on the projector, then the video turns black or playback fails when you start a title. Buying a different projector or wireless adapter will not make Netflix mirroring supported. Netflix also identifies unsupported output methods and plan limits as possible causes of error 10065, “The connected display is not supported.”
Netflix’s guidance also identifies error AVF:11870;OS:61001; with AirPlay or Screen Mirroring. If either error appears, stop mirroring first, then check the plan and the connection method you intend to use.

No. Netflix Help Center states, “Airplay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported by Netflix.” This applies to Netflix playback from iPhone and iPad. A projector’s ability to receive an iPhone screen wirelessly does not mean Netflix will allow a title to play through that connection.

Which iPhone adapter works with Netflix on a projector?
For a wired setup, match the adapter to the iPhone’s connector and connect it to a compatible projector input, usually HDMI. Netflix notes that some iPhone models do not support wired video output, so confirm the exact model’s specifications before buying or troubleshooting an adapter.

Apple says a Digital AV or VGA adapter can connect an iOS device to a projector, but protected streaming video may require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. Apple also notes that VGA does not carry audio, so a VGA setup may show a picture without sound. Apple’s adapter guidance was published November 5, 2024; Netflix’s support guidance was accessed October 7, 2026.

Check your Netflix plan if you see error 10065
Netflix says watching on a TV from a mobile device is unavailable with an ad-supported experience or a Mobile plan. Error 10065 can result from plan eligibility as well as an unsupported video output method. Check the plan and its current terms in your Netflix account settings; plan names and conditions can change.
How to troubleshoot a wired iPhone-to-projector connection
- Turn off mirroring. Disconnect AirPlay or Screen Mirroring, then try Netflix through the wired connection instead.
- Confirm the iPhone and adapter. Check whether the phone has Lightning or USB-C, whether it supports wired video output, and whether the adapter is the appropriate type. For Lightning, verify model A1438 or A1621 using Settings > General > About > Apple HDMI Adapter.
- Select the projector’s correct input. Use the projector’s input or source control to choose the HDMI port connected to the adapter. If possible, try another HDMI port.
- Check the protected-video connection. For USB-C or Thunderbolt display connections, Netflix says the cable or adapter must support HDCP 2.2. Apple explains that protected films, shows, and streaming apps can require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. The projector model was not provided here, so its HDCP support cannot be confirmed; check its specifications or contact its manufacturer.
- Reconnect and simplify the cable path. Unplug and reconnect the adapter, reverse the cable ends, and remove extension cables or converters. Apple also recommends checking the cable and ensuring iOS is up to date.
- Test components separately where possible. Try another compatible cable, adapter, display, or projector input to isolate the connection. A failed test does not by itself prove which component is defective.
If you have a picture but no sound, check whether the connection uses VGA: that adapter does not carry audio. You may need a separate audio connection or a digital adapter that carries sound.

Use a streaming device when wired iPhone video is unsuitable
If your plan supports TV playback, Netflix recommends using the app on a Netflix-ready TV or streaming device. A separate device connected to the projector’s HDMI input can run Netflix directly, avoiding iPhone mirroring. Before choosing this route, confirm that the device supports Netflix, the projector accepts its video output, and your plan permits TV viewing.
Do not assume a projector is a supported Netflix casting target just because it offers wireless mirroring. Netflix lists Chromecast (3rd generation or older without a physical remote), Google Nest Hub smart displays, and select cast-enabled Vizio and Compal TVs as compatible cast targets. A projector is not established as compatible merely by appearing as a wireless display.

What to check before replacing equipment
- Identify the iPhone model and whether it has Lightning or USB-C; confirm that it supports wired video output.
- Check the Netflix plan and the exact on-screen error, if any.
- Confirm the adapter and cable suit the iPhone and support protected video where required.
- Check the projector’s selected input, available ports, and HDCP capability.
- Consider direct Netflix playback on a compatible streaming device if the wired phone connection is unsuitable.
